November 14, 2020 - DKE Nutrition celebrated with a ribbon cutting event on Thursday, November 12, 2020, at their location on South George Bowers Drive.
Members of the community including the Tenaha Businessman's Club and City of Tenaha representatives gathered at the business to welcome them.
Jason and Crystal Samford, owners of DKE Nutrition, gathered with friends and family and welcomed the public to their business.
"We're very happy to be here, I don't spend much time here, this is all my wife Crystal, " said Samford. "We are as of right now open Monday through Friday from 7 to 2:30."
Samford described the products offered are what are called "Loaded Teas," which he explained have extensive flavor options to choose from.
"What the loaded teas are meant to do for you is to boost your metabolism, improve your digestion health and help to burn up to 100 calories a day. They have 24 calories total and four carbs that are completely sugar free," said Samford.
Other items Samford shared are on the menu include coffee and iced coffee., He said the coffee is high in protein at 15 grams and two grams of sugar.
"Thank y'all for being here and welcoming us to Tenaha, we greatly appreciate y'all's support," said Samford.

November 12, 2020 - Veterans Day was honored and celebrated on Wednesday, November 11th in Shelby County on the historic courthouse grounds in front of the Veterans Memorial. Members of VFW Post 8904 and its auxiliary gave tribute to the men and women of the armed forces.
Larry Hume, Post Quartermaster, welcomed everyone and gave an invocation, "Almighty God, we stand here today to pay tribute to the great men and women, living and dead, who have served their country in the armed forces. Accept our thanksgiving for their sacrifices and the sacrifices of their families. Let us never take for granted their devotion to liberty. Let our spirits be proud of them, let our hearts be compassionate, and our minds clear and determined to give them the honor and the respect that they deserve. Amen."
All attending then recited the Pledge of Allegiance to the flag of the United States of America.
Hume then said, "Thank you for being here today. I know I don't have to tell you that 2020 has been an unusually difficult year. You know for some today it might be easier to forget about it and make a promise to make it up next year with a bigger celebration. But we the Veterans of Foreign Wars and the Auxiliary will never let that happen. You know, although we can't be within our beautiful old courthouse today like we were a couple of years ago with standing room only when we celebrated the 100 anniversary that ended War War I, we can be here and we are here to remember and celebrate Veterans Day. Large or small gathering makes no difference, we will always remember Veterans Day. You know, it's Veterans of Foreign Wars and its members are an organization whose primary mission is to serve and care for those who have served. We understand that Veterans Day has a deep significance. To us here today it isn't just another day overlooked and ignored, to the more than 1.5 million members of the VFW and the VFW Auxiliary it's a day to celebrate. A day to honor the millions of Soldiers, Marines, Sailors, Airmen, and Coastguards men who have selflessly gone where ever and whenever they were called."
Hume also acknowledged the birthday of the Unites States Marine Corps which was November 10th. He applauded the Marine attending the event who was Newton Johnson.
"Veterans Day is not just for those who died in service. Veterans Day is mainly for those still living. But we also remember those who have served and have since passed," said Hume before inviting all those in attendance to name family members who have served.
Newton Johnson, Post 8904 Senior Vice, placed the memorial wreath before taps was sounded by Post Commander Gene Hutto for all those who have served and passed whether in war time or peace time.
November 11, 2020 - Tragedy struck a local family changing their lives forever last August. Their story inspired Debra Schiron, who is a designer with Origami Owl, to nominate the Masterson Family on the Live Sparkly campaign. Schiron's reason is to "give healing and a new start to parents after tragic loss of their three children."
The annual Live Sparkly “Share the Sparkle” campaign was created as a way for the Origami Owl community to bless individuals or families who could use a little sparkle in their lives.

November 11, 2020 - The Shelby County Chamber of Commerce Ambassadors along with Lisa and Roderick Jones, owners of White Cottage Mercantile, will welcome Chamber members to a Business After Hours event on Thursday, November 12th from 5:00 until 6:30pm.
White Cottage Mercantile will showcase the fun selection of inventory while at the same time Chamber members will have an opportunity to network with each other in a casual and relaxed atmosphere. There will also be food and entertainment.

