Forest Service Seeking Members for Advisory Committee

June 1, 2016 - The Sabine and Angelina Ranger District is seeking candidates to fill vacancies on its Title II Resource Advisory Committee (RAC) created under the Secure Rural Schools Act.

The committee is responsible for the development and recommendation of projects that will benefit National Forest land in Shelby and Sabine counties, as well as monitor the projects and provide advice to the Forest Service.

Sabine Resource Advisory Committee to Meet

May 26, 2016 - The Sabine Resource Advisory Committee will introduce new members and discuss proposed project timelines at its meeting July 14 at the Sabine National Forest Ranger’s Office in Hemphill.

The purpose of the committee is to improve collaborative relationships and to provide advice and recommendations to the U.S. Forest Service concerning projects and funding consistent with the Title II of the Secure Rural Schools and Community Self-Determination Act.

Forest Service Controlled Burns to Continue into May

April 11, 2016 - This winter and spring the U.S. Forest Service fire personnel have successfully treated more than 77,000 acres with prescribed fire.

These controlled burns dramatically reduces the chances of a future wildfire spreading out of control,” said Peter Goetzinger, fire management officer for the National Forests and Grasslands in Texas.

U.S. Forest Service Waives Day-Use Fees for Presidents’ Day

February 5, 2016 - The National Forests and Grasslands in Texas is waiving fees at day-use recreation sites Feb. 15 for Presidents’ Day.

“Our public lands are open to everyone, and we hope these free days offer an incentive to all people to visit any of the 193 million acres of land held in trust for their enjoyment and use,” U.S. Forest Service Chief Tom Tidwell said.

Fireworks Prohibited in National Forests and Grasslands

December 24, 2015 - During the Christmas and New Year’s holidays, officials with the U.S. Forest Service remind the public that fireworks are prohibited in the National Forests and Grasslands in Texas.

Fireworks can create a potentially dangerous fire situation, and Forest Fire Management Officer Peter Goetzinger says law enforcement personnel will be watchful again this year.

Forest Service Extends Camping Limits

December 2, 2015 - Forest visitors can now camp up to 28 days at selected recreation areas in the National Forests and Grasslands in Texas.

Forest Supervisor Mark Van Every said he approved the change because for many who camp, the 14-day limit was wasn’t long enough.

“We heard loud and clear from our forest visitors they wanted to spend more than two weeks enjoying all the National Forests in Texas have to offer,” he said. “This will be a great benefit to our winter Texans who travel here to get away from the northern climates.”

Forest Service Waives Day-Use Fees for Veterans Day

November 4, 2015 - Many recreation areas and other venues in the National Forests and Grasslands in Texas will be free to the public on November 11 in honor of Veterans Day.

“We honor our veterans each November 11 and every other day of the year,” said U.S. Forest Service Chief Tom Tidwell. “We hope that this time will serve as a way for our veterans and other visitors to find our national forests and grasslands as a year-round respite, a place where they can take time out for themselves.”

Forest Service waives fees for National Public Lands Day

September 18, 2015 - Many recreation areas and other venues in the National Forest will be free to the public on Saturday, Sept. 26 in celebration of National Public Lands Day.

“National Public Lands Day is a great opportunity for families to visit our national forests, experience the beauty of fall foliage, and perhaps be motivated to join in with other volunteers and help us restore America’s precious natural resources,” said U.S. Forest Service Chief Tom Tidwell.
