May 20, 2019 - Center Garden Club met for a luncheon, a special Mother's Day tribute, and an officer installation on May 15 in the home of Carolyn Bounds.
The following officers were installed by a former Club President Carolyn Bounds: President, Carole Chance; FIrst Vice President, Colleen Doggett; Second Vice President, Pam Sykes; Secretary, Robbie Kerr; Treasurer, Cherry Jones; Librarian, Lisa Albers; and Parliamentarian, Linda Bordelon.
May 20, 2019 - I'll tell you what!!! The Piney Woods Photographic Society (PWPS) members that submitted photographs to the Challenge really showed off!!!! So many different pics and techniques were demonstrated in this month's Challenge - "Flowers." Really expanding your horizons here!
ALL of the 27 submitted photographs are 1st Place material, unfortunately voting only allows for the 3 most favorite; or in this case 5! I myself was really impressed with the number of unique style of photographs shown here. "Wonderful pics people!!!"
These photographs were voted as favorites among members present at the regular monthly meeting held this past Saturday.
This goes to show that the Piney Woods Photographic Society is a great club to learn more about photography tips, techniques and equipment. The improvements shown by each member indicate such.

May 20, 2019 - Officers for the year 2019 – 2020 of Shelby County Memorial Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 8904 Auxiliary were installed at their monthly meeting on Saturday, May 18.
Officers are (from left, middle row and seated) Carolyn Umbrell, Trustee # 3; Joy Hutto, Chaplain; Paul Risinger (sitting), Guard; Beverly Langford, Secretary; Sandy Risinger, Sr. Vice; Mary Fausett, President; and Theresa Hume, Treasurer. Installing Officer (back row) was past District 19 Commander and Post 8904 Quartermaster Larry Hume.
May 17, 2019 - 50 Women of Impact met on May 9, 2019 and voted to give HOPE Community Medical $7,900 with more to come to support their efforts to establish a new, dedicated fund to help with medical needs. As of May 17th, the funds collected from the group have grown to a total of $9,900 to HOPE Community Medical and raises the total donated by the 50 Women of Impact to $68,300 within a 19 months time frame!
The presentation was made by Lynda K. Russell and Rose Specter and they explained the use of the funds is specifically for off-setting the cost of specialty care, labs, CT scans, MRIs, and surgery for people in the area who are "working poor" and do not qualify for any other assistance. The money is designated strictly to be used to help others in need and no funds will be used for salaries or operations.
The 50 Women of Impact group organized and held their first meeting in November of 2017 with the hopes of getting 50 women to give $100 each quarter for a combined contribution to an elected organization. The first meeting surpassed the 50 women with 94 inaugural members. The group has continued to grown and they meet once a quarter to donate funds. Past recipients are the Shelby County Welfare Board; AgriLife Extension, Shelby Family Consumer Science program; Fannie Brown Booth Memorial Library; Boo's Battle Cancer Fund; Shelby County Outreach Ministries; Jon, Macy and Misty Bush Foundation.

May 13, 2019 - The Shelbyville Lion's Club recently held a fundraiser to benefit the club's scholarship program, and the winner was announced during the Take a Kid Fishing (TAKF) event at Huxley Bay Marina.
As TAKF came to a close for 2019, the winner's name was drawn on the stage and announced to be Becky Elliott.
Monday, May 13, 2019, Lion Glenn Johnson met with Elliott at Hometown Marina in Center, the business which donated the boat, to present her with her prize.
May 13, 2019 - The Fannie Brown Booth Library and the officers of the Friends of the Library would like to thank the community for its generous support of the Library Book Sale held at the end of April. The success of the book sale was due to the work of all involved. This includes the community members who purchased books, volunteers who worked, before, after and at the sale, and those who gave special monetary donations and book donations.
The library would like to give special recognition and appreciation for the many hours of planning and preparation by all the members of the Friends of the Library group. You are truly an asset to the library.

May 10, 2019 - Jonathan Liker, a Shelby County Outreach Ministries (SCOM) fundraiser committee member, drew the name of Ginia Hooper for the winner of the Mother's Day Gift Basket raffle on Friday, May 10, 2019 at the Senior Nutrition Site.
Ginia Hooper wasn't present at the drawing; however, her mother, Ann Hooper, was at the Senior Nutrition Site! Mrs. Hooper was delighted to be able to deliver the Mother's Day basket to her daughter!
Sherry Harding, SCOM Executive Director, express appreciation, "We would just like to thank all the people who have bought raffle tickets; these proceeds go to help support the ministries we have in place. Because of raffles like this, we were able to feed 16,888 meals to senior citizens last year, assist 4,062 needs in the community, giving out 3,312 emergency food boxes which feed 6,582 people."
The senior meals are provided through the Senior Nutrition Site and the Meals on Wheels Program. The food boxes are provided through the Helping Hands program. The food distributed through the Helping Hands is estimated at $165,600.
Shelby County Today and Shelby County Outreach Ministries would like to wish all mothers a "Happy and Blessed Mother's Day!"
May 10, 2019 - On Thursday, March 28th the Tenaha Fire Department replaced the antenna for their department's radio system.
Mark Odom, Tenaha Fire Department Fire Chief, said, "We have had trouble for several months with our radios. With this new antenna we hope to be able to communicate with our trucks anywhere in our area. We would like to thank David Chandler with Chandler Tree Service for his help and his bucket truck."
May 7, 2019 - A strong tornado which blew through San Augustine County and parts of Shelby County caused significant damage on April 24, 2019, to parts of San Augustine.
In effort to assist those in need as a result of the incident, on April 30, 2019 a group of Shelby County Constables put together their resources to deliver supplies of food and water to San Augustine.
Constables Jamie Hagler, Pct. 2; Zack Warr, Pct. 1; Roy Cheatwood, Pct. 3, and Deputy Constable Newton Johnson put together supplies from area businesses.
The constables gathered at Double J BBQ in Shelbyville where Hagler prepared 100 half chicken plates. Nuverra Environmental Solutions contributed two pallets of bottled water and Quick Stop of Joaquin (Robin Connell) donated several cases of carbonated beverages.
Brookshire Brothers of Joaquin provided water and paper products and Whataburger of Joaquin contributed supplies as well. Raymond Construction also contributed to the constables efforts.
