May 13, 2016 - Pineywoods Beekeepers Association President Mike Bordelon presented a program on his success with the "Miller Method of Raising Queens and Splitting Hives" to 62 members and guests at their May 12 meeting in Lufkin, Texas.
He demonstrated a step-by-step procedure using actual frames and hives. The club meets the 2nd Thurs of each month (except in June where members have a picnic at a member's home and in December where members have a family dinner) at 7:00 p.m. at the Chamber of Commerce in Lufkin.
May 13, 2016 - Danquien Horton, formerly of Shelby County, is a multiple time cancer survivor and has participated in the Shelby County Relay for Life for many years.

Relay for Life is today, May 13th at the John D. Windham Civic Center. Come out and celebrate those who have won their battle against cancer, those who are fighting the fight, and remember those whose journey was ended by cancer. Come out and Relay to raise much-needed funds and awareness to save lives from cancer through the Relay For Life movement.
May 12, 2016 - Shelby County Judge Allison Harbison signed a proclamation on May 6, 2016 for the 11th annual Relay for Life of Shelby County Cancer Survivor Day on May 13, 2016.
For the first time ever the Relay For Life of Shelby County and their annual Survivor Dinner have been scheduled for the same night on Friday, May 13, 2016. It will be held at the Windham Civic Center....that's right it will be an inside event...also another first.
The Survivor Dinner will be held from 5pm to 7pm with the Relay's first ceremony of the evening, the Survivor/Caregiver Ceremony, starting at 7:15pm and our closing ceremony scheduled for 11pm. This is the 11th annual Relay For Life of Shelby County and we hope that everyone will come help us celebrate our Survivors and Caregivers and remember all of those we have lost to cancer.
Proclamation
Whereas, Relay for Life is the signature activity of the American Cancer Society and celebrates cancer survivors and caregivers, remembers loved ones lost to the disease, and empowers individuals and communities to fight back against cancer; and
Whereas, this year the Relay for Life of Shelby County celebrates a decade of fighting against cancer and we have raised over $800,000 dollars which supports the American Cancer Society's mission of saving lives and creating a world with less cancer; and
Whereas, Relay for Life, which raising much needed money for cancer reseach, also continues to fight for lifesaving laws to increase the federal research funding, reduce tobacco use, raise the awareness of cancer prevention, early detection, treatment, and patient support; and
Whereas, we, here in Shelby County are fortunate to have dedicated and compassionate citizens who are willing to work and support the American Cancer Society in their fight; and
Now, therefore, be it resolved, that I, Allison, Harbison, County Judge of Shelby County, Texas recognize all the many volunteers and participants from area families, corporations, churches, and civic groups and does hereby proclaim May 13, 2016 as "The Eleventh Annual Relay for Life of Shelby County, Cancer Awareness Day"
May 11, 2016 - We wish to thank everyone for all of the kind words, prayers, flowers and visits during our Mom's illness and after her passing.
Our family is grateful to Bro. Chris Collins for his kind and comforting words at the service. Thank you to all of you that were in attendance at the visitation and at the service, and to those who participated. There was also a kind gentleman that cut our lawn - Thank you James Barton.
We owe a special thanks to Steve Windham for catering Chicken Express for everyone after the service. This was very generous and much appreciated gesture.

May 11, 2016 - The Seven Sisters Red Hat group met for lunch on Tuesday, May 10 at The Sammich Shop inside Nettie's Nook on the Center square. They enjoyed the delicious soup, salad, and sandwiches. They were treated with purple and red decorated cupcakes and Red Hat gifts on the tables. Thanks for the royal treatment!

- CHS Homecoming Game – Friday, September 16 at 7:30 pm vs. Diboll at Roughrider Stadium.
- CHS Alumni Association Meeting – Saturday, September 17 at the Community House. Please note the location change! Doors open at 9. Meeting begins at 10 am. CHS Hall of Honor award will be presented during the meeting.
- CHS Homecoming Parade – Saturday, September 17 at 4 pm on the Downtown Center Square (Participants line up behind Farmer’s State Bank).
May 11, 2016 - Delta Gamma past president Carol McMillan installed the 2016-2018 officers at their May 9 meeting in San Augustine. The Delta Gamma Chapter of The Delta Kappa Gamma Society International serves key women educators in Sabine, Shelby, and San Augustine Counties.
May 11, 2016 - The Delta Gamma Chapter of The Delta Kappa Gamma Society International celebrated Founders's Day at their May 9 meeting in San Augustine. Dr. Annie Webb Blanton founded the Society on May 11, 1929 with 11 other educators while she was working at the Texas State Department of Education. Dr. Blanton was president of the Texas State Teachers Association, the first woman to serve Texas as Superintendent of Public Instruction, and National Education Association Vice President for 3 years.
Delta Kappa Gamma promotes professional and personal growth of women educatiors and excellence in education.
May 10, 2016 - First United Methodist Church, Joaquin Volunteer Fire Department and the Masonic Lodge of Joaquin are proud to announce the creation of the Mike Wood Memorial Scholarship.
This is a joint effort by three of the community groups that Mike was active in. They will share in fundraising for a scholarship to be given each year, rotating menu selections, etc., and holding the event at First United Methodist Church each year. Applications will be taken each spring, and the winner will be announced in May.
Applications can be made by graduating seniors of Joaquin High School, college enrollees, trade school enrollees, and fire department members wishing to further their education.
The first recipient of the scholarship amounting in $1,500 will be Carsen McFarland, Mike and Lavonne Wood's granddaughter, who is going to graduate school this summer at the University of Houston.
The first fundraiser will be a catfish dinner with all trimmings on June 4th, beginning at 11am at the Joaquin Methodist Church.
May 10, 2016 - The Shelby County Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 8904 and Auxiliary gathered on the historic downtown square on Monday, May 9th to hold an observance to commemorate the 71st Anniversary of VE Day at the Veterans Memorial.
A Memorial Wreath was placed by WW II Veteran Jim Cox in honor of those who served and those killed in action in the European Theater during World War II. Names of those Shelby County Veterans killed in action were also read.
Each year the World War II Allies remember May 8th, 1945, the date when they accepted the unconditional surrender of Nazi Germany. Adolf Hitler committed suicide during the Battle of Berlin so the surrender of Germany was authorized by his replacement, President of Germany Karl Donitz.
In the United Kingdom more than one million people celebrated in the streets and in the United States President Harry Truman who turned 61 that day dedicated the victory to the memory of his predecessor, Franklin D. Roosevelt. President Roosevelt had died of a cerebral hemorrhage less than a month earlier.
