Center Lions Ballpark, Saturday, July 6, 2019 -
Dozens of Dixie League baseball teams from Texas are competing in Center this weekend during state playoff elimination action at Center’s Lions Club Ballpark. Teams include: Center, Panola County, EMC, Onalaska, Kilgore, Willis, Bullard, Liberty, Central, Fairfield, Trinity, Overton, Tri-Cities, Anahuac, Livingston, Splendora, Huntington, Cleveland, and Bullard.
Two teams from Center played late on Saturday. Center faced Panola in the 2019 Ozone South Regional State Tournament but fell 10-1. Center’s 2019 AAA South team faced Kilgore in the Region I State Tournament. They trailed until the final out but tied things up and won after exploding in a seventh inning rally which gave them a 19-8 win.
Action continues in Center on Sunday until the winners of the three tournaments are determined.

Center is now in the third day of baseball tournament games being held by the Dixie League Organization. Although conditions have been wet, Center Dixie League is hosting the state elimination games for T-Ball and Coach-Pitch Division I and Division II teams. Teams included in the tournament action are Center, Shelbyville, Tatum, Henderson, Arp, Nacogdoches, Henderson, EMC, Kilgore, Tarkington, Twin County, Cleveland, Hudson, Dayton, Livingston, Cold Springs, Malakoff, Fairfield, Anahuac, Central, West Rusk, Shepard and Chapel Hill. Tournament activities started on Friday and will continue on till Monday July 1, 2019.
The field of teams have been narrowing as teams get eliminated. The intensity is increasing as the stakes are getting bigger and teams work towards the trophy rounds of competition.

Tenaha High School, Tuesday, June 18, 2019 –
On Tuesday local teams were spotted participating in summer league basketball games at Tenaha’s Special Events Center. Early action saw Shelbyville led Nacogdoches 32-31 midway through an early game but fall 56-52.
Timpson got behind 8-0 to Woden early in the next game but fought back to tie things up in the second half. Woden eventually won the contest 49-44.
Representatives from Shelbyville, Tenaha, Joaquin, Timpson, Carthage, Mount Enterprise, Gary, Nacogdoches, Henderson, and Beckville are participating in the league this summer which convenes on Tuesday and Thursday.
Tenaha High School, Thursday, June 13, 2019 –
Tenaha High School’s Special Events Center was the site which launched summer league play for several local varsity and junior varsity teams. Representatives from Tenaha, Joaquin, Timpson, Carthage, Mount Enterprise, Gary, Nacogdoches and Beckville sharpened their skills while competing in offseason basketball games.
Early action saw local schools Joaquin and Gary face off with Gary winning by a lopsided 56-17 margin. Tenaha and Carthage next faced off in a closer game where Tenaha trailed 27-29 at halftime but they bounced back for a 59-50 win by game’s end.
June 6, 2019 Denver - Abi DePriest, from Tenaha and an 8th grade student at Carthage Jr. High school has earned a position on the Texas National Junior High rodeo team and will be traveling with fellow teammates to Huron, South Dakota, June 23rd through June 29th to compete at the 15th annual National Junior High Finals Rodeo (NJHFR) in the Pole Bending competition.
Featuring roughly 1,000 contestants from 44 states, five Canadian provinces, Australia and Mexico, the NJHFR is the world's largest junior high rodeo. In addition to competing for more than $80,000 in prizes, NJHFR contestants will also be vying for more than $200,000 in college scholarships and the chance to be named a National Junior High Finals Rodeo World Champion. To earn this title, contestants must finish in the top 20 — based on their combined times/scores in the first two rounds — to advance to Saturday evening's final round. World champions will then be determined based on their three-round combined times/scores. New this year is a $50,000 added money, optional jackpot, available to everyone at finals who cares to enter.
Again, this year, the Saturday championship performance will be televised nationally as a part of the Cinch High School Rodeo Tour telecast series on RFD-TV. Live broadcasts of all NJHFR performances will air on: www.RidePass.com. Performance times are 7 p.m. on June 23rd and 9 a.m. and 7 p.m. each day thereafter.

Center Middle School Gymnasium, Wednesday, June 5, 2019 –
Center’s Middle School Gymnasium was the site for a 3-day basketball camp. Numerous first through 8th graders participated and were coached on fundamentals, competitiveness, teamwork and coachability.
During Wednesday’s final day of the camp the campers received their coveted Roughrider Camp T-shirt.
Some of the drills taught at the camp included Agility, ball handling, passing and layups. They also competed in games and each day had standout campers named.
June 3, 2019 - (Album) - Shelby County youth participated in the 28th Annual Preston Football Camp on June 1, 2019 where they practiced in a variety of exercises and football training methods.
Dwight Preston and his team of coaches spent the day instructing these area players on football strategies and fundamentals.
An extra highlight this year for the players was being timed in the 40-yard dash on the Roughrider track.
June 3, 2019 - Saturday, June 15th will mark the 27th year of the Darren Wilson Golf Classic that raises scholarship money for Shelby County seniors.
Darren lost his life in a tragic accident while trying to help someone. It only seemed fitting that we would honor his memory by helping others and thus the start of the Darren Wilson Scholarship Fund.
He was a member of the local Ducks Unlimited committee and in 1993 friends and members of the local DU committee started the golf tournament that bears his name.
The format of the "fun" tournament at the Center Country CLub is a 6-person team scramble. Entry fee is $100 per player with registration starting at 11am. Lunch at 11:30 by the Shelby County Cookers and tee off around 12:30pm. There will be a silent auction of donated items, but we can always make a place for another if you would like to give an item for this. Hole sponsors are available for $200 as well.

June 2, 2019 - East Texas’s own Dominique Edison will be hosting a youth football camp at the San Augustine High School Stadium on June 15th. Dominique played at SFA State University where he was named NCAA All-American and he then played in the National Football League as wide receiver for the Tennessee Titans.
Edison has enlisted the help of former NFL players, college coaches and current college football players to assist him in putting on this camp. Former NFL player and East Texan Vincent Cartwright will also be at the camp sharing his knowledge of the game.
During the camp, Edison and his coaching staff will thoroughly train and prepare each player to be a better, more confident football player. With excellent football, housing facilities, top coaches, and pro players, Dominique’s goal is to give each camper the finest football instruction available along with an experience they will never forget.
The camp agenda will offer fun, challenging, vigorous game like training and is accepting of everyone’s abilities. The camp coaches take great pride in providing a loving, safe, and welcoming environment for all the campers.
The summer football camp is available for youth ages 7 to 18. The Summer Football Camp will be held on Saturday, June 15th, at San Augustine Wolf Pack Stadium. It is highly encouraged all youth interested in attending the camp pre-register online at edisonfootballcamp.com. Camp spots are limited and guaranteed to fill quickly so register online now. If spots are still available, youth will be allowed to register in person on the day of the camp, beginning at 7:30 a.m.
There will be a $15 fee to participate in the camp, which will include a Dri-Fit camp shirt and food. The camp will conclude at 1:00 p.m.
Athletes attending the camp need to bring cleats and a sports water bottle with them. Camp is non-contact with a focus on drills and activities that are beneficial for football players. Each athlete will work with top experienced sport coaches with a focus on improving footwork, speed and agility, increased balance and control, and building confidence through fundamental development.
Parents and relatives are encouraged to attend the camp practice and concluding ceremony.
