Shelby County Launches Walk Across Texas! Program for Individuals, Businesses, Families, Community Teams

March 20, 2026 — The Texas A&M AgriLife Extension Service in Shelby County is excited to announce the launch of this year’s Walk Across Texas! A free 8-week physical activity challenge running April 6, 2026, through May 25, 2026. The program welcomes individuals, business teams, community teams, and families, including those involved in baseball, softball, and T-ball.

Did you know? Shelby County currently reports 41% adult obesity and 32% inactive adults — rates higher than the Texas state average. These numbers highlight an urgent need for action, and Walk Across Texas! offers an easy, engaging way for residents to take a step towards better health.

Walk Across Texas! encourages participants to increase their daily physical activity by working individually or in teams to reach 832 miles, the virtual distance across Texas.

“This year, our Walk Across Texas! program truly reaches every corner of the community,” said Feleshia L. Thompson, County Extension Agent. “Individuals, workplaces, families, friend groups, and now community organizations all have the opportunity to participate in a fun challenge that improves health and keeps us moving.”

Program Options

1. Individuals, Business Teams, and Community Teams

Participants may join on their own or form teams of up to eight people.

Community teams may include:

  • Churches
  • Civic organizations
  • Nonprofits
  • School staff groups
  • Neighborhood teams
  • Clubs and local associations

Workplace teams are also encouraged to join as a wellness initiative that boosts connection, morale, and overall, well-being.

Participants can log a wide range of physical activities—walking, running, cycling, workouts, sports, and more—through the Walk Across Texas! online portal, where mileage is tracked on a virtual map.

“Adding community teams expands participation and strengthens local partnerships,” Thompson said. “It’s a great way for groups to stay active together.”

2. Family Walk Across Texas! — Ballfield Edition

This family-centered option is designed especially for parents and children involved in baseball, softball, and T-ball.

Instead of sitting in the bleachers during practice, parents are encouraged to walk loops around the field, take laps on the track, or team up with other families for group walks. Youth can participate with short walking goals before or after practice.

“This version fits perfectly with the busy schedules of sports families,” Thompson shared. “Parents can stay active while cheering on their kids, and children see healthy habits modeled right in front of them.”

Special features include:

  • Weekly family walking challenges
  • Kid-friendly step or mileage goals
  • Options for entire youth teams or leagues to participate
  • A supportive environment for all ages and fitness levels

Program Dates: April 6, 2026 – May 25, 2026
