December 31, 2016 Tenaha Special Events Center - Friday’s Eighth Annual Tenaha Holiday Hoops Basketball Tournament final round action saw five Shelby County teams still competing, four local teams fought it out for a chance at tournament trophies.

The Shelbyville Dragons Varsity Basketball team came away with a 65-55 win over the White Oak Roughnecks. This win gave SHS the tournament’s Consolation Bracket B Trophy.

The game was very close until the late stages of the fourth stanza. The Roughnecks had an 11-9 advantage with just two minutes left in the first frame, but a bucket by Dragon Cole Ferguson tied the game with 1:31 remaining. A 3-pointer by Dragon Jordan Boykins, with just 29 seconds left in the opening period, helped Shelbyville take a narrow 14-13 lead into the second quarter of play.

Two 3-pointers by Boykins in the second period helped Shelbyville stay close to White Oak but the Roughnecks held a narrow 35-34 lead at the midway break.

The Dragons lost a little ground to the Roughnecks in the third frame when WOHS outscored the Dragons 13-12 and took a 48-46 in to the fourth and final period of play.

The Dragons got 8 points from Boykins and 5 points from teammate Jakovian Buckley in the final frame to help themselves outpace White Oak 19-7 in the final period.

Trez Barnes and Jordan Boykins led the Dragons with 17 points each, Cole Ferguson had 14, Trae Polley 9, Corey Bearden 2, and Ryan Bailey had one point. White Oaks’ Cameron Bates and Andrew Hood each had 17 points.

The Joaquin Girls Varsity Lady Rams team fell in a narrow 44-43 loss to the Centerville Lady Tigers Friday in the Holiday Hoops fifth round title game. The Lady Ram held a 14-11 lead at the end of the first period after getting six points early from junior post Desere Cooper and four from senior post Hana Bonner.

Day’za Lane scored nine points for the Lady Rams in the second period which helped JHS outpace the Lady Tigers 12-9 on the way to a 26-20 halftime lead.

Centerville chipped away at the Joaquin lead and they led 34-32 with 1 minute left in the third frame. Lane tied the game at 34-34 with 41 seconds left but Lady Tiger Sara Stutzman hit a 3-point bomb for the last score of the period, which sent the game into the fourth period with CHS ahead 37-34.

Joaquin gained the lead with less than 1:30 left in the contest but a 2-point bucket with less than one minute left to play, by Tori Tollett, gave Centerville the final one-point advantage.

The Lady Rams were led offensively by Hana Bonner with 15 points, Day’za Lane had 13, Desere Cooper pitched in 8, Erica Davis 8, and Katelyn Jackson had 3 points.

Both Tenaha boys and girls teams reached the championship finals round of tournament play for the first time in tournament history. The Lady Tigers fell to the Martin’s Mill Lady Mustangs in a narrow 32-30 championship loss. Tenaha held a 9-6 lead at the end of the first period. Martin’s Mill fought back to gain a 14-13 advantage when the teams went into the locker room at the midway intermission.

Tenaha took a 20-17 lead with 3.29 left in the third stanza but the Lady Mustangs went back up 21-20 with a score on a fast-break for the final score of the frame.

Arlicia Roland put THS up to start the fourth stanza but MMHS made the next three scores and began to stall while leading 32-28 with just seconds remaining in the contest. The Lady Tigers were forced to foul. Arlicia Roland scored with just 6 seconds left in the contest but the Lady Mustangs were able to hold on for the narrow

2-point victory and hoist the championship trophy.

Only four players scored for THS, they were led by Arlicia Roland with 10 points, Shayla Parks 8, Bianca Davison 8, and Brooke McClure had four points.

The #6 Class 2A Tenaha Tigers’ Varsity Boys team faced off with the #1 ranked Class 1 A Lipan Indians in the championship round of the Hoops Tournament later on Friday. The Indians came out hot and jumped out to a 12-2 lead by the 2:30 minute mark of the first period. Tenaha went on an 8-2 run at the end of the frame and only trailed 10-14 going into the second period.

Trai Gardner hit a bucket to begin the second quarter but the Indians exploded during the frame and outscored THS 24-12 during the period. Lipan took a 38-22 advantage into the midway intermission.

Tenaha outscored Lipan 13-14 in the third quarter but still needed to gain more ground as they headed to the fourth stanza behind by a 36-51 margin.

The Indians once again outscored Tenaha, this time 27-19 during the final period, and they won the championship game by a 78-55 margin.

The Tigers were led by Trai Gardner who had 25 points and only trailed Lipan’s Tate Phillips who had 26 points. Other Tigers scoring were JaQualin Franks with 17, Jay Lloyd 6, Ladarrius Garret and Cody Foshee each had two points each.

