Paula Burns Askew, 61, of Tenaha, passed away Sunday, June 14, 2020, in Tenaha.
Visitation will be held from 6:00 p.m. to 8:00 p.m., Friday, June 19, 2020, at Watson & Sons Funeral Home in Center. Funeral service will be held at 2:00 p.m., Saturday, June 20, 2020, at Watson & Sons Chapel. Interment will follow at Oaklawn Memorial Park in Center.
Born October 16, 1958, in Cheyenne, Wyoming, Paula is the daughter of George Burns and Geneva Coleman Burns. She retired from Carthage UTMC as a ward clerk. Paula loved spending time with her grandkids and family. She was a member of Sardis Pentecostal Church.

Earl Ramey, 80, of Garrison, Texas passed away on June 14, 2020 in Garrison. He was born on October 24, 1939 in Tenaha, Texas to Alton Ramey, Sr. and Ida Mae Ross Ramey. A graveside service will be at 11:00 AM on Friday, June 19, 2020 at Old Home Cemetery in Tenaha, Texas with Bro. Billy Clayton officiating.
Many knew him as Billy Boy or Bill Boy. He grew up in Tenaha and met the love of his life, Joyce, in Garrison, Texas. They married on June 16th 1960 and went on to have five children. Earl had a love for working on cars and followed in his father’s footsteps when he became a mechanic. For twenty years, he worked for Proller Steel in Houston before moving back to Garrison to open his own repair shop. Earl was a big fan of Audi Murphy westerns and had a love for Hank Williams Sr country and western songs. He also loved to keep people around him laughing by telling jokes. Earl was a loving husband, father, grandfather, uncle, brother, and friend.

William Morris Jeffress, 90, of Gary, Texas passed away on June 13, 2020, surrounded by loved ones at his home. He was born on January 18, 1930, in the Murvaul Community, Panola County, to the late William Jewel “Buddy” Jeffress and Naomi Haynes Jeffress. Morris was a” jack of all trades”, he was a truck driver, welder, diesel mechanic and above all a servant of the Lord. He was a deacon of the Antelope Valley Baptist Church in Gillette, Wyoming until he moved back home to Texas, where he became a member of the First Baptist Church of Tenaha. He loved to hunt, fish and witness to others of God’s love.

Edward Applequist was born on June 12, 1945 in Ross, California to Martin and Louise Applequist. He died on June 10, 2020 at his residence in Center, Texas.
He graduated with a Bachelor of Science degree in Forestry from Northern Arizona University in Flagstaff, Arizona in 1967. After which he was drafted into the U. S. Army and served in Vietnam. Upon his return he started working as a forester for the Texas Forest Service in Lufkin, Texas. In 1973 he moved a branch of that office to Center, Texas. He worked the remainder of his life as a self employed Consulting Forester.

W.N. Bill Hairgrove, 75, of Timpson, passed away Wednesday, June 10, 2020, in Timpson.
Visitation will be held from 5pm to 7pm, Thursday, June 11, 2020, at Watson & Sons Funeral Home in Center. Funeral service will be held at 10am, Friday, June 12, 2020, at Watson & Sons Chapel with Bro. Dock Lazarine officiating. Interment will follow at Buena Vista Cemetery in Timpson.
Mr. Hairgrove was born December 14, 1944, in Center, to W.N. Hairgrove and Pearl Burns Hairgrove. He was a member of the PRCA from 1979 to 1983, LRA from 1964 to 1979, and USTRC from 1999 to present. Mr. Hairgrove was also a member of Timpson Masonic Lodge #437 and Buena Vista Missionary Baptist Church in Timpson.

Iva Nell Brown, 98, of Center, passed away Tuesday, June 9, 2020, in Center.

Mrs. Brown was born January 16, 1922, in Shelby County, to Curtis Marian Pate and Lottie Cornelia Bullard Pate. She enjoyed writing and was a published poet. Her hobbies also included cooking, sewing, and reading. Mrs. Brown loved Jesus more than anything, then her family, which included friends. She was born again at the age of twelve years and led her daddy to the Lord. Mrs. Brown loved memorizing the Bible and was a member of Hillcrest Baptist Church, where she taught Sunday school. A wonderful mother, wife, grandmother, and great grandmother, she will be greatly missed on this earth. She never forgot birthdays, anniversaries, or thank you, get well, or thinking of you cards.

