October 7, 2026 - Good Morning! It’s Wednesday, October 7.
Have you heard of the Roll Call of the Faith? Found in the 11th chapter of Hebrews, it’s a list of faithful people of the Bible. Theologians aren’t sure who wrote Hebrews. For centuries the consensus pick was the Apostle Paul, but now there are other candidates. Most are colleagues of Paul such as Apollos, Barnabas, and Timothy. And then there are also some votes for Priscilla, the wife of Aquila. This couple were tent makers like Paul and became his fellow missionaries in Ephesus and Corinth. If that theory is correct it would make Hebrews the only book in the Bible written by a woman. An interesting thought.
The Bible is a male dominated book, and so is the Roll Call of the Faith. The list includes great patriarchs like Noah and Abraham. Great leaders like Moses and Joshua. Great warriors like Gideon. Great kings like David. And then there is the name of a woman. She’s first mentioned in Judges. She risked her life protecting the Israelite spies in Jericho, and boldly professed her faith in the One True God. Her name was Rahab. The Bible tells us she was a prostitute. And there she is on a list with the greatest characters in the Word.
We’re reminded this morning that God works through unexpected and unlikely people. He chose the lowly shepherds to be the first to hear the good news of Bethlehem. Jesus spent time with lepers and tax collectors and outcasts. There’s a famous story of Christ protecting a woman who was about to be stoned for adultery. He memorably said “Let the one who is without sin cast the first stone.” But before he spoke those words he knelt down, in view of the hypocritical Pharisees, and wrote something in the sand. The Bible doesn’t tell us what he wrote, but some theologians have an idea. They think he wrote the name... Rahab.
Meet you back here tomorrow,
David