The Joaquin Rams boys’ varsity team fought it out in a Consolation Bracket B round-robin match game with the Garrison Bulldogs. The Rams ultimately fell to GHS by a 70-59 margin after falling behind early and trailing throughout the remainder of the contest.

Four points each from Bulldogs Dayton Bell and RJ Johnson helped Garrison gain an 11-6 lead by the end of the first quarter of play. Three 3-pointers by Ram Eleazar Huerta helped Joaquin gain ground at times but GHS eventually outpaced the Rams 21-17 in the second frame. Garrison led 32-23 at the midway break.

Bulldog Justin Garcia exploded for ten points in the third frame which helped the Bulldogs gain a 53-41 advantage going into the final period of play.

Ram Tray Wilkerson hit three 3-pointers in the final period but Joaquin wasn’t able to gain enough ground as they outscored GHS but only 18-17 in the last quarter.

Each Huerta and Wilkerson led JHS with 16 points each, Nick Matthews 10, Justin Hooper 8, and Peyton Martinez had seven points.

December 29, 2016 Tenaha Holiday Hoops - On Wednesday, Nineteen Boys, and 20 Girls varsity basketball teams, kicked off the Eighth Annual Tenaha Holiday Hoops Basketball Tournament. The tourney lasts three days and is played in five gymnasiums on Tenaha, Gary, Joaquin, and Carthage high school campuses.

The Joaquin Rams started their first round action by facing the Alto Yellow Jackets at Joaquin Rams Gymnasium. Alto gained an early 4-0 lead and led 7-2 with five minutes left in the first stanza. A 3-pointer by Justin Hooper and five first-quarter points by Nick Matthews helped JHS keep things close and Alto led 16-12 going into the second period.

Three pointers by Peyton Martinez, Eleazar Huerta, and Tray Wilkerson helped Joaquin pull to within 27-28 of the Yellow Jackets by the midway break.

A JaQuenton Moore slam and 3-pointers by each, Javonettie Mumphrey and Chris Jackson helped Alto extend their lead to 50-37 by the end of the third frame.

Joaquin used two 3-pointers by each Wilkerson and Huerta to out-pace the Yellow Jackets 24-20 in the final period but AHS was able to hold on for the 70-61 first-round win.

Eleazar Huerta led the Rams with 18 points, Nick Matthews added 16, Justin Hooper 11, Tray Wilkerson 9, Peyton Martinez 5, and Deonte Burns had 2 points.

Alto was led by Jayren Whitaker and Fred Thacker who each had 15 points apiece.

The Rams moved to the Consolation Bracket to play at 7 p.m. in Wednesday’s second round action at Tenaha’s Tiger Gymnasium.

The Timpson Lady Bears faced the Kountze Lady Lions at Joaquin Rams Gymnasium, early Wednesday, during first round Holiday Hoops tournament competition. An early 3-pointer by Jasmine Rodgers, and two 3-pointers by Brylee Behrens, in the first period, helped Timpson take a 9-2 lead by the 5:15 mark of the first stanza. Later in the period, McKenzie Burgay scored on a layup and Behrens sank a hook shot which helped THS take a 19-5 lead into the second period.

The Lady Lions offense was able to outscore the Lady Bears 12-9 in the second period and the two teams went into the midway intermission with Timpson leading 28-17.

Kountze outscored the Lady Bears 11-6 in the third stanza, and scored 11 unanswered points to pull within 34-31 early in the fourth quarter of play. The Lady Bears were able to use five points from Sara Duke and six points from Jasmine Rodgers to extend their lead to 48-39 by the game’s end.

Jasmine Rodgers led Timpson scorers with 22 points, Brylee Behrens added 14, and Ashton Harris pitched in nine points.

Mikayla Linn led the Lions with 10 points.

This game sent Timpson into second round action verses Martins Mill High School later Wednesday afternoon.

The Joaquin Lady Rams took a 40-30 first-round Holiday Hoops win over Lipan High School Wednesday at Joaquin Rams gymnasium. The Lady Rams trailed the Lady Indians early but Erica Davis hit a jumper, Dayza Lane hit a free throw and Desere Cooper hit a turn-around jumper to pull JHS to within 7-9 by the end of the first period.

Eboni Adams and Katelyn Jackson hit 3-point bombs to help Joaquin carry a 20-14 lead into the locker room at the midway break.

The Lady Rams scored 20 more points in the second half while slowing the Lady Indians to only 16 points during the third and fourth periods combined.

Joaquin moved on to face the winner of Wednesday’s Timpson versus Martin’s Mill game, on Thursday, at Tenaha’s SEC at 8:30 p.m.

The Shelbyville Dragons Boys Varsity team fell behind early to the Laneville Yellow Jackets at Tenaha Tigers Gymnasium. Laneville led 35-30 with two minutes left in the third period. Three Laneville three points and three ‘Jacket steals, helped LHS extend their lead over the Dragons to 43-32 by the start of the fourth period.

