January 11, 2022 - U.S. Highway 84 near CR 3831 was the scene of a single-vehicle crash on January 8, 2022.
Emergency responders with the Joaquin Volunteer Fire Department and Constable Precinct 3 responded to the scene to assist those involved.
According to Texas Department of Public Safety State Trooper Taylor Buster, at 2:30pm a grey 2018 Jeep Grand Cherokee driven by Elise Hutchings, 41, of Keatchie, LA. with passenger Ryleigh Toms, 20, was eastbound on U.S. Highway 84 at an unsafe speed for wet roadway conditions due to rain.

The Jeep hydroplaned and traveled off the roadway to the left and flipped several times before coming to rest upright facing the roadway.
No injuries were reported to have occurred as a result of the crash and no citations were reported being issued at that time.


January 10, 2022 - The Timpson Volunteer Fire Department responded to a structure fire on Bear Drive on Monday, January 10, 2022, at around 8:30am.
The structure, a concrete block building, appeared to have formerly been a garage which had been most recently used as a residence.
Fire fighters worked to extinguish the fire and detect its origin, and it appeared the majority of the inside of the building had been affected by the flames and smoke.
The resident appeared to have escaped the fire unscathed.
A cause of the fire had not been reported at the time of this article.








January 9, 2022 - The Center Fire Department responded to a house fire Friday, January 7, 2022, at 9am following reports of smoke emanating from a residence on Matlock Street in Center.
According to a witness at the scene who called 911, when he first arrived in front of the house he was considering the possibility the house was on fire until a man stepped out of the house and was seen exhaling smoke, and that's when the witness called 911.
According to the Center Fire Department, when they arrived they discovered a woman in the house as well as a microwave oven that was being used as a fire pit. The woman was evacuated from the building and the fire within the microwave was extinguished.

The fire department proceeded to ventilate the mobile home with fans until the remaining smoke was clear.
Fire department personnel requested the presence of officers from the Center Police Department.
Although the woman that had been inside the house claimed the man, who was absent when officers arrived had been living in the house for quite some time, Wendell Johnson who is the owner of the property said no one was living there.

No injuries were reported as a result of the fire and potential charges are pending at this time.

January 6, 2022 - The jurors who have been summoned to the Courthouse on Monday, January 10, 2022 at 8:30am are hereby notified that their jury service has been cancelled. This is cancelling only those jurors summoned to the courthouse at 8:30am on January 10, 2022. Those jurors are released from service until they receive a future summons.
The Jurors summoned to the Windham Civic Center at 10am on Monday, January 10, 2022, should still report for jury service.

December 31, 2021 - The City of Center Public Water System, PWS #2100001, will be conducting water system maintenance beginning January 1, 2022, and lasting until January 31, 2022. The system will be switching to free chlorine as its main disinfection.
This maintenance which is not a requirement, but is the recommended course of action set by the TCEQ/EPA for the accumulation of disinfection byproducts.
This is a routine maintenance procedure performed to help reduce unstable water conditions in our system and insure the highest quality of water being delivered to our customers.
During this maintenance period you may notice an odor or slight discoloration, but the safety of the water will not be affected. City maintenance crews and the Fire Department will also be aggressively flushing hydrants throughout the City’s distribution system.

January 5, 2021 - Hurst Street in Center was the scene of a major two-vehicle collision Wednesday, January 5, 2022, at the entrance to McDonalds and Walmart.
Following the collision, both vehicles were left disabled and off the roadway one in a ditch and the other on a hill.
According to Center Police Officer Brian Wright, at 9:58am a white 2014 Ford Fusion driven by Deryl Bishop, 94, of Joaquin was northbound on Hurst Street preparing to turn left from the median into the Walmart parking lot entrance.

As Bishop attempted to turn into the entrance to the parking lot, the Fusion traveled in front of a maroon 2003 GMC Yukon driven by Fidencia Deleon-Dominguez, 54, of Center that was southbound in the inside lane. The Yukon collided with the passenger side of the Ford and pushed it off the roadway to the right where the Yukon came to rest in a ditch and the Ford came to rest at the top of a hill just beyond the ditch.
Bishop was transported by ambulance to Nacogdoches Medical Center - Shelby Emergency Department for treatment of possible injury.

Deleon-Dominguez and two 2-year-old passengers were transported by ambulance to Nacogdoches Medical Center - Shelby Emergency Department for medical evaluation.
No citations were issued at the time of the crash and both vehicles were towed from the scene.
According to TxDOT crash data, there have been 31 crashes at the location of the incident since 2016.

In May 2021, TxDOT Commissioners approved projects in Shelby County which included the installation of a traffic light at this same intersection. Construction on this project doesn't appear to have yet begun.
