September 29, 2022 - Twenty-one years ago, America launched its counterattack against terrorism in Afghanistan and ushered in Operation Enduring Freedom and The Global War on Terror.
To remember the service and sacrifice of Afghanistan Veterans, Shelby County Memorial Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 8904 and the Auxiliary will hold a remembrance program and wreath laying at the Veterans Memorial on the grounds of the 1885 Historic Courthouse in Center, Monday, October 3, 2022 at 9:00 am. Two veterans from Shelby County, US Army Sergeant Kevin “Casey” Roberts and US Army Specialist Cory Bertrand were both killed in action in 2008.

September 28, 2022 - The KTBS Community Caravan has been visiting Center all week in the mornings from 5am to 7am. Rick Rowe has been touring the City and highlighting the 46th Annual East Texas Poultry Festival which runs October 6, 7, 8.
The public is invited to join Rick Rowe and the KTBS team on Thursday, September 29th at T&R Steaks and More between 11am and 12:30pm. Dutch treat.

Members of the Center Noon Lions Club received the 2022 Chevrolet Colorado extended cab pickup from Ray Jones Chevrolet in Center at the clubs meeting last week. September 27, 2022 - The Center Noon Lions Club Danny Foster Memorial Fundraiser is underway. The local civic club’s primary funding project in which a 2022 Chevrolet Colorado extended cab pickup and four cash awards of $250 each are given away is scheduled for Saturday, October 8 at the East Texas Poultry Festival in Center.
Members with the Center Noon lions Club are accepting donations now for the fundraiser drawing. Proceeds will benefit the many community projects and charities supported by the civic club. Donations are $100 per ticket with a limited number of tickets available.
Tickets are available from any Center Noon Lions Club member, at The Light and Champion newspaper office at 137 San Augustine Street in Center, or Campbell Portable Buildings at Southview Circle in Center. The truck is on display at Farm Bureau Insurance on Hurst St. with tickets also available there.
The first ticket drawn October 8 will win the 2022 Chevrolet Colorado pickup truck and the next four tickets drawn will receive $250 each.
Through their humanitarian efforts from fundraiser donations, the Center Noon Lions Club supports local charities, schools, children's eyeglasses, children with health problems as well as assisting with the building of baseball, softball and soccer fields.

