February 10, 2026 - Delbert Jackson will share his efforts to document and preserve the history of black people in Shelby County with Timpson Area Genealogy and Heritage Society, Wednesday, February 18, at 2pm in the Timpson Public Library Annex.
A native of Shelby County and a 1980 graduate of Center High School, Mr. Jackson also attended Prairie View A&M. His grandfather, Sam McCowin, received a Union pension, but was erroneously portrayed as a black Confederate on a poster by Shelby County Chamber of Commerce. He works as a Union steward for UFCW at Tyson Foods.
Mr. Jackson is active as a community leader, advocating for Historical Markers for lynching victims ( Lige Daniela and Buddy Evans), and other areas of black history in Shelby County. He is active in community service projects, including serving on the Perry Sampson Park Renovation Committee and he initiated a neighborhood clean up campaign, Help Keep East Center Beautiful and Clean.
