May 30, 2024 - On June 6, 1944, 160,000 Allied troops landed along a 50-mile stretch of heavily-fortified French coastline to fight Nazi Germany on the beaches of Normandy, France. General Dwight D. Eisenhower called the operation a crusade in which “we will accept nothing less than full victory.” More than 5,000 Ships and 13,000 aircraft supported the D-Day invasion, and by day’s end on June 6, the Allies gained a foothold in Normandy.
May 27, 2024 - Shelby County Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 8904 and the Auxiliary invite the public to their annual Memorial Day Program to be held in the 1885 Historic Courthouse on the square in Center on Monday, May 27, 2024. The program will begin at 11am.
May 20, 2024 - Memorial Day is Monday, May 27th, 2024. United States Flags should be flown at half-staff from sunrise until noon. All banks, schools, businesses, government offices, and citizens who fly a US flag that can be lowered are asked to please do so in honor of those Americans who have made the ultimate sacrifice. All other flags flying with the US Flag should also be lowered.
May 21, 2024 - Since 1922, the Buddy Poppy has been an integral part of the VFW community. As the VFW’s official memorial flower, the Poppy represents the blood shed by American service members and reiterates that the Veterans of Foreign Wars and the Auxiliary will never forget their sacrifices.
May 5, 2024 - Each year the World War II Allies remember May 8th, 1945, the date when they accepted the unconditional surrender of Nazi Germany. Adolf Hitler committed suicide during the Battle of Berlin, so the surrender of Germany was authorized by his replacement, President of Germany Karl Donitz.
May 3, 2024 - Elbert Alvie was born on New Year’s Day, Friday, January 1st, 1897, the same year Thomas Edison patented the Kinetoscope [first movie projector]. His birthplace was the far east Texas town of Center, which serves as Shelby's county seat. His parents, Arella Margaret McGee, and Alva King Williford, raised a large family of seven boys and six girls on a Joaquin and Center Road farm.
March 24, 2024 - Shelby County Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 8904, Center will be hosting a Veterans Breakfast at Tasha's Country Kitchen in San Augustine on Saturday, April 6, 2024, at 9am.