Ethel Elaine Billingsley Amos, 87, of Timpson, Texas entered Heaven’s Gates on Sunday, June 7, 2020. We imagine her running through those gates without her wheelchair and with both arms raised high. She was born in Timpson, Texas on December 27, 1932, and graduated from Timpson High School in 1950. Elaine married her high school sweetheart, Donald Amos, on June 25, 1950, and will celebrate their 70th year of marriage together. They will have never missed an anniversary apart.
Whether it was the family run grocery store, Amos Foods, or the Ace Hardware store they opened in Timpson, Elaine loved to help run all the business adventures in their lifetime. She loved opening “her side of the store” filling it with unique gifts for any occasion. After selling their hardware store, she continued working at Bussey Drug until her retirement. Her pastimes were painting, playing the piano, traveling, and the love for her family. She had a matter of fact approach and honesty that everyone loved and admired. Her children, grandchildren, and great grandchildren were her pride and joy, telling about their accomplishments to anyone who would listen.
A Lifetime member of Woodland Christian Church, on Sundays past, you could find her at the piano while her love Don led the song service.
Elaine was proceeded in this life by her loving husband, Donald E. Amos. Her parents, Travis and Oris Billingsley; a beloved Grandson, Don Travis Harris; Sister, Edith Cross and Brother, Edgar Billingsley.

Billy L. Funderburk, 75, left this world to rest safely in the arms of Jesus on Sunday, June 7, 2020 in Lake Charles, Louisiana. Bill was born July 16,1944 in Corpus Christi, Texas to James and Diana (Kennedy) Funderburk.
A Memorial Service will be held at First Baptist Church in Center at 11am on Saturday, June 27th.
Bill accepted Jesus as his Lord and Savior when he was seven years old and committed the rest of his life in service to God.
His father worked for Mobile Pipeline for many years and they moved a lot in Bill’s 18 years at home, so he had no problem meeting people and making friends quickly.
After graduating High School in Kermit, Texas, Bill went to Hardin Simmons University in Abilene, majoring in Music Education. Upon graduating from HSU, he completed a Master’s Degree in Music Performance from Eastern Kentucky University, Lexington, Kentucky.
He married the love of his life, Joyce Porter Funderburk, on August 29, 1964 at Lamar Street Baptist Church, Sweetwater, Texas.
He served in the United States Army as a 1st Lieutenant during the Vietnam war era. He served as Commander of the 543rd Military Police Company in Ft. Knox, Kentucky until his discharge in 1971.
Bill was called by God to the ministry and for the next 50 years, served as Minister of Music in several Baptist churches in Texas, Kentucky, Tennessee, and Wyoming. The last full time position was at First Baptist Church, Center, Texas, where he and Joyce served for 15 years.
Bill was a very kind spirit with a smile for everyone. He had a beautiful singing voice and loved to play his trumpet and guitar in the privacy of his home and during worship services.

Bob was born on March 9, 1941 in Raleigh, NC to Hazel and Bertie Mae Tucker. On January 30, 1980, he married Virginia Gail (Cox)Tucker. They each brought three children into this family unison.
Bob grew up in the masonry and brick business. Bob came from a big family of brick masons. He was the baby of his bunch. He quickly took lead on the refractory work around the country and even on foreign soils. The “Tucker boys” were known to be the ones to call around the country. He built brick kilns or kilns of any type.
He loved to fish. Saltwater fishing was something he loved to do but he also loved to bass fish and would fish bass tournaments throughout the year. “Always in search of the BIG ONE”.
He liked to scratch lottery tickets, also “in search of the BIG ONE.”
He also loved to work in his shop. The problems of the world were settled in that shop. He could fix anything, from metal work to brick, motor rebuilds and bodywork to things as simple as birdhouses. He loved it all but most of all he loved the fellowship we all shared there.

