August 29, 2023 - August 31st, 2010 marked the official end to US Combat Operations in Iraq. The Veterans of Foreign Wars will ensure the patriotism and sacrifices of this generation that included US Army Specialist Larry E. Polley, Jr. of Center, Texas who was killed in action are never forgotten by the American people.
August 24, 2023 - World War II came to an end with the formal surrender of the Japanese on September 2, 1945 aboard the USS Missouri in Tokyo Bay and this day has become known as VJ Day (Victory over Japan).
Shelby County Memorial Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 8904 and the Auxiliary will hold an observance on Friday, September 1, 2023 at the Veterans Memorial on the grounds of the Historic Courthouse in Center.
July 20, 2023 - On June 25, 1950, the North Korean Army began an offensive to invade South Korea that resulted in the capture of the republic’s capital, Seoul, within four days. The United States, the United Kingdom and other members of the United Nations moved to actively defend South Korea – an effort that would last until July 27, 1953, when negotiations concluded and fighting finally ended.

June 28, 2023 - Rufus Lovell was born in the far east Texas town of Shelbyville, Shelby County on February 18th, 1897. He and brother Sydney lived with their paternal grandparents Mary and Limas Lovell and a number of aunts and uncles. The only information about his parents that could be found is his mother’s name was Jennie Lovell.

June 2, 2023 - On June 6, 1944, 160,000 Allied troops landed along a 50-mile stretch of heavily-fortified French coastline to fight Nazi Germany on the beaches of Normandy, France. General Dwight D. Eisenhower called the operation a crusade in which “we will accept nothing less than full victory.” More than 5,000 Ships and 13,000 aircraft supported the D-Day invasion, and by day’s end on June 6, the Allies gained a foothold in Normandy.
