October 20, 2026 - As temperatures cool and fall settles into East Texas, the Shelby County
Extension Office is encouraging families to lace up their walking shoes and participate in the Family Walk Across Texas® challenge from November 2 through December 14, 2026.
This community wellness program is designed to help families become more physically active while spending quality time together. Participants will track the miles they walk throughout the six-week challenge and compete for prizes.
The family recording the most miles will receive a $50 gift card, while the family with the
second-highest mileage total will receive a $25 gift card.
Families may pick up mileage forms at the Shelby County Extension Office, 266 Nacogdoches
Street, Center, Texas. Participants should submit their mileage forms weekly by email to
feleshia.thompson@ag.tamu.edu.
"Family Walk Across Texas® is a great opportunity for families to enjoy the beautiful fall
weather while improving their health and making memories together," said Feleshia Thompson,
County Extension Agent for Family and Community Health. "A simple walk can have a big
impact on physical and mental well-being."
There is no better time to get outdoors, enjoy the fresh air, and take steps toward a healthier
lifestyle. Families of all ages are encouraged to participate.
