January 19, 2021 - Women around the country came together today in celebrating the dream coming true of having a woman in the White House and Shelby County women joined the celebration in 'Chucks and Pearls' style on the Historic Courthouse grounds.
Vanessa Davis, spokesperson for the group said, "This is a group of women coming together just to celebrate women. To celebrate a milestone, we feel like Vice-President Kamala Harris broke that glass ceiling. We haven't had, we've only had men in the White House in those major positions - President and Vice-President, and so to have the first woman Vice-President is reason to celebrate. And then to have the first black woman Vice-President is a dream come true for little black girls and young women who aspire to serve and to uplift and to build up our communities.
"'Chucks and Pearls' was a way to come together to celebrate one another and to celebrate her accomplishment and who she is and to just emulate her. Those are two of the things that are dear to her. She loves her Chuck Taylors and as she's moving about, she is so busy, she's been a D.A., she's been an Attorney General. So, she's been running around in suits and heels and it came a time when she had to get out of those and kick them off and get comfortable and just feel good in her skin and be able to do what she needed to do. So, her Chuck Taylors afforded her the opportunity to be able to move about like she needed to.
"The pearls, she is a member of the Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority which is a Greek-letter sorority which encourages young women, young college women, to be the best that they can be and to be leaders and to uplift other young women. They focus on having good ethics and just being of good character. The Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority was founded and incorporated by a group of women, 20 women, and they call those 20 women the 20 pearls. She wears pearls and the other members of Alpha Kappa Alpha wear pearls to commemorate their founders.
"Two people from Texas decided it would be a good idea and they went on Facebook and started a Facebook group called 'Chucks and Pearls' and it would be a good way to honor her. Now, there are other women who will aspire to wear pearls. Pearls are something that makes women feel elegant and always have. I think that its a good way to celebrate her and to celebrate one another as women."
"She had made a quote saying that the university that she went to and family and her sorority and the Divine Nine [Black Greek-letter Organizations] are people and things that are very important to her. I'm a member of the Divine Nine being a member of Delta Sigma Theta Sorority which is also a Greek-letter sorority that focuses on service, service to our community, and to leadership."
The women in the community who have celebrated Vice-President Kamala Harris and her journey to the White House wore their 'Chucks and Pearls' t-shirts along with wearing their pearls and their Chuck Taylors stood together for a group photo on January 20, 2021 to remember this moment in history.

January 15, 2021 - There will be a COVID-19 drive through testing site conducted at the John D. Windham Civic Center, 146 Express Blvd in Center on Wednesday, January 20th from 8:00 am-4:00pm.
The testing is free to all and no appointment is necessary.
January 18, 2021 - The virtual challenge for January "Photographers Choice" always has been one of my favorites. It gives each photographer the chance to show their favorite style of photography. Club members enjoyed a variety of Photography styles to select from for favorites.

January 18, 2021 - Focused Care of Center recognized our local Sheriff and Center Police Department for National Law Appreciation with lunch thanking them for all they do to protect our community!

January 15, 2021 - The Shelby County Sheriff’s Office (SCSO) is looking to add an unwanted medication disposal unit in our lobby for public use.
The purpose of this unit will be to allow the public to dispose of unwanted, expired medications in a safe way. The unit will be available to the public FREE OF CHARGE and access to the unit will be 24-hours a day, seven days a week.

January 14, 2021 - T-Town Nutrition in Tenaha celebrated with a ribbon cutting event Thursday, January 14 hosted by the Tenaha Businessman's Club and the City of Tenaha.
Speaking on behalf of both was Amanda Treat, Tenaha City Secretary, who welcomed the businesses owners Jalysa and Felicia Steadman.
"We just appreciate everyone, all of our customers and everything and we just thank God for the opportunity to be of service to our community," said Felicia Steadman.
Jalysa Steadman shared several of the products the business offers including protein waffles, meal replacement shakes, energy teas and protein bars.

January 14, 2021 - Shelby County Outreach Ministries will be closed on Monday, January 18, 2021, in observance of Martin Luther King Day.

January 11, 2021 - San Augustine actually had a beautiful snow last night. Our backyard birds flew into their suet and grain in numbers I had never seen. I am sure there were fifty or more. I took a lot of their pics this morning and I am glad I got an early start. It is ten o’clock and the snow is quickly melting.
January 10, 2021 - Due to the spike in Covid 19 cases, the Piney Woods Photographic Society January meeting has been cancelled. There will be a virtual monthly challenge “Photographers Choice” to be viewed on the club Flickr Page - https://www.flickr.com/groups/pineywoodsphotographic/
PWPS encourages everyone to stay safe and be considerate of others and hopefully February will be a better outlook.
January 8, 2021 - In the small town of Tenaha, Texas, any news is big news. This year will prove particularly newsworthy for Tenaha’s own historic King’s Nursery as 4th generation owner and manager Dr. Andrew King returns home to take over the family business.
Andrew and his family return from College Station where he earned a PhD in Horticulture from Texas A&M University and where he served on the faculty in the Department of Horticultural Sciences for the past five years.
Why now? “I thoroughly enjoyed my time at A&M University and genuinely appreciate the many friends that we worked with there, but as we spent more time away from the nursery, the harder it pulled on us. This nursery is a legacy that has been handed down from the previous 3 generations, and I’m finding out that legacy is not something you can outrun!” King’s Nursery, begun by Andrew’s great-grandfather and continued by both his grandfather and father, has been in continuous operation since 1915.
For many in East Texas, it is an institution, as many of their customers are also 2nd and 3rd generation. “It’s a very surreal situation to be helping a customer knowing that 60-70 years ago my Grandy waited on their grandparents. But it makes me incredibly proud.”
During his father Aubrey’s tenure at the nursery, the selection of plant material exploded as he searched for the latest and greatest in the plant world. Andrew plans on continuing this tradition. He states “a trip to King’s should excite you because you know you’re going to find interesting and improved plants that you can’t find anywhere else. And even if you do not know a petunia from a pansy, I’ll be here to help.” King’s will also be offering an assortment of fruit trees during January and February, over 25 varieties of tomatoes this spring, all the other vegetables that you will need for your spring garden, annuals, perennials, tropicals, shrubs, trees, roses, and much more.
“One of the issues that most folks have while designing their landscape or even putting together a fruit or vegetable garden, is that they’re not well-versed in plant material and therefore they just stick with a few plants that they know and have had luck with” says Andrew. “At King’s, we respect that; but we want to provide the opportunity for our customers to come out of their horticultural comfort zone if they so choose. That is why we spend so much time finding and growing new plants. If you come in 2-3 times a year, we want to have something new for you to try each and every time.”
King’s Nursery has had a longstanding relationship with SFA Gardens, the Texas A&M AgriLife Extension Service, and the Texas Nursery and Landscape Association. For generations now, the goal of the nursery has been horticultural education and innovation. There is hardly an East Texas Master Gardener group or garden club that has not heard a lecture by one of the King’s.