September 26, 2022 - Not too long ago, anyone wanting to do genealogical research had to visit courthouses, cemeteries, and seek out old family Bibles. While serious researchers still have to resort to those sources occasionally, there is now a wealth of genealogical information available online and in genealogical libraries. The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints has Family History and Life Centers in cities around the country for this purpose, with one located in Lufkin. Lufkin Family History and Life Center volunteer Delora Silvers Simms shared some valuable information about using the resources there at the September meeting of the Timpson Area Genealogical and Heritage Society, including the fact that they are free to the public!
FamilySearch is an ancestry database created by the LDS for use by LDS members to research their ancestry, but it is available for use by the general public. Whether accessing FamilySearch for the first time at a Family History Center or working at home, Step One is to visit www.thefhguide.com. There a new user can learn how to use FamilySearch, Ancestry, MyHeritage, and Findmypast like a pro! There are fun family history activities for families, individuals, youth, or children. You can enjoy research pages for over 65 countries and all 50 U.S. States. You can learn how to get what you need in an instant with Search Bar, Google Translate, Topics, and QUICKLinks. There is an easy-to-use training system for teachers and learners.
On the Home Page you can get started by watching the Overview Video where you can discover what the Family History Guide is all about in two minutes. You can then use the Tour button to take a self-guided tour through the website. UseSEarch to find content quickly and translate for other languages. There are resources for family history for Catholic, Protestant, Jewish, and LDS users. In the Vault, you can find links to hundreds of additional articles and videos on family history topics. Tracker allows you to monitor your progress with an online database or editable Word files. With Stars, you can mark all the videos you have watched and articles you have read in the Family History Guide. The Misc. Menu has Help, What's New, Quotes, Events, Contact Us, etc.
Simms shared that to find birth records for 1927 for Sanarate, El Progreso, Guatemala, for example, one would click on Central America on the Family Search records page. Choose the country from the drop-down menu: Guatemala. On the country's collections page, the top part of the page lists collections with indexed records. The bottom part of the page lists image only collections. The Records column indicates the number of records indexed. The camera icons indicate that images are available. Click on the Guatemala Civil Registration, 1877-2008 collection. Click on the option to brows through images. Now you choose the locality beginning from the largest jurisdiction to the smallest. Choose the department El Progreso. Choose the municipality or city: Sanarate. Choose the record type with the year range needed :Nacimientos 1925-1930. Use the tools available for browsing the image collections.
“I read today that 2.1 million Americans do genealogy, making it the second most popular hobby in the United States” Simms said. “Every person deserves to be remembered,” she emphasized. “FamilySearch is the world's largest online family tree, with over 1.2 billion ancestors included.” The Lufkin Family History and Life Center is located inside the LDS Church at 606 Bending Oak. They are open on Tuesdays from 9AM until 1PM. Their phone number is 936-464-4155.
The Timpson Area Genealogical Society meets at 2PM on the third Wednesday of each month in the meeting room of the Timpson Public Library on the corner of Austin and Bremond Streets in downtown Timpson. The TAGHS library is located within the Timpson Public Library and is open and staffed from 9AM until 5PM weekdays. Telephone 936-254-2966 and ask for the Genealogical Library.
September 24, 2022 - Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 8904, Center, Texas Commander Richard Lundie (center) recently presented Past Post Commander Gene Hutto (left) and Quartermaster Larry Hume (right) with their All State Medallions and distinctive All State white cover for the fiscal year 2021-2022.
Each year a select group of Texas VFW Posts are designated “All State” based on outstanding participation in National and Texas VFW programs as well as membership gains. Gene served as Post Commander from 2015 to 2022 and Larry has served as Quartermaster since 2008.
September 24, 2022 - Shelby County Memorial Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 8904 has partnered with the Shelby County Sheriff’s Office to ensure the citizens of the county have a way to properly dispose of their United States Flags. If you have an unserviceable flag, please bring it to the Sheriff’s Office at 100 Hurst Street in Center and place it in the “Retirement Box” that is located straight ahead as you enter the door. VFW members will then pick up the flags on a weekly basis for burning.
1. FYI: If your flag is simply dirty and still in good condition, it is permissible to hand-wash them with warm water and a mild detergent. Do not let the flag stand in the wash water as some color “run off” onto the white stripes might be experienced.
2. It is also permissible to re-hem torn or frayed ends.
3. If your flag is no longer serviceable and you do not have a ready replacement, it is better to remove it until a new one can be obtained. A flag pole with no flag is much better than one with a flag torn and tattered.
4. Only flags made specifically for exterior use such as nylon should be displayed outdoors.

September 19, 2022 - The Piney Woods Photographic Society (PWPS) meet this past Saturday and accepted entries in the ETPF Photography Contest.
Billie Jones with the PWPS expressed appreciation to those attending, "I would like to thank everyone that came to the monthly meeting, Saturday, to help accept entries for the East Texas Poultry Festival Photography Contest. Just to let everyone know, I have extended the entry deadline until Saturday, September 24, 2022. If anyone should ask about photo entries, have them contact me."
The September Challenge was "Long Exposure/Light Painting." This challenge made the group really stretch out of their comfort zone, which is always good to try something new. Congrats to everyone who participated in this challenge. A great job done by all.

September 19, 2022 - The members of Hochheim Prairie Farm Mutual Branch 110 vote to donate their annual dues back to the local community every year. Anyone who purchases a property policy automatically becomes a Hochheim member and has the opportunity to participate in their local branch. Members are assigned to a local branch according to their zip code. This year we were pleased to be able to donate to all of Shelby County’s Volunteer Fire Departments. We also donated to the Shelby County Cancer Fund and to the Shelby County Sheriff’s office. It is our pleasure, as Branch members, to be able to support what these organizations stand for and what they do for our community.
Each Branch consists of a Branch Board of Directors who are responsible for holding an annual meeting. The purpose of the annual meeting is to determine how the Branch funds are spent in the local community. September 19, 2022 - Shelby County Outreach Ministries (SCOM) was the recipient of the John R. Harris Grant this year. SCOM is honored and blessed to receive these grant funds. This grant will be used to help feed the hungry and assist the needy in Shelby County.
Outreach Ministries is striving to be the hands and heart of Christ in our community. This grant will allow us to purchase food for emergency food boxes, assist with utility bills, doctor visits, medications, emergency lodging, and so much more!
Josh Crawford, SCOM Administrative Assistant, expresses appreciation on behalf of the organization, “We want to extend our gratitude to the East Texas Communities Foundation and those involved with the John Harris grant.”
September 16, 2022 - In celebration of National Thank A Police Officer Day the Center Police Department's Auxiliary gifted the Center Police Department officers with goody/snack bags.
