October 17, 2022 - The Excelsior PTO Halloween Carnival is back! Come out for an evening of fun for all ages on Saturday, October 22, 2022 from 6pm until 9pm at the Excelsior ISD Gym.
There will be games for all ages, food, costume contest and take-a-chance tickets for your chance to win lots of prizes.
October 13, 2022 (Photo Album) - Eight contestants were brave enough to step up to the plate at high noon on October 8 in the “Wing It” contest sponsored by McWilliams and Sons at the 46th Annual East Texas Poultry Festival.
Rose Specter with T/R’s Steaks and More and Endless Possibilities was over the wings and when two of the contestants passed the Carolina Reaper heat level the contest had to end in a tie for the first time in its history.
Allen Nestle from Center, Texas and Weston Boyd from Georgetown, Texas both took the heat to win 1st place in the hottest contest of the festival!
The regretfully hot level of hot sauce which determined the win was Elijah’s Xtreme - Xtreme Regret (Screaming Hot) which is made with two of the hottest peppers in the world: Carolina Reaper and Trinidad Scorpion Peppers. It has a heat level of 800,000* Scoville Heat Units. The heat order was Frank's Buffalo sauce, Frank's Buffalo sauce Extra Hot, Extreme Regret Ghost Pepper, Extreme Regret Scorpion, and the tie breaker Carolina Reaper sauce.
October 12, 2022 (Photo Album) - The Shelby Sewcial Bee and Shelby County 4-H Heart to Hands Project presented 10 veterans with quilts during East Texas Poultry Festival activities under the big tent on Thursday, October 6, 2022, during their Quilts of Valor presentation.
Presenting the quilts were AgriLife County Extension Agent - Family and Community Health Feleshia Thompson; AgriLife District 5 Extension Program Specialist Jheri-Lynn McSwain; and Shelby Sewcial Bee representatives, Michele Clark and Margaret Smith. They each took turns introducing the quilt recipients and wrapping the veterans with a ceremonial quilts. The quilts each veteran takes home were on display during the festival.
McSwain provided additional background into the development of the Quilts of Valor program, "In 2003 a quilter named Katherine Roberts started the movement that became the Quilts of Valor when her son was deployed to Iraq. Since that time over 190,000 Quilts of Valor have been awarded across the United States. Our mission is to honor service members and veterans who have been touched by war in service with comforting and healing Quilts of Valor. We will be presenting 10 quilts today which have been sponsored by the Center Noon Lion's Club and local individuals."

Each honoree was then announced and their service was recognized. As the ceremonial quilt was placed on their shoulders, they were welcomed home and thanked for their service.
Honorees were: Sergeant Jeremy Bittick (1987-1993) (0:46 in video), Specialist Robert Hall (1968-1970) (2:23 in video), Sergeant Larry Johnson (1967-1971) (3:59 in video), Sergeant Major Robert Hughes III (1991-2018) (5:45 in video), Specialist Travis Snider (1968-1971) (7:34 in video), Specialist Kenneth Dickerson (1967-1969) (9:33 in video), Specialist Donald Moore (1988-1991) (11:17 in video), Specialist Lucky Gardner (1963-1965) (12:52 in video), Airman Apprentice Jack Adams (1956-1958) (14:33 in video), and Petty Officer Larry Jones (1965-1969) (15:57 in video).
October 12, 2022 - VFW Post 8904 and Auxiliary members gathered at the Shelby County Veterans Memorial on the Center square October 3, 2022, in recognition of Operation Enduring Freedom.
Larry Hume, Post Quartermaster, wished everyone a good morning and thanked everyone for being there to remember those who served in the war on terror in Afghanistan.
Post member Mike Wulf then delivered the opening prayer.
Hume then relayed the following stating that 21 years ago, America launched its counterattack against terrorism, attacking terrorist targets in Afghanistan and ushering in operation enduring freedom and the global war on terror.
To date there have been over 2,300 military deaths in Afghanistan. Among that number are the sons and daughters of big cities and small towns. A year ago,13 service members were lost when they were killed on August 26, 2022 near Kabul’s international airport less than a week before the United States was set to complete its military withdrawal on August 31. They also were remembered during the ceremony.
Shelby County, Texas as in all previous wars also suffered losses.
US Army Sergeant Kevin Roberts was killed in action on May 7, 2008 when his vehicle hit an improvised explosive device commonly know as and IED. He was not from Shelby County but married a local girl and fell in love with Shelby County. As was his wish, he is buried in the West Hamilton Cemetery in Shelbyville.
US Army Specialist Cory Bertrand died in Afghanistan five months later on October 14, 2008, one month before his 19th birthday. His vehicle also struck by an IED. He is buried in the Pleasant Hill Cemetery, also in Shelbyville.
In honor of those who served and sacrificed, Post Commander Richard Lundie layed the memorial wreath.
In honor of all the fallen Afghanistan war veterans and those who survived but have since passed, Taps was then played as presented by Past Post Commander Gene Hutto.
October 12, 2022 (Photo Album) - A fan favorite and an item of the festival to add to everyone's bucket list is the Poultry Festival "Strut, Cluck, and Crow" Clucking Contest! Participants each brought their unique interpretations of a chicken which resulted in two cluck-offs during the event to help judges name those top three in each age category.

October 11, 2022 - Rae Sterling celebrated their new location just off the Center square with a ribbon cutting event September 16, 2022. Members of the community, as well as Shelby County Chamber of Commerce Ambassadors were at the business to applaud its relocation.
Stephanie Elswick, Shelby County Chamber of Commerce Ambassador President, thanked everyone for attending the ribbon cutting and introduced Kaleigh Jones, owner of Rae Sterling. Jones then introduced her husband Colbey as well as their son Sterling.
"I just want to thank everyone for coming and welcoming me to the square," said Jones. "I want to thank my in-laws for letting me start out at White Cottage, that was a blessing."
Jones expressed a desire to have many years at their new location. She shared that a portion of the business' proceeds are donated to animal shelters including Nacogdoches, Longview and the ASPCA (American Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals).
"We just give what we can, in retail it's up and down. So we do, we try to give the most that we can," said Jones.
She said they plan to have events such as a customer can donate a bag of dog food and potentially receive a discount toward their purchase.
Rae Sterling has a selection of stylish clothes in all sizes at very affordable prices. Customers can find fashion tee shirts, denim, leggings, dresses, great tops, sweaters and accessories at her shop.
When you shop and make a purchase at Rae Sterling, customers will not only potentially go home with a cute outfit or fun accessory, there is also the added bonus that you have just helped feed a shelter dog. Every purchase feeds a shelter dog. Kaleigh Jones started Rae Sterling with a mission to feed shelter dogs with every purchase.

October 10, 2022 - The Shelbyville High School Chemistry class taught by Brooke Harrison performed a magic show Friday morning, October 7th at the 46th Annual East Texas Poultry Festival under the big tent.
Students brought a balanced chemical equation to the stage with a mixture of humor and entertainment. Several critical points of the performance involved a pumpkin, gummie bears, and ("wink, wink") water. Watch the video below to be amazed with an instantaneous reaction rate of enjoyment.
October 10, 2022 - After opening ceremonies of the East Texas Poultry Festival, elementary kids took to the stage to sing enduring favorites of the festival.