Robert Wayne Belrose Sr., 89, of Center, TX passed away peacefully on Thursday, May 28, 2020.
Robert was born in Center, TX on May 22, 1931 to Cecil Emmitt Belrose and Vena Mae (Willoughby) Belrose.
One of four sons, Robert grew up a true Texan with a deep appreciation for family, good southern values, and God. Robert was lucky enough to have spent 60 years married to the love of his life, Martha Ruth (Green) Belrose, whom he loved until the day he joined her in heaven. Robert proudly retired from Texaco after a fulfilling career to return to school to be a gunsmith in his later years. His love of fabrication and collecting all types of firearms was something he often talked about; Robert even taught his grandkids about his love of guns, spending time with each of them teaching them to shoot. Over the course of his 89 years, Robert spent many days and weekends hunting for treasures and searching flea markets for everything from costume jewelry for Martha to older firearms in need of his loving attention. As it might be expected, Robert also loved hunting and spending time outdoors. Pine Grove Nursing Home was Robert’s home in his last few years, and the nurses and residents loved Robert for all his good humor and funny antics. As he got older, a deep love for gardening and flower gardens developed and he spent many happy hours working in the yard and flower boxes with his favorite great-niece Amy. During his time at Pine Grove, Robert looked forward to the visits he got from family; Jimmy, Kim and Amy especially were frequent and welcome visitors. A loving husband, proud father and devoted grandfather, Robert filled many roles over the course of his life; it didn’t matter if you called him Dad, Grandpa, Uncle Robert, or just Robert- he treated everyone he met as an equal and with love and respect. While many will miss Robert, all those who knew him well know that he is truly at peace having joined his family waiting for him in heaven. It would seem Robert has managed to find his 5 gallons of gas to get home at last.

Weldon “Tuffy” Webb, 74, of San Leon, passed away Sunday, May 24, 2020, in Webster.
Graveside service was held at 2:30 p.m., Wednesday, May 27, 2020, at Corinth Cemetery in Timpson with Mid Johnson officiating.
Mr. Webb was born October 29, 1945, in Center, to Thatchell H. Webb and Omie Loyce Oliver Webb. He was a carpenter for most of his life. He loved music and was a member of San Leon Baptist Church.

Troy Z. Parrish, 80, of Tenaha, Texas passed away on May 27, 2020 surrounded by loved ones in Tenaha, Texas. He was born on December 19, 1939, in Center, Texas, to Early Zephrine Parrish and Ara Norma (Koonce) Parrish. Funeral service will be held at 11AM on Monday, June 1, 2020 at Mangum Funeral Home, Center, Texas. Interment will follow at Union Cemetery, Tenaha, Texas.
Visitation will be held Sunday, May 31, 2020 from 5-7PM at Mangum Funeral Home, Center, Texas.
Troy was raised in Tenaha, Texas. He graduated Tenaha High School Class of 1957. Troy was an avid basketball player in school, being awarded many trophies over the years. He entered the workforce immediately after graduation doing pipeline construction. Troy met the love of his life, Louann, and the two were married over 20 years before her passing. Together they raised a beautiful family. Troy had a passion for being a professional dozer operator. His passion led to his nationally renowned reputation in the pipeline industry. People all over the world sought, Troy, for his skill and expertise. He was a very hardworking entrepreneur, owning many businesses and seeking to make Tenaha a better place while doing so. Although he formally retired from the pipeline industry in 2015, he still had his personal business TZP which he owned and operated until he absolutely could not. Another favorite place in Tenaha he owned was the Snack Shack for over 20 years. He gave his best in absolutely everything he did. Troy loved his family and enjoyed every moment spent with them. He also enjoyed watching the Dallas Cowboys play football. Most of all Troy loved the Lord and was a member of First Baptist Church Tenaha.

