August 6, 2026 - Good Morning. It’s Thursday, August 6.
At 8:15 on the morning of August 6, 1945, a B-29 bomber flew over the center of a city called Hiroshima. It dropped a bomb nicknamed “Little Boy”, a weapon that was unique in the history of the world. It carried the power of 15,000 tons of TNT, and when it ignited, 90,000 human beings died in an instant. 50,000 others died in the next few months from radiation poisoning. Three days later a similar bomb was dropped on Nagasaki. Six days after that Japan surrendered. And World War II was over.
81 years later, America remains the only country to use a nuclear weapon. And today, there are over 12,000 nuclear bombs in the world. Most of them belong to Russia and the United States, but seven other countries have them too - England, France, India, Pakistan, North Korea, Israel, and China. Each one of these bombs carries up to 80 times the destructive power of the Hiroshima bomb. We truly posses the power to destroy the world many times over.
Today, Hiroshima is a thriving, modern city of over a million people. It’s modern because almost all of it was destroyed on that long ago August day. But, miraculously, in the center of the city, at ground zero of the bomb site, a single structure survived. It’s still there today, preserved as a ruin. It’s called the Peace Dome, and it stands as an historical monument, as a memorial to the lost, as a prayer for the future.
Warfare in biblical times was, of course, relatively primitive. It was mostly hand to hand combat with swords and shields. But conflict was no less concerning to those generations than it is to us today. These words resonated with them, and they echo still.
“If it is possible, as far as it depends on you, live at peace with everyone.” Romans 12:18
