August 20, 2020 - According to an article in the Lufkin Daily News, help is available for those struggling to afford their needed medications. The non-profit Community RX Help can assist people with their needed medications from the pharmaceutical companies for free.
Community RX Help is funded by the Nacogdoches Area United Way, the T.L.L. Temple Foundation and local donations. It serves the counties of Nacogdoches, Angelina, San Augustine, and Shelby.

August 17, 2020 - The Piney Woods Photographic Society held their regular monthly meeting this past Saturday. The August Challenge was "Spring Fling" with photographs submitted by members for voting by club members for their favorites.

August 14, 2020 - Shelby County Children’s Advocacy Center says 'thank you' to Shelbyville ISD, Tenaha ISD, San Augustine ISD, and Timpson ISD for participating in the effort to end child abuse and advocate for the children in your classroom.
School personnel represent the largest professional resource for reporting suspected child abuse and neglect in Texas. Thank you for being leaders who promote awareness and care about the safety of your students. We enjoyed being with each of you and we're so glad to have you back!
August 14, 2020 - Shelby County Children's Advocacy Center says 'thank you' to everyone who donated in this year's Back to School Drive! We were able to fill over 80 backpacks with school supplies to give to the kids and families we serve. We could not do it without the support of our community!

August 13, 2020 - Portacool, LLC has called Center, Texas, home to its global headquarters and manufacturing facility for 30 years.
The Portacool team recently presented local first responders with a monetary donation to the police and fire departments and 100 teddy bears to comfort children when working distressing incidents.
The Portacool team is thankful for the dedicated first responders in our community.

August 12, 2020 - OSHA generally recommends that employers encourage workers to wear medical masks or cloth face coverings at work to help prevent the spread of the coronavirus. OSHA recently issued frequently asked questions (FAQ) guidance to address inaccurate claims that these masks and face coverings cause unsafe oxygen or harmful carbon dioxide levels for the wearer. August 12, 2020 - Two Shelby County people received degrees during the 2020 Summer semester at Sam Houston State University.
From Center, Stephanie Presa who is a 2016 Graduate of Center High School received a Bachelor of Business Administration degree with a Major in Accounting.
From Joaquin, Christina Whitehead who is a teacher and coach at Tenaha ISD received a Master of Education, Instructional Systems Design and Technology degree.
August 12, 2020 - Shelby County Historian Walter Bounds shares a glimpse back to 1991 when the medical equipment in the closed Shelby General Hospital was shipped to Ukraine, Russia. The project was done by the Texas Baptist Men's organization who purchased the equipment, disassembled it, and shipped it to the Ukraine as a humanitarian act.
The 15 minutes of video gives a glimpse inside the now gone old hospital since it was torn down this month after the property was sold to Kelby McCall of Lufkin under KMJR Properties, LLC. The county accepted the offer from McCall during their May 20, 2020 meeting for $150,001 with the condition of the clearing of the property.
The building served the county after the hospital closed as a location for the county's probation department. However, the property had deteriorated over the years and had become uninhabitable without major renovations and the county chose to move probation to new locations.
Shelby County opened Shelby General Hospital on Hurst Street on October 1, 1959 – a modern one-story brick building with 39 beds. All local doctors serviced this hospital but primarily Dr. L. S. Oates and his son, Dr. Steve Oates. Within ten years the hospital was expanded but the voters were expressing displeasure about the debt. The hospital closed in the 1980s.
This video shows local men from First Baptist Church, Center, Texas who volunteered sweat equity to the project. The clip opens with Wayne Christian who is now a Texas Railroad Commissioner saying, "We're going to Russia with Love from Center, Texas."
August 7, 2020 - With school starting back for the 2020-2021 school year, 3Ps Auto Detailing, Pressure Washing is once again stepping up to help the community with a backpack school supply give away.
James Ragan said he wanted to help families hurting from COVID-19's financial impact. 3Ps purchased 50 backpacks filled with supplies and Ronnie Williams, a personal trainer and owner of East Texas Boot Camp, added an additional 30 backpacks for a total of 80 backpacks for kids returning to school.
Ragan and his family are waiting for more kids to come and get what they need for school. 3Ps is located at Southview Circle in Center next to the Ice machine.
August 6, 2020 - Center Police Department would like to say thank you to Mr. Thay Khourn (Mr. Lee) for his generous donation of water to the Police Department. Mr. Lee, who is the owner of Johnny’s Liquor, Superquick, Gooddays, and J & B Liquor has been a long time supporter of the PD and has donated on several occasions. The CPD is very appreciative of his support and sends out a big 'Thank You!'
