Invites the Public to Honor America’s POWs and MIAs
September 14, 2026 - On the third Friday of September, a grateful nation pauses to remember those who paid a price few can imagine. National POW/MIA Recognition Day is not a federal holiday, but it is a sacred American observance—a promise kept in every community that still flies the black-and-white flag and still speaks the words that bind us: You are not forgotten.
These were sons and daughters of Texas farms and small towns, husbands and fathers who answered the call and then vanished into captivity or the fog of war. Some came home after years of unthinkable hardship. Others have never returned. Their families have lived for decades in a prison of waiting. On this day we honor them all, and we renew the nation’s solemn duty to account for every missing American.
Shelby County Memorial Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 8904 invites every patriot, every neighbor, and every family to stand with us at a remembrance program on Friday, September 18, 2026, at 9am at the Veterans Memorial on the grounds of the 1885 Historic Courthouse in Center, Texas.
During the ceremony a new POW/MIA flag will be raised—black for the grief of those still absent, white for the purity of their service, and the silhouette of a bowed head that reminds us our work is not finished until every name is known and every warrior is brought home.
Come stand in the East Texas morning. Come honor the courage that never broke. Come show the families that their loved ones still live in the heart of Shelby County and the United States of America.
