June 5, 2026 - Below is a description of the work planned for June 8 – June 12 in the Texas Department of Transportation’s (TxDOT) Lufkin District, as well as information on some recently completed projects.
Project timelines are subject to change due to material availability and weather conditions.
TxDOT offices will operate with reduced staff on Friday, June 19, in observance of Emancipation Day.
Various locations
Contract sealcoat work is underway in the Lufkin District. Both Farm-to-Market Road (FM) 1970 and FM 699 between U.S. Highway (US) 84 and FM 1656 were completed this week.
Operations are temporarily paused due to weather. Once conditions become favorable again, work will continue in Shelby County. It will continue through counties in the following order: Sabine, San Augustine, Nacogdoches, Angelina, Houston, Trinity, Polk and San Jacinto.
This is a moving operation requiring lane closures.
Lufkin Area Office (Angelina, Houston, and Sabine counties)
Angelina County
- US 59, Redland Project: Contractors will continue dirt and embankment work, and drill shafts at the Mill Creek Bridge. Northbound main lane closures will occur.
- Business (BU) 59/Timberland Drive: Nighttime paving, striping, and preparation for the next phase will occur. There will be lane closures.
- FM 324, bridge replacement and roadway rehabilitation: Concrete girders will be delivered and installed. There will be lane closures for construction vehicles and equipment to enter and exit the jobsite. Expect delays if traveling in the area.
- US 69, cable median barrier: Contractors will be pouring concrete mow strip for the cable barrier on U.S. 69 south of Zavalla. Lane closures will be required. Watch for construction traffic entering and leaving the work zone. The speed limit will be lowered in the work zone limits.
- State Loop (SL) 287, auxilulary and turn lanes: Widening on the eastbound main lanes near Scenic Acres Drive will occur. Scenic Acres Drive at SL 287 will be closed to traffic daily and will be reopened at the end of each day’s work. Resurfacing of the roadway is expected to occur this summer.
- US 69/FM 1475 Huntington traffic signal: The new signal installed at the intersection of US 69 and FM 1475 in Huntington is expected to activate on Tuesday, June 9.
Houston County
SH 7 (Houston and Leon counties) Trinity River bridge and reliefs: Contractors will continue priming the base for paving, laying surface treatment, placing hot mix on driveways, backfilling pavement edges, and seeding. Traffic has been transferred to the new bridge, and no lane closures are expected.
US 287 at Beaver Creek: Work on a temporary earthen wall, the abutment backwall, and wingwalls will occur. Intermittent lane closures are expected while contractors install center line reflectors and patch road base in specific areas in the work zone.
Bridges on County Roads (CR) 4700 and 4050 at Lee Creek and Hart’s Creek tributary: CR 4700 has reopened to traffic, but drivers should expect lane closures as work continues. The contractor will install guard fencing on the bridge.
SL 304 overlay: Paving from SH 21 east to SH 21 west along SL 304, as well as work on curbs and gutters will continue. Traffic will need to follow a pilot car in the area.
FM 2076 rehabilitation and roadway widening: The contractor will be cementing the road surface inside SL 304, which will require lane closures. Drivers will need to follow a pilot car through the work zone. Work on drainage structures under the road outside SL 304 will require lane closures as well.
Livingston Area Office (Polk, San Jacinto, and Trinity counties)
Polk and San Jacinto counties
US 59 Cable Median Barrier: Cable-barrier installation in the median will continue along the entire project area between Corrigan and Shepherd.
Polk County
US 59, Corrigan Relief Route: Workers will: set bridge decks and overhangs, and tie reinforcing steel for the US 287 bridge; prepare to pour deck on the south railroad bridge and set forms for the north railroad bridge; install bridge rail at Bear Creek; perform earthwork and culvert installation at the south tie-in and shoulder work at the north tie-in; mill US 287; tie reinforcing steel for bridge decks and reinforced pavement at various locations.
FM 2610 at Menard Creek: Crews will continue demolition of old guardrails, install new railing, and work on the southern approach slab.
County road bridge projects:
- Big Sandy Creek on Sunflower Road: Establishing vegetation.
- McManus Creek on Kennedy Road: Fence installation and clean up.
- Piney Creek on Carmona Road: Building steel structures for bridge caps.
- Bluff Creek on Darden Road: Fence installation and clean up.
- Piney Creek at Nine Bridges Road: Finish cleaning up and demolishing the old bridge.
San Jacinto County
US 59, Shepherd to Cleveland upgrade to interstate standards: Crews will: continue setting bridge deck panels at Tarkington Bayou and perform retaining wall work; seed ditches to establish vegetation on the southbound frontage road; pour a bridge deck; prep subgrade near Red Road and install wall panels. Lane closures are expected.
SH 156, Stephen Creek bridge replacement: Continue debris clean-up and prepare to demolish the old bridge.
SH 150 sidewalk project: Continue working on sidewalks, driveways, curb ramps, and drainage infrastructure.
Nacogdoches Area Office (Nacogdoches, San Augustine, and Shelby counties)
Nacogdoches County
US 59 intersection improvements at SL 224: Crews will continue demolishing the old pavement.
BU 59, SH/BS 7, SH/BS 21 and FM 2259 striping: Nighttime lane closures are possible to complete striping operations on North Street in Nacogdoches.
SH 7 and CR 724, Moral Bayou bridge project: Prime coating bridge bases will require daily lane closures.
Sabine County
US 96: The contractor will be hauling embankment.
Shelby County
FM 139 at Tenaha Bayou: Contractors will be working on tie-in beams for the bridge.
Notice of Project Completions
FM 1751 - San Augustine County
The contractor widened FM 1751 to 26 feet, improved safety conditions of fixed objects along the road, and applied profile edge-line and centerline markings.
Scenic enhancements - Angelina, Shelby and San Augustine counties
As part of TxDOT’s Green Ribbon Program, the contractor seeded wildflower mixes at US 59 and SL 287 and SH 94 and SL 287 in Angelina County; SL 500 from US 96 to SH 7 in Shelby County; US 96 from SL 500 past FM 1021 and US 96 and SH 147.
Traffic signals - Various locations
The contractor successfully installed signals at 32 locations throughout the Lufkin District.
Reminder to Motorists
Drivers are urged to remain alert in work zones, obey posted traffic controls, and watch for construction crews and equipment. Remember to move over or slow down to 20 mph below the posted speed limit when passing or approaching TxDOT vehicles, law enforcement, tow trucks, utility vehicles, municipal waste trucks, and emergency responders with activated overhead lights on the side of the road.
