Center Middle School Gymnasium, June 08, 2017 –
The 2017 Roughrider Summer Basketball Camp was held in the Center Middle School Gymnasium for boys entering grades fourth through eighth. Each camp participant received a T-shirt and learned the value of conditioning drills, basketball fundamentals, competitiveness, and teamwork. Coaches, including Head Basketball Coach Hiram Harrison, instructed over forty players at the camp which lasted three days.
May 31, 2017 - Tenaha student Pacey Rhodes, son of Heather and Robbie Rhodes, competed in the Texas State Junior High Finals this past week in chute dogging. Pacey finished 2nd in average time and 3rd place in points.
His outstanding performances earned him the chance to compete in the National Finals in Lebanon, Tennessee the week of June 18-24.
May 25, 2017 - Rams, Roughriders, and Dragons will be represented as the nations elite 10u baseball players gather in Disney World.

Shelby county will be represented well in the Demarini Elite 32 World Series event located in Orlando, Florida Disney World. The event invites the top 32 teams in the United States to compete for the title of National Champion. These four players have committed their time and efforts since 4 years of age to achieve this dream.
Their love for the game and motivation to succeed is the driving force behind their efforts. The future is bright for Shelby County Baseball and their parents would like to thank the community for the support they have each received.
May 22, 2017 - Center's own Grant Belrose, owner of 936 CrossFit, traveled to San Antonio over the weekend to compete in the 2017 South Regional (Latin America, South West US, South Central US) CrossFit Games in San Antonio, Texas as part of the Reebok CrossFit Games.
After competing in the CrossFit Open (Area level) in February, Grant was invited to compete in the regional along with 47 more athletes from the southern United States and Latin America. The Open is the first stage of the CrossFit Games which includes hundreds of thousands of athletes competing in the worldwide, online competition.
Grant not only displayed strength and skill but also mental fortitude completing 6 workouts in 3 days.

Event 1 - 42nd place (For time, wearing a 20-lb weight vest: 1,200-m run; Then, 12 rounds of: 4 strict handstand push-ups, 8 chest-to-bar pull-ups, 12 squats)
Event 2 - 13th place (21-15-9 reps for time of: 80-lb Dumbbell snatches and Ring dips)
Saturday
Event 3 - 19th place (For time: 100-ft (80-lb) dumbbell overhead walking lunge; 100 double-unders; 50 (30-lb) wall-ball shots; 15-ft. rope climb, 10 ascents; 50 wall-ball shots; 100 double-unders; 100-ft. dumbbell overhead walking lunge)
Event 4 - 36th place (For time: 60-ft. handstand walk; 10 toes-to-bars; 10 (150-lb) double kettlebell deadlifts; 60-ft. handstand walk; 12 toes-to-bars; 12 double kettlebell deadlifts; 60-ft. handstand walk; 14 toes-to-bars; 14 double kettlebell deadlifts; 60-ft. handstand walk; 16 toes-to-bars; 16 double kettlebell deadlifts)
Sunday
Event 5 - 12th place (21-15-9 reps (80-lb. dumbbell) for time of: Muscle-ups and Single-arm overhead squats)
Event 6 - 12th place (For time: 30 / 25 cal. bike; 20 burpee (30-in) box jump-overs; 10 (150-lb) sandbag cleans)
Finishing out his final points standing in 19th place overall.
When asked what his goals for next season are he replied "next year, top 10".

Saturday, May 20, 2017. Shreveport Convention Center –
Nicholas Samford, of Tenaha, won the Novice Classic Physique Division of the International Federation of Body Builder’s (IFBB) Competition held at the Shreveport Convention Center last Saturday.
Samford has been weight lifting for two and a half years and decided 20 weeks ago, as a New Year’s resolution to compete in the National Qualifier event which is sponsored by the Shreveport-Bossier Sports Commission, Louisiana Governor’s Games, Caddo Parrish and IFBB Federation League.
The competition had around 110 total competitors competing in men’s and women’s competitions ranging from men’s and women’s: body building, physic, and women’s bikini categories. Most categories had divisions ranging from professional to amateur.
Samford stated, “I’m very pleased to have some success at my first event. This is hard work and to win this event was so exciting.” Samford plans to possibly compete again in August at the Sherman Classic in Galveston.
Samford is trained by longtime IFBB competitor, and coach, Bobby Smith from Center. He is also the son of Ronny and Rhonda Samford of Tenaha. He graduated from Tenaha High School in 2007 and currently works at the Eastman Chemical Plant in Longview.
May 15, 2017 - Joaquin Lady Rams will play Cross Roads in the Regional Semi-finals Playoff Game at Letourneau University on Friday, May 19th at 6pm.

