May 28, 2024 - Precinct 5 Constables were engaged in a high-speed rescue involving a runaway vehicle Monday, May 27, 2024 that traveled through the northern part of Shelby County.
Josh Tipton, Shelby County Constable Precinct 5, reports being contacted by the Shelby County Sheriff’s Department alerting he and Deputy Constable John Pope that a white Toyota Corolla was approaching Shelby County from Nacogdoches on U.S. Highway 59.
Nacogdoches County emergency services had transferred the 911 call from the husband of the woman behind the wheel of the runaway vehicle to Shelby County.
It was reported to dispatch that the vehicle was stuck in drive, the brakes were not working and the vehicle was reaching speeds of 90 mph.
“There was a lady in a small white car which was hung in drive, brakes wasn’t working,”said Constable Tipton. “She couldn’t stop, she couldn’t put the car in neutral, nothing. [Her husband] was trying to drive ahead of her and clear traffic so that she didn’t wreck.”
The constables were at their office in Timpson when they received the call, and they responded as a two-man unit in one of their vehicles.
Traveling on the southbound side of U.S. 59, the constables passed the Toyota and moved in behind it with lights and sirens from then on as it traveled northbound, and to try to make it safer for everyone traveling the highway.
A dark colored Yukon SUV, driven by the husband of the driver of the Toyota, was traveling behind and attempting to get other vehicles out of the way.
Deputy Constable Pope was at the wheel of the patrol unit, while Constable Tipton managed communications with other emergency personnel, dispatch and the driver of the Toyota. As the Toyota was approaching Timpson, Deputy Constable Pope traveled ahead into Timpson to stop traffic at the traffic light through town.
As the Toyota entered the Timpson city limits, it did so on the wrong side of the highway where U.S. Highways 59 and 84 meet.
“At that time we were able to get ahead and the light was green and stayed green, and at that point we let her get back in front of us,” said Constable Tipton.
The light being green decreased the potential for tragedy as the Toyota traveled at high speed through Timpson.
The constables got the man driving the SUV to finally back off and that reduced the number of vehicles involved leaving just the constables and the driver of the Toyota.
“We had him back off away from the runaway vehicle, that way it was just Constable Pope and I and the runaway vehicle at that point driving at that speed,” said Constable Tipton. “We wanted to eliminate as much hazard as we could.”
Once again as the runaway approached a municipality, Tenaha, Constable Pope accelerated over 100 mph to outrun the Toyota to the next stop light intersection due to concerns it could be red. Once again the light was green as the Toyota traveled through the intersection.
As the runaway route between Tenaha and Joaquin became clear of traffic, and the vehicle was reaching speeds over 100 mph,.
Constable Tipton remained in constant contact with Shelby County dispatch and requested information on travel speed and any other details be passed along to DeSoto Parish, Panola County and Texas Department of Public Safety.
Deputy Constable Pope maneuvered the patrol unit in front of the Toyota to allow the driver to hit the rear of the truck in attempts to slow down.
It wasn’t until the vehicles had passed through Tenaha, and the constables had maneuvered behind the vehicle again, that they would learn of a fact that would change everything. In addition to the driver, dispatch alerted the vehicle was occupied by three children.
“At that point the game plan changed, if we would have known the three small kids were in the vehicle at the time then I’m sure [we] would have just let her hit the patrol vehicle and tried to stop it right then,” said Tipton. “We would have basically just bit the bullet and let whatever happened happen for the safety of the children.”
After Tenaha, the vehicle speed was once again exceeding 100 mph. Now with the constables behind the vehicle again a new development came to light, there was an 18-wheeler ahead hauling a trailer load of saltwater.
“We continued to follow, keeping direct communication with the driver, coaching her through what to do and not do, and the Lord put a saltwater truck in front of us.”
While Constable Tipton was in direct contact with the driver of the Toyota, she was advised to engage her brakes as best she could before bumping the rear of the saltwater hauler.
It appeared minimal damage was taken by the vehicle after bumping the rear of the saltwater hauler. The driver then allowed her brakes to cool before bumping the truck again and maintaining contact with the trailer. Deputy Constable Pope then traveled up alongside the truck-tractor and spoke with its driver to give him instructions.
Through the actions of the constables and the truck driver, they were able to bring the frightening situation to a favorable conclusion.
“We just eased her right on over to the shoulder of the road,” said Constable Tipton.
As soon as everything was brought to a halt, the constables exited their vehicle and raced on foot to the Toyota.
“The first thing we did was get the children out of the car,”said Tipton. “We got the mother, and the children out of the car safely and nobody was injured. I can honestly say that the good Lord was watching over us.”
In addition Constable Tipton thanked the driver of the Tri-State truck tractor, DPS Trooper Taylor Buster, Shelby County Sheriff’s Department deputies, constable Roy Cheatwood, and anyone else involved who may not be mentioned here.

