October 27, 2026 - Good Morning! It’s Tuesday, October 27.
On this day, in 1907, the very first subway opened in New York City. It took passengers from Lower Manhattan all the way up to Harlem, a distance of nine miles, and it only cost a nickel. On that first day, 150,000 riders paid that nickel and took that ride. The New York Subway has been open 24/7 pretty much ever since. But today there are 665 miles of track, making it the largest transit system in the world. I’ve ridden a couple of dozen times. I got where I wanted to go, but the experience always made me a little nervous. My youngest daughter, who lived in New York for a dozen years, knew the subway like the back of her hand.
Just imagine if all those millions of people who travel each day on the subway, suddenly had to start traveling above ground. New York City, as we know it, would grind to a halt. Its streets (no pun intended) would become train wrecks. But the subway does run, usually on time, and it’s actually pretty safe. And so The Big Apple marches on.
Think for a moment about the things in your life that you take for granted, but that, without them, your life would change drastically for the worse. Maybe your list would include your smart phone or Facebook or Netflix. But take another moment and go deeper. What really makes a difference in your life? Friends? Family? Church? We could, I dare say, manage to live without all the electronic distractions. But could we live without the personal interactions? We had a taste of that during the Covid shutdown, and it wasn’t pretty.
So, let’s all take a moment to evaluate our lives this morning - on this day that the Lord has made. A moment to prioritize. A moment to remember. A moment to cherish the truly essential things that we could not live without.
Meet you back here tomorrow,
David