Cole Ferguson started the final period with a 3-point bomb which brought SHS to within 43-35 of the ‘Jackets. Ferguson went on to score 16, of his Shelbyville-game-high 18 points, during the fourth quarter by Laneville was able to hold on for a 63-53 first round tournament win.

Trez Barnes added twelve points onto the Dragon’s tally and teammate Jordan Boykins chipped in ten. Christian Brantley led the Yellow Jackets with 20 points.

The Dragons will next play at 1 p.m. Wednesday at Tenaha’s Tiger Gymnasium. They will face a team yet to be determined at press time.

The Tenaha Tigers took a convincing 88-47 first-round Holiday Hoops win over the Martinsville Pirates at Tenaha’s Special Events Center last Wednesday. The Tigers will next face the winner of the Sabine/ Elysian Fields game at 8:30 p.m. on Wednesday night.

The Tigers used 2 3-pointers by Juarmez Brock, and 10 points by JaQualin Franks during the first period to jump out to a 28-5 lead going into the second period. By the halftime intermission the Tigers had gained a 51-23 advantage.

The Tigers outscored the Pirates 20-13 in the third period and easily coasted to the 41 point win during the fourth period.

Franks led the team with 21 points while TK Gardner had 14 points and Brock chipped in 12 points.

Tenaha’s Lady Tigers had the biggest win of the day with a lopsided 92-26 first-round win over the Harleton Lady Wildcats at Tenaha’s SEC.

Bianca Davison led the Lady Tigers with 14 first-quarter points and 18 points on the night. The Lady Tigers led 37-8 at the conclusion of the first period of play. They took a comfortable 57-13 lead in to the locker room at the midway break.

Tenaha outscored Martinsville 20-7 in the third period and took a lopsided 77-20 lead into the final frame. The Lady Tigers outpaced the Lady Pirates 15-6 in the final stanza to gain the win.

Arlicia Roland had 18 points, Shayla Parks and Brooke McClure each had 14 points for the Lady Tigers, Calicia Roland added 10 points to the Lady Tiger’s tally. The Lady Tigers play a yet to be determined team at 11:30 a.m. on Thursday at Tenaha’s SEC.

December 22, 2016 - Tenaha Special Events Center, Tuesday December 20, 2016

The Tenaha Tigers Varsity Basketball Team moved their season record to 6-0, and their District 22 2A mark to 1-0 with a 76-62 win over the Chireno Owls. The game was close in the early going, and the score was knotted at 14-14 at the conclusion of the first period of play.

The Tigers trailed by a single point at the midway break with Chireno heading into the locker room with a narrow 25-24 lead.

Thirteen, third-quarter, points by Tiger Hayden Jenkins helped Tenaha take an 11-point lead. The two teams went into the final quarter with THS leading 46-35.

Owl Hank Burks scored 11 of his team-high 19 points in the final stanza to help Chireno score 27 points in the final period but Tenaha got 9 points from Trai Gardner, and 6 from JaQualin Franks, which helped the Tigers team out-pace the Owls 28-27 points in the final stanza.

Franks led the Tigers with 22 points, Jenkins added 16. Gardner and Jay Lloyd added 11 points each, Jaurmez Brock had 4, LaDarrius Garrett 2, and Josh Walters scored a point.

In Junior Varsity action between Tenaha and Chireno, earlier on Tuesday, the Tigers were able to take a narrow 38-37 win in a hard fought contest.

The Tigers Varsity team will start Holiday Hoops action at Tenahas’ Special Events Center on Wednesday, December 28, at 1 p.m. They will play the winner of an earlier contest between Carlisle and Martinsville High Schools.

The Tenaha girls’ varsity team will play at the SEC later in the day, at 2:30 p.m., against either Gary or Harleton High Schools.

December 19, 2016 Shelbyville Dragons Gymnasium - The Shelbyville Lady Dragons improved their 2016-17 season record to 1-5 with a 57-31 home-court win over the San Augustine Lady Wolves on Friday night.

Leading scorer for the Lady Dragons was Bailey Rabalais who had 21 points on the night and scored nine points in the third quarter alone.

Shelbyville never trailed and led 16-8 at the end of the first period of play. The Lady Dragons defense was able to hold the Lady Wolves to just three points in the second stanza. This allowed Shelbyville to take a 29-11 lead into the locker room at the midway break.

Shelbyville was able to get seven steals in the third period and this helped them outpace San Augustine and take a 42-21 advantage in to the final period of play.

SHS scored 15 points in the final stanza while they held the Lady Wolves to ten points using aggressive defense and slowing their own offensive pace at times.

The Lady Dragons will next play Hull-Daisetta at 8 p.m., at a neutral site, which is not yet named on either school’s website or Maxpreps.

