June 17, 2016 - The "Center Garden Club" is awarding Mrs. Rossie Ransom from Shelbyville, Texas with "Yard of the Month. This precious lady loves flowers! She chose perennials for her landscapes to bring magic into her surroundings. They are delicate flowers that return year after year.

June 16, 2016 - Shelby County Memorial VFW Post 8904 and the Auxiliary celebrated Flag Day this past Tuesday with the staff and residents of Holiday Nursing Home.  The post led those in attendance in the Pledge of Allegiance and then Christina Leary with her beautiful voice sang the National Anthem.  Later in the morning Flag Day was observed with the Senior Nutrition Center on Loop 500.  A new US and Texas Flag was hoisted and lunch was enjoyed afterwards.

June 14, 2016 - Few Timpson citizens know our town better than Timpson Area Genealogy and Heritage Society June speaker James Lowell Bogue. Born into a well-known Timpson family, Mr. Bogue attended Timpson schools and was a THS star athlete, going on to play college football after graduating in 1950. He married Timpson native Barbara Ann Young in 1951 and went on to coach at Woodsboro and Garrison before becoming Timpson's head football coach and elementary/junior high principal in 1963. In 1968, Coach Bogue was named high school principal. He became superintendent of Central Heights ISD in 1986. Retiring in 1992, he later served as interim superintendent of  a number of other East Texas school districts. He now serves as Timpson's Municipal Judge.

TAGHS invites the public to join their members in hearing James Lowell Bogue at their June meeting at 2PM on Wednesday, June 15 in the Timpson Public Library on the corner of  Austin and Bremond Streets.

June 13, 2016 - Shelby County Outreach Ministries would like to give a big thank you to the Center Post Office Employees and the entire community for supporting the recent Postal food drive. The participation was tremendous! Post Master, Steven Standley, stated an estimated 7200 pounds of food were given. The donation is a huge help to Shelby County Outreach Ministries, a 501 C3 agency, dedicated to feeding the hungry and assisting the needy.

June 13, 2016 - The President of the United States has issued a proclamation ordering the flag of the United States to be displayed at half-staff from now until sunset on Thursday, June 16, 2016 as a mark of respect for the victims of the act of hatred and terror perpetrated on Sunday, June 12, 2016, in Orlando, Florida.

June 13, 2016 - The Piney Woods Photographic Society is meant for camera enthusiasts of all skills and interests. Our goal is to help you become a better photographer and give you a place to meet others who share your passion for photography. We try to create programs and activities with information and instruction for all skill levels in an environment of support and cooperation.

The regular June meeting will on held in the basement of the First United Methodist Church,  on Porter St., in Center, TX. , Saturday, June 18, 2016, 9:00 a.m. - 12:00 p.m. For more information contact Billie F. Jones, 936-598-7778.

Visitors are welcome to attend our meetings with or without a member. They May meeting consisted of a workshop theme "Shooting in Shutter Priority" and a monthly Challenge of "Flowers"  The Challenge  was a really tough one last month per the results listed below:

June 10, 2016 - Mrs. Lynn Silvey was selected as Teacher of the Year by Shelby County Memorial VFW Post 8904 and was also the VFW District 19 first place winner.

She received her awards from Post Commander Gene Hutto at the Memorial Day program held, Monday, May 30th at the First United Methodist Church. Mrs. Silvey teaches HS English Arts at Joaquin High School.

June 8, 2016 - Area children were treated to a puppet show, performed by Puppet Wise, at the Fannie Brown Booth Memorial Library in Center on Thursday, June 9th during two shows held in the morning and afternoon.

June 9, 2016 - Center Garden Club hosted the 59th District III southern Zone Garden Club Workshop on June 8 during National Garden Week at the Community House in Center, Texas.

Representing 19 counties in the Southern Zone, 43 East Texas Garden Club members attended the following workshops:  Presidents, Linda Goller, Southern Zone Director; Treasurers, Jackie Hancock, District III Treasurer; Awards, Linda Jean Brown, Awards Chairman; Youth, Shirley Haley, Polk Co. Garden Club; Publicity, Linda Bordelon, Center Garden Club; Programs, Judith Bussey, Newton Garden Club; Open Forums conducted by State Texas Garden Clubs President Carol Moore and Linda Goller, Southern Zone Director.    Shirley Owens of Center Garden Club presented the afternoon program "House Plants:Nature's Air Filters."

Various plants and hanging baskets which were donated by Center Garden Club members were used as door prizes.  The Shelby County Chamber of Commerce provided a booklet on "Historical Markers & Sites of Shelby County."  County Agent Jheri-Lynn McSwain provided favors of flower seed packages, "Bloom Where You Are Planted" Note Pads by Center Garden Club, and pens for the workshop were donated by State Farm (Sandy Wheeler), Farmers State Bank, Shelby Savings Bank, Texas State Bank, and Agrilife Extension.