May 2, 2017 - The Tenaha Tiger Boys will be competing Saturday, May 13 in the 2017 Track and Field State Meet at Mike A. Myers Stadium University of Texas at Austin in the 800m Relay race.
The 800m Relay team members who qualified for State with a seed time of 1:30.62 are Onterio Thompson, Altus Horn, Jachristopher Gardner, Jaquavion Lloyd, and Kale Page. (State Qualifiers)

Gates will open an hour before the first event each day. Ticket sales are cash or check only. Please make checks payable to the University of Texas. ATMs are avaialble on site and outside of Gate 4 of Mike A. Myers Stadium.

Stadium Rules
All bags carried by contestants or spectators must be checked before entering Myers Stadium. Gates 3 and 4 will be designated for bag check of participating schools. Personal coolers are not allowed. Exception: Participant coolers accompanied by an athletic trainer (one per team) from the school may contain water and/or sport drinks only. For your safety and the safety of others, the following items are NOT allowed into the stadium:

Awards Stand and Media Tent
Field Events and Running Event competitors will receive awards immediately following their event. The top three finishers will be escorted to the awards stand and media tent after the event is completed. Delays in your arrival will detract from the awards ceremony. A medal order form for the purchase of extra medals is included in the school packet.

May 1, 2017 - Joaquin Lady Rams vs. West Sabine Lady Tigers are competing in a best of three Series starting with game one on Friday, May 5th, 6:00 pm at West Sabine High School. Game two is Saturday, May 6th, 2:00 pm at Joaquin High School. Game three, if necessary, will be held thirty minutes following the end of game two. There is no charge for admission.
Friday, April 28, 2017, Nacogdoches Dragons Ballpark -
The Joaquin Lady Rams varsity softball team limited the Latexo Lady Tigers to a single base hit, on Friday, when they took a 7-0, Game 1, bi-district win. The Lady Rams only allowed three total base runners during the contest, two runners reached due to errors in the first and seventh innings. Lady Rams’ pitcher, Lexi Hutchins struck out six batters during the one-hit playoff win.
The Lady Rams hit safely eight times during the contest and walked four times.
Lilly Welch reached base first for Joaquin when she raced to second base after an error by Latexos’ shortstop in the bottom of the first inning. She later scored on a Lexi Hutchins sacrifice fly to right field.
Lanie Stanley doubled in the third inning and Hutchins later scored her with a triple over Latexos’ rightfielder’s head. Darby Hughes scored Hutchins later in the inning when she hit safely to right field to give JHS a 3-0 advantage.
Hits by Ali Harper, Stanley, Hutchins, and Hughes helped the Lady Rams extend their lead, by four more runs, during the bottom of the sixth frame.
Lady Rams Head Coach, and Girl's Athletic Director, Stephen McCann said, “We were pleased with our team’s performance today but feel we can play better. The girls were slightly rusty today because we haven’t played a game for one and a half weeks. Lexi Hutchins pitched well today. We feel she’ll be fine and still has a lot to give. Over all we are pleased to get the win today.”
Updated: Joaquin and Latexo faced off for Game 2 on Saturday. The Lady Rams took an early 3-0 lead and extended it to 6-0 by the second inning, and 7-0 going into the fourth frame. Latexo scored two runs in the final inng but JHS held on for a 8-2 win which clinched the bi-district playoff series.
The Lady Rams will advance to the UIL Area round of the playoffs and will next play Game 1 at West Sabine on Friday, May 5, at 6 p.m.
