September 5, 2019 - One of the things there is too little of in our world today is praise. People have become so filled with critical ideas and harsh words that a little genuine praise and appreciation is often mistaken for flattery. Yet, every heart years for appreciation.
August 28, 2019 - Believe it or not, there have been times I have been accused of being too “narrow-minded” when it comes to spiritual matters. Yet, Jesus said in Matthew 7:14, “Strait is the gate and narrow is the way, which leadeth unto life and few there be that find it.” There are actually other areas of life where you find narrow-mindedness.
There is no room for being broadminded in the chemical laboratory. Water is composed of two parts hydrogen and one part oxygen. The slightest deviation from this formula means you don’t have water.
August 22, 2019 - Often we feel the church is not what it ought to be. We feel it just doesn’t quite meet “our expectations” In his inaugural address in1961, President John F. Kennedy stated, “Ask not what your country can do for you; ask what you can do for your country”. At the Republican National convention in 1916, Warren G. Harding said, “we must have a citizenship less concerned about what the government can do for it and more anxious about what it can do for the nation.”
August 15, 2019 - No matter how hard they might try, there are some folks who just never seem to win a battle over an excuse. You promised yourself when you became a Christian and turned your life over to Jesus, that you would allow nothing to keep you from being in worship on the Lord’s Day. Remember?
August 8, 2019 - Have you ever noticed how complicated some folks want to make religion? We live in a world of problems. Preachers even spend a lot of time pointing out the problems of our time. Yet, the world is not asking for an elaboration on the problems, rather the world is seeking solution to those problems.
It sometimes reminds me of the accident study conducted about accidents in the home. When it was revealed that 90% of all accidents occurred either at the top or bottom of the stairs, the computer solution was to remove the top and bottom step.
July 24, 2019 - When we were in Austin a few years ago, we realized that they had revived a relic from the past and installed parking meters on Congress Avenue. These were different from the ones I remembered from my younger days when you put your penny, nickel or dime into the meter and they registered your time. These took plastic and printed you a sticker to put on your windshield.
July 18, 2019 - If you remember from Paul’s letter to the church at Rome, he had a burning desire to preach the gospel in the Capital city. In Acts 27 we find Paul on his way to Rome, yet he is going as a prisoner. While there, he would have great success and members of Caesar’s household would be converted.
July 10, 2019 - Sometimes, I read things that are just too good not to pass along. I don’t recall where this came from, but it needs to be shared.
It seems that the preacher had just concluded a hot and scathing sermon on the sin of swearing. He had stated several times that he knew that one of his hearers was guilty.
July 5, 2019 - There are very few who are unaware that Pentecost was the birthday of the New Testament Church. However, there never would have been Pentecost with the outpouring of the Holy Spirit like the Apostles had if the upper room had been like the habits of so many in our day and time. If the attitude of the upper room had been like today, then the New Testament record might have read like this:
