January 1, 2019 - Flags that have been at half staff for the past 30 days (November 30 - December 30) in honor of the passing of President Bush should now be raised.


December 2, 2018 - In honor and tribute to the memory of President George H.W. Bush and as an expression of public sorrow, the President of the United States has issued a proclamation ordering the flag of the United States to be displayed at half-staff from now until sunset on December 30, 2018.

Further, a National Day of Mourning has been appointed for December 5, 2018.

December 31, 2018 - The Shelby County Sheriff’s Office has had several reports of a phone scam that started Saturday, December 29, 2018 and is still continuing. The scam reports that the caller states he is Detective Brooks of the Shelby County Sheriff’s Office. The caller is telling individuals that they have a warrant for their arrest and is requesting payment for the bonds through Google Play cards, Green Dot cards and other forms of prepaid cards and failure to pay the bond through he requested form of payment will result in their arrest.

THIS IS A SCAM. DO NOT FORWARD THE CALLER ANY PAYMENT OF ANY KIND.

The Shelby County Sheriff’s Office will never call and request payment of any kind. If you receive one of these calls, simply hang up and block the number if possible, as it is a scam. If you have experienced a call such as this and have given personal information or payment to the caller, please call 936-598-5601 to report the incident.

December 28, 2018 - US 59 at the railroad underpass in Timpson will be closed in both the north and southbound inside lanes today to begin repairs to the damaged road surface and concrete culvert beneath. Single lane of travel in each direction will be allowed until work is competed. Be prepared for possible delays. Stay alert for workers, nearby moving equipment and reduce speed through this work zone.

December 27, 2018 - Several roadways across Shelby County are currently flooded due to thunderstorms which began Wednesday evening, December 26, 2018 and continued through the night.

Roads that have been highlighted as having flooding conditions in the county include:

  • State Highway 87 South near the gas facility at CR 3008
  • State Highway 87 North at CR 1451
  • US Highway 59 at CR 4657
  • State Highway 7 West in the vicinity of Excelsior School, East and West traffic lanes are severely flooded
  • CR 1000 between State Highway 87 and Roughrider Drive in Center
  • CR 1488
  • CR 1165
  • US Highway 84 East at Joaquin ISD to the intersection with State Highway 7 East
  • Trees down on CR 1273
  • CR 3737 through the bottom areas
  • CR 3267 through the bottom areas
  • CR 3173 half to 2/3 mile off Hwy 7, roadway is flooded and impassable
  • CR 3254 water still rising, impassable
  • CR 3156 washed out
  • CR 2545 in Shelbyville (10:37am)
  • CR 3219 flooded and impassable (12:22pm)
  • CR 3520 underwater with water over bridge (1:01pm)
  • CR 3550 water is up to top of bridge and over the roadway some but very shallow. Car should be able to cross over but use caution. (1:53pm)

Roadways in the city of Center which have been indicated to have flooding conditions include:

  • Tenaha Street
  • Southview Circle (US 96) south of the intersection with State Highway 7 West
  • Hurst Street at the intersection of Crawford Street

The Southeast portion of Shelby County remains under a severe thunderstorm warning until 6:15am.

December 26, 2018 - Subsequent to search warrants of two separate residences located on Booker T. Washington Drive, Tenaha, where a felony amount of narcotics was located, an arrest warrant for Sirtonio Evans, 32, of Tenaha, was issued. 

Evans was taken into custody the following day, December 19, 2018 without incident and booked into the Shelby County Jail on the following charges: delivery of dangerous drugs, possession of marijuana, possession of dangerous drug, and possession of drug paraphernalia. 

December 22, 2018 - County Road 2010 was the scene of a single-vehicle crash December 23, 2018 which resulted in the driver being transported for medical attention.

Units with Center Police Department and Center Fire Department were first to the crash. They assisted ambulance personnel in extricating the driver to an ambulance.

According to Texas Department of Public Safety State Trooper Jesse Fountain, at 12:15am a black 2007 Hyundai Sonata owned by Melinda Crouch and driven by William Elvis Rowland, 40, was traveling southbound on CR 2010. 

At that time, Rowland failed to negotiate a curve in the roadway, and traveled off to the right where the Hyundai struck a fence and a tree head-on. 

Upon investigation it was determined Rowland was intoxicated.

Rowland was transported from the scene by ambulance for treatment at Nacogdoches Memorial Hospital. The crash remains under investigation, charges are pending its completion.

 

December 24, 2018 - A Sheriff's Department vehicle chase came to a halt late December 22, 2018 when a Shelby County Constable and Tenaha Police Department Unit brought the fleeing vehicle to a stop.

Shelby County Sheriff's Deputy Taylor Fanguy was pursuing the white Dodge truck through the streets of Timpson until it finally made a run toward Tenaha from Bear Drive onto U.S. Highway 59 North.

At that time Jake Metcalf, Constable Precinct 4, and Kurtes Lawrence, Tenaha Police Department, converged on the location with Deputy Fanguy and all three turned down Railroad Avenue just behind the white truck.

According to Texas Department of Public Safety State Trooper Keith Jones, at 10:40pm a white 1997 Dodge Ram 1500 owned by Michael Nichols and driven by Ashley Nicole Pavlock, 30, of Timpson turned left onto Railroad Avenue off U.S. 59. 

The Dodge was struck in the rear left with the front of a black 2017 Ford Explorer owned by Shelby County and driven by Jake Metcalf, Precinct 4 Constable, as he made a PIT (Pursuit Intervention Technique) maneuver on the Dodge.

The Dodge then slid around and a black 2018 Chevrolet Tahoe Tenaha Police Department unit driven by Kurtes Lawrence struck the driver's side door of the Dodge as all vehicles came to rest in the roadway.

Once the officers retreived Pavlock from the truck she was arrested and transported to the Shelby County Jail on charges of evading arrest, felony 4; criminal non support, felony 3; driving while license invalid (DWLI) - enhanced with prior convictions for DWLI to a class b misdemeanor; expired registration, misdemeanor c; no insurance, misdemeanor c.

December 20, 2018 - A three-vehicle crash took place at the intersection of State Highway 87 South and Loop 500 December 14, 2018. 

Emergency personnel with the Center Fire Department responded to the location to assist with traffic control and other units until ambulances were available to arrive. 

According to Center Police Officer Andrew Williams, at 11:23am a 2012 Ford Focus driven by Timoteo Martinez, 54, was northbound on State Highway 87. 

Martinez failed to yield right of way at the intersection with Loop 500 to a 2003 Chevrolet Suburban driven by Mary Thomas, 36, causing the two vehicles to collide. 

The collision sent the Suburban into the westbound traffic lane of Loop 500 where it struck the front left quarter of a blue Volvo truck-tractor that was stopped at the westbound stop sign. The Volvo was hauling chemicals and was driven by Demones Lewis, 43.

Thomas was transported by ambulance to Nacogdoches Medical Center - Shelby Emergency Department for treatment of non life threatening injuries.

Martinez had an infant child restrained in back of the vehicle he was driving and it was uninjured.

All vehicles were towed from the scene due to damage. No citations have been issued at this time.

The Texas Department of Public Safety (DPS) is currently investigating a two-vehicle crash on US 96, about five miles south of Center.

The preliminary crash investigation indicates at approximately 5:45am, a 2012 GMC pickup was traveling north on US 96. For unknown reasons the driver of the pickup drove over into the southbound lanes and struck the side of a 2012 Peterbilt truck-tractor semi-trailer. The truck-tractor semi-trailer then drove off the roadway and overturned; spilling diesel fuel and then catching fire.

The driver of the GMC is identified as Andrew Williams, 28, from San Augustine. Williams was transported to Nacogdoches Medical Center- Shelby Emergency Department for treatment.

The driver of the Peterbilt is identified as Rodney Christian, 46, from Lufkin. Christian was also transported to Nacogdoches Medical Center- Shelby Emergency Department for treatment.

A HazMat crew and first responders are on scene conducting cleanup efforts.

Motorists should use caution while traveling through his area.

This crash remains under investigation. No additional information is available at this time.
