Forest Service Seeking Members for Advisory Committee

August 30, 2019 - The Sabine and Angelina Ranger District is seeking candidates to fill vacancies on its Title II Resource Advisory Committee (RAC) created under the Secure Rural Schools Act. 

The committee is responsible for the development and recommendation of projects that will benefit National Forest land in Shelby and Sabine counties, as well as monitor the projects and provide advice to the Forest Service. 

National Forest and Grasslands in Texas to Hold Public Meeting to Discuss Oil, Gas Leasing Availability

September 25, 2019 - The USDA Forest Service, National Forest and Grasslands in Texas (NFGT), is beginning the preparation of an environmental impact statement (EIS) to analyze and disclose the effects of identifying NFGT lands administratively available for oil and gas leasing. The proposed action will identify lands available for leasing, leasing stipulations, and necessary amendments to the 1996 NFGT Forest Plan.

Forest Service Proposes Day-Use Fee Increases at Recreation Areas

June 10, 2019 - The U.S. Forest Service is proposing day use fee increases at recreation sites and adding a new day use fee for an existing recreation site on the National Forests and Grasslands in Texas. 

“The proposed changes will help to ensure fees are more comparable to similar public and private sites in the area, be consistent with inflationary costs, and help defray rising maintenance and operation costs,” said Forest Supervisor Eddie Taylor. He also noted that the last price increase for most sites occurred in 2003.

Forest Service Waives Day-use Fees for National Get Outdoors Day

June 6, 2019 - The National Forests and Grasslands in Texas is waiving fees at day-use recreation sites June 8 for National Get Outdoors Day.

“We hope this free day offers an incentive to all people to experience the great outdoors in our forests and grasslands,” Forest Supervisor Eddie Taylor said.

Camping fees remain in effect, but day-use fees will be waived on Saturday, June 8 at these recreation areas and trails:

Tornado in the Sabine National Forest Forces Temporary Closure

May 1, 2019 - Ragtown Recreation Area on the Sabine National Forest is temporarily closed due to tornado damage sustained from last Thursday’s storm.

According to Angelina and Sabine District Ranger Kimpton Cooper, the recreation area sustained substantial damage to the buildings and other infrastructure. It will remain closed to public access until proper assessments and repairs can be completed and the facility is deemed safe to reopen.

Public meetings scheduled for Lufkin and San Augustine to share information on natural resource and vegetation management projects in the Angelina and Sabine National Forests have been postponed.

Forest Service to Raise Camping, Day-use Fees at Recreation Areas

November 30, 2018 - Fees at some National Forest recreation areas will increase Jan. 1, according to Forest Supervisor Eddie Taylor. The last increase for most sites in Texas was in 2003.

U.S. Forest Service Officials Urge Hunters to Use Caution in the Woods

November 19, 2018 - U.S. Forest Service officials are reminding hunters of guidelines designed to make their hunting trips to national forests safe and enjoyable, while sustaining the health of the forests.
 
“Hunting season is one of the busiest times in the forest, and safety is always a primary concern,” said Forest Supervisor Eddie Taylor. “Visitors should check their surroundings and be aware of the possibility for falling limbs or trees. Remember, being in the woods is great, but you are responsible for your own safety.”
