Transportation Commissioners Approve New Projects for District

July 1, 2021 - Texas Transportation Commissioners met Wednesday and approved more than $728.4 million in new construction projects statewide, with more than $10.9 million in construction projects approved for the Lufkin District. More than $56.5 million was also awarded for statewide maintenance contracts with more than $1.6 million approved for the Lufkin District. Commissioners also approved $30 million in funding statewide for aviation that included the award of more than $1.2 million for the Angelina County Airport.

Bridge Work Beginning in Several Counties

June 30, 2021 - A pre-construction meeting was held Monday in the Nacogdoches Area Office, signaling the beginning of a new construction project that will include bridge work in several counties.

A bridge maintenance project is scheduled to begin July 6 in San Jacinto County and upon completion, work will move to several other bridge locations in Nacogdoches, Sabine, San Augustine and Shelby counties. Work will include various bridge maintenance and repairs at these locations:

Speed Limit Changes Approved in Nacogdoches, Shelby, San Augustine Counties

June 28, 2021 - A reduction in the speed limit has been approved on two sections of roadway in Nacogdoches County and San Augustine and Shelby counties.

In Nacogdoches County, the speed limit on US 59 South will be reduced from 75 miles per hour to 60 mph for 1.58 miles just south of the city of Nacogdoches. This change extends the 60-mph limit for an additional 1.58 miles southward toward Lufkin.

TxDOT Projects Include Four in Shelby County; Hurst St. at Foster Traffic Signal

May 27, 2021 - Texas Transportation Commissioners on Wednesday approved more than $271.5 million in new construction projects statewide, with more than $12.1 million earmarked for projects in the Lufkin District.

Angelina County was approved for bridge replacements on FM 2497 totaling $5.2 million. The work will be in two locations, at Cedar Creek and Cedar Creek Relief at the estimated costs of $2.6 for each location. There has been no timeline for completion set.

Lufkin District Prepares for Hurricane Season

May 11, 2021 – Lufkin District supervisors met Monday for the annual hurricane preparation meeting and outlined actions to take should the East Texas area experience a hurricane or evacuation from the Gulf Coast in the event of a hurricane there.

The 2021 hurricane season begins June 1 and concludes Nov. 30. The Atlantic hurricane season is predicted to be a busy season, with 17 predicted named storms, including eight hurricanes and possibly four major hurricanes.

Texas Motorcyclist Deaths Spike in 2020

TxDOT urges drivers to look twice for motorcyclists as more than 2,300 were killed or seriously injured on Texas streets and highways last year

May 4, 2021 – Despite less traffic on the road in 2020 and a 2-percent reduction in motorcycle crashes, safety officials are alarmed by a 17-percent increase in Texas motorcycle fatalities compared to 2019. On average, a motorcyclist is killed in a crash on Texas roads every day—last year 482 died. Motorcyclists account for 12-percent of all traffic fatalities statewide.

TxDOT Calls For Safer Driving As Work Zone Traffic Deaths Rise During Pandemic

April 26, 2021 - Unsafe speed is one of the main causes of crashes in work zones 

Even with less traffic during the pandemic, Texas work zone fatalities increased 9-percent in 2020 compared to 2019. That’s why TxDOT is calling on drivers to make safety their number one priority at all times and especially when passing through active construction and maintenance work zones on the roadway.