Sue Ann Gunnels Noble, 69, of Shelbyville, passed away Tuesday, May 26, 2020, in Shelbyville.
Visitation will be held from 5:00 p.m. to 7:00 p.m., Friday, May 29, 2020, at Watson & Sons Funeral Home in Center. Funeral service will be held at 2:00 p.m., Saturday, May 30, 2020, at Watson & Sons Chapel with Bro. Jim Moss, Bro. Chris Collins, Bro. Lloyd Scott, and Bro. Chuck Gilbert officiating. Interment will follow at Spann’s Chapel Cemetery.
Born September 19, 1950, in Center, Sue is the daughter of the late Robert Elton Gunnels and Gay Nell Jones Gunnels.
Mrs. Sue Ann Noble was a devout Christian. She loved her Lord, her children, grandchildren, daughter-in-laws, son-in-law, and most of all her spouse of 52 years, Don Noble.
Her life consisted of her family and her ministry. God used her in serving others for over 43 years teaching children’s ministry serving at: Neuville Baptist Church, Neuville, Texas; First Baptist Alamo, Rio Grande Valley, Texas; Park View Baptist, Plainview, Texas; Good Exchange Baptist, McLeod, Texas; Trinity Baptist, Nacogdoches, Texas, and; Spann’s Chapel Baptist, Center, Texas. Her joy and passion was teaching and leading children to Christ.
Every morning she enjoyed sitting in her favorite chair watching the birds and squirrels at her bird feeders and feeding her favorite dog, CoCo, Pupperoni dog snacks, all while reading through her emails from family and friends from the day before. She lived by the saying “tomorrow may never come.” She will be missed dearly by her family and friends and her memory will last forever in our hearts.

Tommy Ray West, 89, of Center, Texas passed away on May 15, 2020 in Center, Texas. Born November 27 1930, in Zwolle, Louisiana, Tommy is the son of the late Tom West and Ida Meshell West. A memorial service will be held at 11AM on Saturday, May 30, 2020 in sanctuary of First Baptist Church of Center.
Tommy Ray West was born on a farm outside of Zwolle, Louisiana. He spent most of his life in Zwolle where he graduated from high school in 1948. He loved playing baseball and basketball, and played both for Zwolle High School. Immediately after graduation, he enlisted in the US Air Force. He was sent to Germany just after WWII had ended and his enlistment was for two years. Because of the situation in Europe at the time, his enlistment was extended two more years. He was stationed in Rhein Main, Germany where they were carrying out what they called “The Berlin Air Lift”. This was a program in which food was being flown into the people there, because they had no food available.
He was assigned to the finance office during this time and the work there defined his life’s work as an accountant. He returned to the states and discharged from the Air Force in about 1952. Upon his discharge, he immediately enrolled in Northwestern State College and in the spring of 1953, he met Alice Zenter. In January, 1955, after he graduated, they were married.
Upon graduation, he was hired by Atlas Doors and worked there for six years. During this time, the company was sold and became E.L. Bruce. In 1961, he moved his family to Louisiana for nine years. E.L. Bruce called him to return to Center to work for them again. He remained there until his retirement in 1993. He worked for the company for a total of 39 years.

Leon Parrott, 83, of Center, Texas passed away on May 25, 2020 in Nacogdoches, Texas. Born August 30, 1936, in Stroud, Oklahoma, Leon is the son of the late Maurice Parrott and Colleda (Williams) Parrott. His wishes were to be cremated and no service will be held.
Leon retired from Boiler Room Engineer at Boeing Aircraft. He was for sure a simple man. Simple the way the Ten Commandments are simple. The way the truth is simple. He was an excellent skeet shooter and he loved doing it. Leon was soft-spoken, so humble, and always ready to manufacture some fun. He lived with a n innocent strength and a sweet freedom. Leon liberated, never holding back in the unmistakable affection he felt for so many people. He love Wichita Kansas but was happy to move to Center, Texas. He worked for and, in time, led causes given over to making his hometown an ever better place to live, serving on many boards, and being a part of many community organizations. In fact, in the dwindling dreams of his last three years, Leon Parrott, stood forthright with his family and friends, no attempt whatsoever to hide the slow progress of his affliction. But the old Leon sparkled through, warming and lighting the room, even as darkness walked closer. At the end, his laughter, the only speech that mattered.
