March 19, 2020 - Shelby County Outreach Ministries will be closing ALL programs for the week of March 23March 27 with the exception of the Helping Hands Outreach Center. Helping Hands will be open only on Friday, March 27 from 10-2 in order to provide assistance.

The senior citizens that are currently being served through our senior programs have received extra meals that will cover them through the next 2 weeks. They will also receive calls to confirm that they are safe, and all is going well.

If you are scheduled to receive an emergency food box for the month of March, please come to the Helping Hands Outreach Center this week, March 19March 20, to receive it between the hours of 9-2. Our lobby is closed to the public, so we are asking all clients to come to the door, and we will assist them from there. You may be required to show your ID.

For information, please call us at 936-598-4990. Thank you.

Update: Governor Gregg Abbott issued an order on March 22, 2020 which directed all licensed health care professionals and facilities to postpone all surgeries and procedures that are not immediately, medically necessary to correct a serious medical condition or to preserve the life of a patient who without immediate performance of the surgery or procedure would be at risk for serious adverse medical consequences or death, as determined by the patient’s physician. The order will remain in effect until 11:59pm on April 21st unless it is changed or rescinded by the Governor.

March 18, 2020 - Dr. Kyle Coffin’s dental office has rescheduled all non-essential appointments and will be closed until April 21st per the recommendations of the American Dental Association.

Dr. Coffin would like to thank everyone for their understanding during this time and wants to assure his patients that he is still available for limited emergency situations. His emergency number, which you can call or text, is available via the office voicemail and he is also available for contact through the office Facebook page.

The office phone number is 936-598-6181. Non-urgent messages can be left on the office voicemail and will be checked periodically.

March 18, 2020 - We at HOPE Community Medicine would like the public to know that we are seeing all patients at our clinics. We do have protocols in place to insure the safety of all patients. We ask that if you have an active temperature above 99.8 that you call our office first to receive instructions on how to proceed next. You will be asked some questions about your illness and recent travel history. We will then determine what precautions and testing need to occur next, to insure you are treated correctly, and with the upmost safety to yourself and others.

Please be patient as we are in daily communication with the CDC and the Texas Department of Health and protocols for testing and treatment may change as this current crisis unfolds. If you have severe difficulty breathing or are in serious distress please go straight to the Emergency Room. Thank you for your cooperation and patience during this time of uncertainty.

March 18, 2020 - Due to the Coronavirus, Shelby County's Democrat County convention for Saturday the 21st of March, at 12:30pm, at the Pizzeria, is at the moment still on.

If you don't wish to be a delegate for the state convention in June down in San Antonio you are exempt from coming, but welcome. It will be a short meeting. I will be there of course. We have a slot of 7 delegates for Shelby county, myself included. If you would like to be a delegate, you may come and sign the sheet, or use the notice that was given out with the ballot on Super Tuesday. You may reach me at anytime. Thank you.

March 16, 2020 - The Health and Fitness Fair has been postponed. We have communicated with a number of health care providers and we are all in agreement that it is best to postpone the Health and Fitness Fair until later in the year.

Our plans are to reschedule the Health and Fitness Fair for fall when we will be able to offer the same screenings and testing as well as offer flu shots.

We apologize for any inconvenience but the health and safety of our community is a number one priority.

March 12, 2020 - The Shelby County Children’s Advocacy Center received a grant in the amount of $25,500 from T.L.L. Temple Foundation to purchase a top quality camera and digital image storage system for our onsite forensic medical exam program. The addition of the Secure Digital Forensic Imaging (SDFI) Camera System and the SDFI Store and Send System is the latest step the SCCAC has taken in our effort to make a difficult experience easier for child victims of sexual assault.

This equipment ensures that we are capturing, preserving, and sharing evidence with investigators in the best and most secure way possible. Our nurses, who have been specifically trained to provide sexual assault forensic exams for children, recently completed training on the use of the new camera and computer system. We are grateful to T.L.L. Temple Foundation for supporting our efforts to serve the children of Shelby and San Augustine Counties.

The T.L.L. Temple Foundation works alongside families and communities to build a thriving Deep East Texas and to alleviate poverty, creating access and opportunities for all. In support of its mission, the foundation makes grants in the areas of education, economic development and community revitalization, health, human services, arts and culture, and conservation and the environment.