November 11, 2020 - Portacool, LLC welcomed VFW Post 8904 to their corporate office for a luncheon following the Veterans Day memorial program held on the downtown square.
Veterans enjoyed a bbq meal prepared by Darrell's Smokehouse before everyone gathered out front for a presentation.
As a token of appreciation, Portacool and its employees made a donation to the VFW Post 8904 in honor of the many veterans across the country and those that work at Portacool for their sacrifice and service to this great country. Bill Ferren, Portacool employee and Marine Corps veteran, presented the checked to Post Commander Gene Hutto.
Portacool, LLC currently employs 18 veterans. November 11, 2020 - The Center Woman’s Reading Club honored Jane Ruth Morrison at its October 15 meeting.
Mrs. Morrison has been a member of the club for 62 years. She served as president of the club in 1971-1973. She also served in many of the officer positions over the years.
In addition to her long time service to the Woman’s Reading Club, Mrs. Morrison is also a member of Beta Sigma Phi sorority as well as a dedicated and serving member of Center First Baptist Church.
She works at her family business Morrison’s Insurance and continues to play an active part in her beloved community and church.
When club member Montie Jones recognized Mrs. Morrison at the meeting, she said that “Mrs. Morrison serves as an example of the importance of family, church and community.” Mrs. Jones also went on to say that “Mrs. Morrison serves as a role model for all who are privileged to know her.”

Free meals, discounts, services for Veterans
November 9, 2020 - The U.S. Department of Veterans Affairs is maintaining a list of discounts offered to Veterans in celebration of Veterans Day on Wednesday, November 11th. Discounts include free meals and other programs. Due to COVID-19, some organizations are now offering discounts to Veterans all the time instead of the regular Veterans Day discounts to help avoid the usual crowds. November 6, 2020 - Family Traditions Southern Eatery and Catering gave a warm welcome to all who attended their Shelby County Chamber of Commerce new member ribbon cutting on Friday, November 6, 2020. Deborah Chadwick introduced the restaurant owners, Nancy and Jerry Lawhorn.
"I've always loved to cook; we love people," said Nancy Lawhorn. She gave acknowledgement to family members who help with the restaurant which includes her brother, Michael Broadway; son, Daniel Lawhorn; husband, Jerry Lawhorn; and sister, Tamatha Howard.
When asked about the menu and biggest sellers, Nancy responded, "We sell a lot of chicken fried steaks, a lot of fried fish. We've got a new menu that has a lot more seafood. We do a lot of home cooked desserts." Jerry Lawhorn added the restaurant also offers daily lunches.
Nancy described their home-style cooking, "Most people say I cook like their mother. So, y'all just come see us. We are open everyday except for Saturdays."
Family Traditions also does catering which includes casseroles that are take-and-bake-it anytime. They can be ordered for funerals or bereavement meals. During the holidays, they do the full holiday menu.
Nancy and Jerry serve delicious southern food six days a week. Daily lunch specials include BBQ glazed pork ribs, chicken spaghetti, pork chops (grilled or fried) and much more. They offer an extensive selection of hamburger options. There are appetizers, sandwiches and salads, and homemade desserts! For over a year, the Lawhorns’ have been serving delicious southern comfort food and making everyone feel right at home.
Family Traditions is located at 246 Tenaha Street in Center, on the corner of Timpson and Tenaha Streets. The restaurant is open Monday-Thursday 11am - 5pm; Friday 11am - 8pm; Sunday 11am-3pm and closed on Saturday.
November 4, 2020 - It's November and the Fannie Brown Booth Library is celebrating DINOVEMBER - a month long celebration of dinosaurs. We will have pictures on Facebook of our dino-friends getting into mischief. If you do not follow us on Facebook, just go to the Fannie Brown Booth Library page and Like us.
The Preschool Activity Bags handed out this month will be Dinosaur-themed.