April 25, 2024 - The Primary run-off for Shelby County Sheriff and Shelby County Constable Precinct 3 will be held on Tuesday, May 28, 2024. Early voting will be at the Community House, 423 San Augustine Street in Center, Monday, May 20 through Friday, May 24, from 7am to 7pm each day.

At 10:44am CDT, severe thunderstorms were located along a line extending from Martinsville to near Etoile to 7 miles southeast of Huntington, moving east at 35 mph.
Hazard: 60 mph wind gusts and quarter size hail.

May 27, 2024 (Photo Album) - VFW Post 8904 hosted a Memorial Day Program at the Historic 1885 Courthouse on Monday, May 27, 2024, in honor of those who served and made the ultimate sacrifice while doing so.
Mary Roberts, VFW Post 8904 Emcee, welcomed everyone to the event and introduced David Mathis, First Baptist Church Center Minister of Worship and Education, to give the invocation.
The posting of the ceremonial rifle was then performed by VFW Members Gene Hutto and Robert Hall.
“The battle cross is a visible reminder of the fallen we honor here and across this country today. The helmet and dog tags signify those who died in the service of our country, their names must never be forgotten. The inverted rifle with bayonet signals a time for prayer and a tribute to our departed and missing comrades. The combat boots represent the final march of those who pay the ultimate price for the freedoms we enjoy today,” said Roberts.
Everyone present then recited the National Anthem, as led by Center Mayor Pro-Tem Leigh Porterfield, and this was then followed by the Pledge of Allegiance.
“This Memorial Day 2024 we come together to appreciate the freedoms that we enjoy as we honor the sacrifices that paid for those freedoms,” said Roberts.
Those in the audience with loved ones currently serving our country were invited to stand and three did so in response. Anyone with family members currently serving were then presented with a blue star banner.
Veterans who were in the audience were also invited to stand and be recognized, and many did.
The First Baptist Church Trio then performed “In Flanders Fields.”
Roberts then read aloud a letter from United States Senator John Cornyn: “Dear fellow Texans, each year on Memorial Day, we honor the brave men and women in our military who have paid the ultimate sacrifice in service to our nation. Our armed forces are sent to some of the most dangerous and distant parts of the world to preserve, protect, and defend our country. in values we hold dear.
“Today we reflect on the memories of soldiers, sailors, airmen, Marines, and post guardsmen who laid down their lives fighting for our liberties. Their selfless service and unwavering patriotism are a sovereign reminder that freedom is never free. As a son of a career Air Force officer, I know the decision to serve is not made by just one person, but by an entire family. While we honor the sacrifices made on the battlefield today, we must not forget the ones made here at home as well.
“This is a time to pay tribute to our fallen soldiers and their families who feel the pain of their loss today and every day. They're absences have left a hole that will never be filled. And I ask you to join me in thanking the loved ones of those heroes who have borne the heaviest burden of them all. On days like today, it is important we also reflect on how blessed we all are to call ourselves Americans. We are a strong, prosperous, and beautiful country, and we enjoy countless freedoms thanks to the valor and honor of those who bravely answered the call of duty on our behalf.
“I am forever grateful for their courage and loyalty to our nation. May God bless our fallen service members and their families, our veterans, current troops both home and overseas, and the next generations of soldiers, and may He continue to bless the United States of America.”
Roberts then shared that dating back to World War I, families who would hang what were called blue star banners in their windows, to signify they proudly have a family member on active duty. In the event that their loved one died during their service; the blue star would be replaced with a gold star.
“For those of you that are unfamiliar with military traits and traditions, a gold star family is a term we use to describe families who have lost a loved one who was serving in the military and died as a result of their active duty,” said Roberts. “The term comes from the service flag which was first used during World War I.”
A Gold Star family was then honored and Roberts welcomed James Lowe Jr. and his wife Cindy.
“The Lowe family is here to remember their son, U.S. Army Chief Foreign Warrant Officer II, Lucas Morris Lowe, who was killed on December 28, 2016, when the AH-64 Apache helicopter that he was piloting went down in Galveston Bay during a training flight with the Army National Guard,” said Roberts. “Lucas served 14 years of active duty and had previous deployments to Afghanistan for 11 months and to Iraq for 14 months. He was the father of three, with twins on the way at the time of his death. It's our honor that we present the Lowe family with this gold star banner in memory of their son, Chief Warrant Officer II, Lucas Morris Lowe. His service and sacrifice will never be forgotten by the Veterans of Foreign Wars. God bless.”
Roberts shared, the Disabled Veterans (DAV) is an organization created in 1920 by World War I veterans for disabled military veterans of the United States Armed Forces, that helps them and their families through various means. It is issued by a family charter by Congress in 1932, and it currently has over one million members.
The local DAV is located in Nacogdoches and serves a large area of East Texas and as with all service organizations, they are here to serve our veterans. One group they support when they can is first responders.
A special presentation from the DAV was then made with VFW member Richard Lundie filling in for the Nacogdoches representative. Receiving the donation from the DAV was John Clevenger, who is a veteran and detective with the Center Police Department and he received a ballistic vest.
Dr. Jerry Lynn McSwain, Felicia Thompson, Michele Clark and her daughter Rena then presented quilts of honor to Brad Taylor, Walter Thomas Jr., and Kevin Gratehouse.
As VFW Post 8904 and Auxiliary read names on the roll call of honor of those who paid the ultimate sacrifice, flowers were placed on the memorial wreath until it was filled.
Once the roll call was complete, and the wreath decorated, Leigh Porterfield then sang “Last Full Measure of Devotion.”
Dylan Roberts then sang “God Bless America,” which was followed by a moment of silence.
All in attendance then adjourned outside the courthouse for the playing of Taps and raising of the flags for the completion of the program.