December 17, 2016 Shelbyville Dragons Gymnasium – The Shelbyville Dragons Varsity Basketball Team boosted their 2016-17 record to 10-2 with a convincing 59-38 win over the West Sabine Tigers (4-8) last Friday. The Junior Varsity boys won by a similar score of 59-39.

During varsity play, early 3-pointers by Dragons Ryan Bailey and Corey Bearden, and a tip-in by Jacovian Buckley, helped SHS go up 15-6 by the conclusion of the first period.

Jordan Boykins hit a 3-pointer to start the second stanza and gave Shelbyville 18-6 lead with 7:44 remaining before halftime. SHS ultimately outscored the Tigers 11-10 in the second period and took a 26-16 lead into the locker room at the midway break.

Boykins hit a 3-pointer to put Shelbyville up 29-16 at the beginning of the second half but Tiger Blake Ponder countered with a 3-pointer of his own, just moments later, to pull WSHS to within 19-29 with 7:11 left in the third period. Three buckets by Bearden later in the third stanza helped Shelbyville gain a 42-26 lead going into the final quarter of play.

Twelve points by Boykins in the final period helped the Dragons pull away to the 21-point victory. Boykins, a 6’3” freshman, led the Dragons with 23 points during the night.

The Dragons Varsity will play the Wolves at San Augustine High School on December 20, at 7 p.m.

December 16, 2016 - This fall Center had its first soccer season. With the help of so many volunteers and parents, it was a successful season.

On behalf of the 13U champions, The Tornadoes, Coaches Sergio Rodriguez and Kevin Jones would like to thank everyone who helped and participated in making this a great first season. A special thank you goes to Jason Mitchell for setting up the teams and getting things going to have a soccer organization in Center.

We look forward to growing interest in soccer in Center and having many more soccer seasons! Congratulations Tornadoes and the other team champions. 

December 15, 2016 Center Roughriders Gymnasium – The Center Lady Roughriders varsity basketball team fell the visiting Huntington Lady Red Devils last Tuesday by a lopsided 57-35 score. Center fell behind 19-7 early in the second period and found themselves down 25-13 at the midway intermission.

Scores by Lady ‘Riders LaJada Hicks and Malaisha Cartwright helped CHS pull to within 31-14 of Huntington but key scores by Hannah Flynt helped HHS hold a 39-26 advantage going into the final period.

Huntington boosted their lead to 20 points and led 49-29 with 3:33 left in the contest. Center got scores late from Jakayla Weathered and Taylor Nichols but it was a case of too-little-too-late, as Huntington ultimately took away the win with a 57-35 scoring advantage.

The Lady Roughriders will play the Joaquin Lady Rams at Joaquin Rams Gymnasium, next Monday December 19, at 10 a.m.

December 14, 2016 Joaquin ISD - On Wednesday, December 14, Hana Bonner a senior student at Joaquin High School, signed a letter of intent to play softball at Louisiana College at Pineville. Bonner is a four year letterman and excels at sports including softball, basketball, track and weightlifting. She played third base last season but is versatile and capable of playing many positions.

Joaquin Athletic Director, Stephen McCann commended Bonner for her hard work and God-given talents. Many of her peers, including members of her family, were on hand to cheer her on for her many athletic achievements.

Louisiana College teams participate as a member of the National Collegiate Athletic Association's Division III. The Lady Wildcats softball team finished with an 18-23 record last season. They went on an early 8-game winning streak in February and finished the regular season with a 7-game losing streak. The Wildcats are a member of the American Southwest Conference. Women's sports at LC Pineville include basketball, cross country, soccer, softball and tennis.

Bonner still has her senior year at Joaquin ISD to hone her skills and to build on an already impressive athletic resume.

Center Roughriders Gymnasium – The Center Roughriders varsity basketball team gained a 4-3 advantage, with 3:30 left in the first quarter of Tuesday’s game, in route to defeating Huntington High School. The ‘Riders led the remainder of the contest and won the non-district contest by a lopsided 78-21 final score.

Center held a 13-8 lead after the conclusion of the first quarter and 33-10 at the midway break. Center at one point spooled off 19 unanswered points and led 46-10 with 4:30 left in the third quarter. CHS led 63-19 at the end of the third period.

The ‘Riders outscored Huntington 15-2 in the final stanza and took away the 78-21 home-court win.

The ‘Riders were led by Jaterious Evans who scored 17 points and had 5 steals. Octavius Evans scored 12 points and had 7 steals and 7 rebounds. Teammate Kyle Parks scored 9 points and picked up three boards.

The ‘Riders have now boosted their season record to 12-3. Conference action will begin on January 13.

The Roughriders will next travel to Jacksonville Friday, December 16 for non-conference ninth grade, junior varsity, and varsity boys’ basketball action beginning at 5 p.m.
