Ruby Warr Smith, 83, of Sardis, died in Center on May 31 after a lengthy illness. The family will receive friends from 10 a.m. until 12 p.m. Saturday, June 3, at Mangum Funeral Home; funeral services will begin at noon. Burial will follow in Old Salem Cemetery, her family’s burial ground. Her cousin Bro. Bobby Warr will officiate, and her grandson Rodger Glen McLane will read the obituary.
Ruby Essie Warr was born in the Aiken Community of Shelby County on April 29, 1934, the fifth of twelve children born to Ernest Green Warr and Lid Luman. Her siblings were Noah Velt, Florine ‘Crickett’, Homer, E.C., Bobby, L.C, Freddie, Billy, Shirley, Betty, and Mary Warr. Ruby spent much of her youth in West Texas, where her family moved to work during the Great Depression. With her own family, Ruby moved her children back to Shelby County where she made her lifelong home. A well-known citizen of Shelby County, Ruby owned her own restaurant in Tenaha in the late ‘50s and worked for years as a waitress in local diners. Ruby married Ray Smith and lived on their farm in Sardis before her health declined and she became a resident of Holiday Nursing Home. Ruby was raised in the Baptist Faith, but at the time of her death she was a member of the Sardis Pentecostal Church. Ruby’s family will remember her as a loving and elegant lady. Ruby is preceded in death by her parents, brothers—Velt, Homer, E.C., Bobby, L.C., Freddie, and Billy, and sisters—Crickett Vandergriff and Shirley Nethery.
Local survivors include her husband, Ray Smith, of Sardis; her son and his family, Rodger Dale and Brenda McLane, of Deadwood; her grandchildren, Brandi and Shane Kelley, of Carthage, Lacie Fensom, of Deadwood, and Rodger Glen McLane, of Jackson, Miss.; her great-grandchildren, Alyssa, Brenton, and Courtlyn Fensom, all of Deadwood. Also surviving Ruby is her daughter, Patti Miller, of Reno, Nev., and her family. Other survivors include her sisters, Mary Scates and her husband Bubba, of Center, and Betty Prior and her husband Travis, of Longview. Ruby is also survived by many nieces, nephews, and countless cousins throughout Shelby County, whom she loved dearly.
