April 22, 2020 - Since 2012, the Shelby County Children's Advocacy Center has hosted a Butterfly Release during the month of April to recognize April as Child Abuse Awareness Month.
In the past the Butterfly Release has been held at 4:30pm which is why this story was posted today at this time. April 22nd was the planned day for the 2020 Butterfly release, however, COVID-19 has caused so many community events to be cancelled which is why Shelby County Today released these electronic butterflies on the Around Town page.
April 22, 2020 - The Texas Observer published an article about COVID-19 and its spread among employees of meat plants in rural Texas counties mentioning the Tyson poultry processing plant in Shelby County.
On a Facebook post made on Tyson Foods - Center, TX page, the plant advised it would be shutdown this week due to a construction project. The City of Center did confirm the construction project was planned for this week for well over 3 months as the city has scheduled maintence on the water system to happen during the plants shutdown.
April 21, 2020 - Although Coronavirus is interrupting the lives of so many, Center Middle School teachers didn't let that stop them from celebrating the birthday of one of their work family members.
CMS teachers created a drive by birthday celebration on Monday, April 20th for 8th grade teacher Gladys Andrews. Andrews described her surprise, "My CMS friends circled my driveway, horns blowing, waving posters and leaving a big box of goodies. It was a birthday I will never forget. CMS teachers are the best."
April 15, 2020 - Shelby County Judge Allison Harbison reported 44 cases of COVID-19 at the beginning of the Commissioners' Court meeting which is currently underway.
Shelby County Office of Emergency Management was notified Monday afternoon by Texas Dept. of State Health Services (DSHS) of 10 more positive confirmed case of COVID-19 bringing the total case count for Shelby County to 44.
April 9, 2020 - Many questions are circulating concerning the number of COVID-19 positive cases as well as how those numbers are being generated and how the varying test results are impacting the Texas Department of State Health Services (TxDSHS) reported cases for Shelby County.
April 2, 2020 - Shelby County cases of COVID-19 have doubled from 4 to 8 total cases as of Thursday evening, April 2, 2020. The first confirmed positive case was announced one week ago on March 26th by Shelby County Judge Allison Harbison.
Kerri Shofner, Emergency Management Coordinator, said "We have been informed by The Department of State Health Services of 4 more positive confirmations of COVID-19 cases in Shelby County. This brings the current total case count to 8 for our county. STAY HOME-STAY SAFE!"
April 1, 2020 - A standing order was signed in the Northeast Texas Child Protection Court No. 1 by Associate Judge, Lisa M. Andrews on Tuesday, March 31, 2020 regarding visitation in all child welfare causes before the child protection court of Panola, Shelby, San Augustine, Rusk, Marion, Titus, and Morris Counties.
The order suspends parent-child and sibling visitation to contain the spread of COVID-19 and to protect all parties.
March 31, 2020 - Shelby County Today has received multiple calls from viewers asking about the stay at home order and after some thought the simplest answer I could come up with was to act as if you are a "grounded teenager who is scared of getting into more trouble with their parents."
As a teenager in the 80s and 90s, when I was grounded that usually entailed no extras. In other words, if I was allowed to go somewhere, I only went there and then straight back home! Mom was timing me and would know if I stopped somewhere I wasn't supposed to.