On Friday Joaquin High School introduced and recognized 49 senior students of the graduating class of 2024 during commencement ceremonies. Valedictorian Shelby Freeman and Salutatorian Autumn Webb gave class commencement speeches and were among 49 graduate students who were recognized by the school.

In Texas this watch includes 6 counties.

This includes the cities of Carthage, Center, Hemphill, Lufkin, Nacogdoches, Pineland, and San Augustine.

May 23, 2024 - Early voting for the May 28 runoff started yesterday. Every day during early voting, we upload the total number of voters from the previous day to the Secretary of State's website. Those numbers are available for anyone to see, and you can also see the names of those who voted. Here is the link:

Once you click on the link, you will select May 28 Republican primary runoff and submit. In the left column, choose the day you want to see, and submit.
Scroll down to find Shelby County, and you will see the numbers. The column on the far right has voter details, and if you click on it, a spreadsheet will open with the names of all the voters for the day you have chosen.
May 24, 2024 - (Update): Shelby County Sheriff Chief Deputy Chad Hooper states a garbage truck broke a line as they were leaving the Sheriff's Department this morning after emptying a dumpster.
In response, the parking lot is roped off while the mess is cleaned up. The Sheriff's Department is open, and alternative parking will have to be used until the area is clear.
A viscous substance on some streets in Center is causing drivers to have difficulty and lose traction Friday, May 24, 2024.
According to the Center Police Department, sometime before 7:40am TxDOT was contacted and are getting en-route to assist in trying to clean up the apparent spill. It's been discovered on the end of San Augustine Street where it meets Hurst Street, Nacogdoches Street and on the square. It isn't limited to just these streets and could be located on others.
Driver's are encouraged to use caution while this situation is being resolved.
May 23, 2024 - The Texas Commission on Environmental Quality required the Choice public water system, 2100005 to issue a Boil Water Notice on May 20, 2024, to inform customers, individuals, or employees that due to conditions which occurred recently in the public water system, the water from this public water system was required to be boiled prior to use for drinking water or human consumption purposes.
The public water system has taken the necessary corrective actions to restore the quality of the water distributed by this public water system used for drinking water or human consumption purposes and has provided TCEQ with laboratory test results that indicate that the water no longer requires boiling prior to use as of 05/22/2024.

May 20, 2024 - Due to a loss of pressure due to repairing a leak, the Texas Commission on Environmental Quality has required the CHOICE Water system, ID# 2100005 to notify customers that were without water May 20, 2024 on CR 1066 and CR 1069 (anyone without water) to boil their water, prior to consumption (e.g., washing hands/face, brushing teeth, drinking, etc). Children, seniors, and persons with weakened immune systems are particularly vulnerable to harmful bacteria, and all customers should follow these directions.
To ensure destruction of all harmful bacteria and other microbes, water for drinking, cooking, and ice making should be boiled and cooled prior to use for drinking water or human consumption purposes. The water should be brought to a vigorous rolling boil and then boiled for two minutes.
In lieu of boiling, individuals may purchase bottled water or obtain water from some other suitable source for drinking water or human consumption purposes.
When it is no longer necessary to boil the water, the public water system officials will notify customers that the water is safe for drinking water or human consumption purposes.
Once the boil water notice is no longer in effect, the public water system will issue a notice to customers that rescinds the boil water notice in a manner similar to this notice.
Please share this information with all the other people who drink this water, especially those who may not have received this notice directly (for example, people in apartments, nursing homes, schools, and businesses). You can do this by posting this notice in a public place or distributing copies by hand or mail.
