October 15, 2020 - Women in the military have a history that extends over 400 years into the past throughout a large number of cultures and nations. World Wars I and II saw over 362,000 American women serving during war time. As of July 2016 women made up 14.6% of the US military and their role has changed significantly over the years from clerical duties to ground combat soldiers to fighter pilots.
September 9, 2020 - Friday, September 11 is Patriot's Day. All flags should be flown at half-staff from sunup to sundown. If you cannot have your flag lowered at sunup please lower it the evening before. If your flag cannot be lowered you can still show respect for the day by attaching a black ribbon or cord at the top.
August 26, 2020 - August 31st, 2010 marked the official end to US Combat Operations in Iraq. The Veterans of Foreign Wars will ensure the patriotism and sacrifices of this generation that included US Army Specialist Larry E. Polley, Jr. of Center, Texas who was killed in action are never forgotten by the American people.
May 19, 2020 - Unfortunately, due to the coronavirus and for the safety of all VFW Post 8904 and the Auxiliary, the post will be unable to hold a formal Memorial Day Program this year.
May 18, 2020 - Memorial Day is Monday, May 25th, 2020. United States Flags should be flown at half-staff from sunrise until noon. All banks, schools, businesses and government offices that fly a flag that can be lowered are asked to please do so in honor of those Americans who have made the ultimate sacrifice. All other flags flying with the US Flag should also be lowered.
If you fly a flag that can’t be lowered, you can still show respect for the day by tying a black cord or ribbon to the top of the flag pole. It too should be removed at noon.
March 20, 2020 - Due to the Coronavirus (COVID-19) and social distancing, the Wreath Laying in honor of Kosovo Veterans that was scheduled for Tuesday, March 24th, 2020 at the Veterans Memorial, Historic Courthouse has been cancelled.
February 27, 2020 - Gene Hutto, VFW 8904 Post Commander, presented Center High School teacher Nicholas Wheeler with his First Place framed certificate and check for $100. Wheeler was selected as the post Teacher of the Year for 2019-2020.
December 3, 2019 - It began when Japanese aircraft appeared in the air over Pearl Harbor, Hawaii just before 8:00 a.m. on Sunday morning, December 7th, 1941. When the attack ceased shortly before 10:00 a.m., less than two hours after it began, American forces had paid a fearful price. Eighteen (18) ships were either damaged or sunk, 180 aircraft were destroyed and 2,403 were dead and thousands of others wounded.
December 4, 2019 - In honor of the 78th Anniversary of the attack on Pearl Harbor, Hawaii on December 7, 1941 all flags should lowered to half staff at sunrise, Saturday, December 7, 2019 and raised at sunset, same day. All flags flying with the US Flag should also be lowered.
If you have an outdoor flag that cannot be lowered, respect for the day can be shown by tying a black ribbon or cord at the top of the flag staff.
