November 1, 2021 - The Shelby County Appraisal District office will close at lunchtime from 12 noon to 1pm every day this week of November 1 – November 5, 2021.  This is only temporary because of a shortage of staff out for training this week. We apologize for the inconvenience.

November 1, 2021 - According to the Texas DSHS Covid-19 Dashboard, during the month of October Covid-19 cases decreased considerably over the previous month of September. The number of actives cases peaked after the first week of October to the 160 range and held for several days before starting to decrease drastically to now being less than 20 estimated active cases. Septembers highest estimated active cases count reached 223 mid month and ended the month at its lowest at 156.

In total, October had 14 new deaths reported, 139 new cases reported, and 263 estimated recoveries reported.

October 29, 2021 - Center Police Department officers have located a man on Friday, October 29, 2021, at around 1:30pm who was missing for the previous two days.

According to the Center Police Department, the man had gone missing from the vicinity of Pecan Grove trailer park and they have been seeking him since that time. 

Center Police Officer Bubba Lee discovered the man on property off Brown Street adjacent to and behind the trailer park in a wooded area.

Once found, emergency medical services personnel were requested to the area where they treated the man and transported him from the scene for further possible medical treatment.

October 29, 2021 - According to the Texas DSHS Covid-19 Dashboard, going into the Halloween weekend Covid-19 cases are lower than they have been since the end of July. The number of estimated active cases is 22.

In total, October has had 13 new deaths reported, 137 new cases reported, and 258 estimated recoveries reported.

October 28, 2021 - The jury that has been summoned for Monday, November 8, 2021 for the 123rd District Court Honorable Leann Kay Rafferty presiding has been cancelled. All cases have been resolved or passed.

Anyone receiving a summons for that day is released from jury service until they receive a future summons.

October 27, 2021 - State Highway 7 West just under one mile east of CR 1165 was the scene of a single-vehicle crash Wednesday, October 27, 2021.

A Center Police Department Detective discovered the vehicle off the roadway when traveling east during rainy weather.

According to Texas Department of Public Safety State Trooper Keith Jones, a black 2017 Nissan Altima driven by Maria Sofia Akins Tovera, 24, of Center was eastbound at an unsafe speed when the vehicle left the roadway to the right and came to rest in the eastbound ditch.

No injuries were reported as a result of the crash incident. A citation for unsafe speed was issued to Tovera.

Assisting at the scene were Center Police Detective Andrew Williams, Shelby County Sheriff's Deputy Chad Hooper and Deputy Shelby County Sheriff's Deputy Misty Ray.

October 27, 2021 - The Shelby County Sheriff’s Department reports the arrest of two on narcotics charges in the Timpson area.

David Nathan LewisShelby County Sheriff Kevin W. Windham reports the arrest of David Nathan Lewis and Beverly Kay Hurst, both of Timpson. On Tuesday, October 26, 2021, Sheriff Windham and Shelby County Sheriff’s Department (SCSD) deputies completed a narcotics operation at a residence in Timpson.

Intelligence gathered by SCSD investigators led them to believe that a substantial amount of narcotics and firearms were located at Lewis’ residence in Timpson. Due to information obtained, a Manufacturing and Delivery of a Controlled Substance (F-1) warrant was completed and served. As a result of the operation, a felony amount of methamphetamine (917.15 grams or 2.02 pounds) was recovered from the residence along with multiple firearms.

Beverly Kay HurstLewis and Hurst were also in possession of multiple items that had previously been reported stolen. SCSD deputies also extracted a one-year-old child from the residence who was being exposed to narcotics and firearms. The child was placed in a safe environment. Lewis is being held at the Shelby County Jail on bonds totaling $295,000 and Hurst is being held on $135,000 bonds.

It is with great pleasure that the Shelby County Sheriff’s Office (SCSO) reports this information to the residents of Shelby County. This is the first of many ongoing narcotics investigations with several more to follow. The SCSO recognizes that narcotics are a problem right here at home and we intend to pursue and persevere until our county is as safe as possible.

The SCSO expresses its sincerest gratitude to the Texas Department of Public Safety Troopers and the Center Police Department for their assistance in this investigation.

October 27, 2021 - The National Weather Service of Shreveport, Louisiana at 10:05am issued a Tornado Watch outline update. Tornado Watch 541 is in effect until 4:00pm CDT for the following Texas counties: Harrison, Marion, Panola, and Shelby.

At 9:31am CDT, the National Weather Service issued the following Special Weather Statement.

A strong thunderstorms will impact portions of south central Panola, southeastern Rusk, Nacogdoches, Shelby, Angelina and San Augustine Counties through 10:30am CDT.

At 930 AM CDT, Doppler radar was tracking strong thunderstorms along a line extending from 7 miles south of Minden to near Nacogdoches to 8 miles southeast of Diboll. Movement was east at 35 mph.

Radar indicated winds in excess of 40 mph with an impact of gusty winds could knock down tree limbs and blow around unsecured objects.

Locations impacted include Lufkin, Nacogdoches, Center, Diboll, Huntington, San Augustine, Tenaha, Timpson, Garrison, Joaquin, Melrose, Martinsville, Bland Lake, Neuville, Trawick, Woden, Macune, Etoile, Shelbyville and Burke.

PRECAUTIONARY/PREPAREDNESS ACTIONS...

If outdoors, consider seeking shelter inside a building.

These storms may intensify, so be certain to monitor local radio stations and available television stations for additional information
and possible warnings from the National Weather Service.

If on or near a lake, get out of the water and move indoors or inside a vehicle. Remember, lightning can strike out to 10 miles from the parent thunderstorm. If you can hear thunder, you are close enough to be struck by lightning. Move to safe shelter now! Do not be caught on the water in a thunderstorm.

A Tornado Watch remains in effect until 4:00pm CDT for Deep East Texas.
