September 30, 2019 - David Mathis, Music Director of First Baptist Church in Center, led members of the Golden Harvest Ministries Club  in favorite hymns at the September 16 program. He also gave background and history of each song and information about the song writer. Linda Bordelon decorated the tables with colorful pot plants which were used as door prizes as a Center Garden Club project.

President Bobbie Nutt, Vice President of Programs Linda Anderson, and Secretary Ellen Manning were presented Fall mums.

September 30, 2019 (Doo Dah Parade Photos - Album1, Album2) - The 43rd East Texas Poultry Festival Doo Dah Parade, Sponsored by Center Tire Company, was held Wednesday, September 25th, on the Historic Downtown Center Square. A large number of spectators enjoyed the Queen’s Court candidate floats, civic organization and business entries. Junior Chamber of Commerce and Young Ambassador students and the Shelby Chick led the parade.

September 28, 2019 (Photos - Album1, Album2) - Kristen Orsak was crowned the 2019 East Texas Poultry Festival Queen at the 43rd Annual ETPF Queen’s Scholarship Pageant held Saturday, September 28th. Orsak was crowned by 2018 Queen Abigail Hooper.

First runner up was announced to be Tatum Mettauer and second runner up was Kaitlin Williams.

September 27, 2019 - On Wednesday, September 25, Center Christian Academy staff, students and parents joined around their flagpole to pray for the schools of Shelby County.  During this student led event, the students recognized the importance of praying for schools, country and first responders, honored our Country, State and Religion with pledges and sang the Star Spangled Banner.  After the event, donuts and juice were provided by the school’s Parent Teacher Organization.

September 27, 2019 - Great News! The Shelby County Historical Society (Museum) would like to invite everyone to come by the booth at the Poultry Festival, October 3-5. The Museum has had the 1988 Shelby County History Book reprinted and it will be available for purchase during the Festival.

This is the large book with 900 pages of family histories, stories about early Shelby County history and much much more. This book has been out of print for years.

There will be a limited number of books for sale - 30 hardback books at a cost of $125 and 20 paperback books for $80. We will have other items for sale so be sure to stop by and pick up a book or two. Remember to bring cash or a check as the Museum will not be able to accept credit card payments.

September 27, 2019 - Who can eat the most wings tossed in ridiculously hot sauces? Find out at another new addition to the Poultry Festival, the Wing It Contest.

This hot new event will take place on Saturday, October 5th at 5:30, right after the Chicken Clucking Contest at the main stage. Registration will begin at 5:00pm. The first 12 to sign will participate in the 1st Annual Wing It Hot Wing Eating Contest.

There will be 2 rounds. Eight wings in each round. If you can eat all eight in the 6 minute time limit then you move on to the second with a much hotter sauce. The first contestant to eat all eight wings in the second will win the contest. You must provide proof you are over the age of 18 and sign a waiver and release of liability form before being allowed to enter the competition. 

If you love spicy foods and feel confident enough to take on the spicy challenge we will see you at 5:00pm under the big tent on October 5th. Winner will receive a trophy and bragging rights.

September 25, 2019 - Representative of the Women's Shelter, Kailey Grimes (left) accepted decorated bags from Delta Gamma President Wendy Watson (right) from their recent project. Delta Gamma members donated toiletries to fill the bags after they hand stenciled designs during their September meeting.

Delta Gamma is the local chapter of Delta Kappa Gamma International Society of key women educators.

Update:  (Sold Out) The deadline for pre-orders was Friday. Individuals are welcome to come to the square to buy a Fajita Luncheon Plate while supplies last.


September 20, 2019 (Fajita Luncheon Order Form- The 43rd Annual East Texas Poultry Festival kicks off with the Chicken Fajita Lunch, sponsored by East Texas Poultry Supply, Wednesday, September 25th at 11:00 a.m. on the Historic Downtown Center Square.

According to Chairman, Bryan Wages, the lunch includes two chicken fajitas, chips, salsa and a drink for $7 per plate and delivery is available for 5 or more advance orders by calling 936-598-3682, faxing an order form to 936-598-5032 or emailing info@shelbycountychamber.com by Friday, September 20th. An order form for the Fajita Lunch, as well as other Poultry Festival Events, is available at the Chamber of Commerce offices on the historic downtown square or on the Poultry Festival Event page on the Chamber website, www.shelbycountychamber.com.

The Doo Dah Parade will be held later in the day on the 25th. Center Tire Company is the Platinum Sponsor for the Doo Dah Parade. Participants will line up at Farmers State Bank Drive-Thru at 4:00. The parade will circle the historic downtown square led by the Shelby County Junior Chamber of Commerce at 4:30. Everyone is encouraged to either watch or participate in the parade. Ride your bike, bring your pet (on a leash), promote your business or organization! Just show up ready to have fun!

September 25, 2019 - On Wednesday, September 18th, AgriLife Extension and Shelby County Chamber of Commerce Health and Fitness Committee kick-off registration for the annual fall Walk Across Texas worksite wellness and county challenge.

Participating in this challenge is easy –

1. Recruit a team of up to eight people (fewer team members are permitted, but no more than 8 members per team) and select a team captain.

2. Team captains; stop by the Extension office and pick-up your team registration packet and have your team complete individual registration forms (forms can also be emailed to you).

3. Select your team t-shirt color and complete order form $15 each.

4. Submit team registration packet to the Extension office no later than September 27th and entry fee of four cans of non-perishable food per person which will be given to the Shelby County Outreach Ministries food pantry.

5. Start walking and logging your steps or activity on September 30th! Each team member need only walk 2.5 miles or complete 20 minutes of physical activity each day. The goal is to walk at least 900 miles either as a team (the distance from Center to El Paso) in eight weeks. You can walk around the park, your neighborhood, at the gym, wherever your feet will take you to meet the goal. That’s only a little over 16 miles per week or 2.5 miles per day per eight-member team!

6. The Get Going event is scheduled for Saturday, October 5th in conjunction with the East Texas Poultry Festival CrossFit 5K Chicken Fun Run/Walk.

7. This 8-week challenge will wrap up on Friday, November 22nd.

This challenge is open to the public, worksites, and both adult and youth. The Extension office is located at 266 Nacogdoches Street in Center and the office is open Monday – Friday, 8:00 a.m. – 4:30 p.m. Deadline to register is Friday, September 27th at 3:30 p.m. All winners will be announced on December 3, 2019. Prizes will be given to the top three teams and top three walkers. So, form a team of 8, choose your team captain, register your team beginning September 18th and let’s walk on, Shelby County!
