July 2, 2018 - During an open house for the official opening of the World War I exhibit at the Shelby County Museum, Christine Mahan was the guest of honor and was recognized for her years of faithful and dedicated service to the museum.
Larry Hume, VFW Post 8904 Quartermaster, helped the Shelby County Historical Society (SCHS) with the setup of the World War I display and was designated to read a card from the museum volunteers, "A sincere thank you is not sufficient to tell you how much we appreciate your many years of service to this museum. Your dedication to Shelby County history has flourished because of your many hours of work and research. You will be highly missed and come back any time, to help any time!"
Mahan, a 26-year volunteer at the museum, said, "I just really appreciate the honor. But, you know when I moved here in 1990 there were two things I wanted to do. One of them was to work at the museum and the other one was to take art from Woodrow Foster and I got to do both of those. It took a while but anyways once I started here there was no looking back. There was always something to do and the thing that I enjoyed more than anything else was helping people with their genealogy and we do have a rich history here in Shelby County and I love to see people take advantage of it."
The open house was for the new display setup for the 100th anniversary of the end of World War I which is November 11th of this year. The museum has setup a display recognizing all Shelby County veterans who served in World War I or veterans who were not from Shelby County but they are now buried in Shelby County. In total, the display represents 887 veterans of World War I.
Attendees look over the names of the veterans recognized in the museum's new World War I exhibit.
Hume said on behalf of the VFW Post 8904 and the auxiliary, "We are going to have a program on November 11th, we realize its a Sunday, but still its November 11th and you only get a chance to do 100 years one time. We are going to have it in the Shelby County Historic Courthouse at 1pm. Let everybody go to church, then come back, we hope you all come." He also encouraged everyone to bring some young people and let them know what Veteran's Day is all about.
The museum is open Monday through Friday from 1pm until 4pm. Come find your World War I family member.

June 28, 2018 - Creature Teacher will be at the Fannie Brown Booth Library Thursday, June 28th for the fourth program of the 2018 Summer Reading/Learning Program. She will present her program for ages 4-8 years at 10:30 a.m. and at 2:00 p.m. for the Tweens (ages 9-13).

June 26, 2018 - The Relay For Life of Shelby County wants to thank everyone who contributed, organized, and/or participated in this year's Relay.
Included in the festivities was a tree dedication 'In Honor of all Shelby County Cancer Survivors.' It is planted in front of the Windham Civic Center. So the next time you are there, make sure to stop and see the live oak tree planted in their honor. It is a living symbol of their strength, courage, and perseverance.
Through the efforts of all involved we were able to raise over $47,500 this year and over 1 million in the past 13 years. We are proud to live in a county that works so hard in the fight against cancer. Throughout the many years of Relay I know that we have made a difference in people's lives. The money we have raised has resulted in new drug and treatment protocols that have resulted in people celebrating more birthdays, attending graduations, seeing their children get married, and saying "hello, I love you" to their grandchildren. We did that together and that is a legacy to be proud of!

June 26, 2018 (More Photos - Album1, Album2) - Nearly $50,000 was raised at the 13th Annual Relay for Life on June 2, 2018 bringing the grand total to over 1 million dollars which has been raised for cancer research.
Becky Parfait who is co-chair for the event was honored to receive the official proclamation for the 2018 Relay for Life which was read by her co-chairperson Becky Grant.
Survivors, caregivers, family, and friends were entertained by the Center ISD theater troop, "Elephants in the Room," who are lead by their teacher Watlington who added to the excitement of the evening as the master of ceremonies.
Proclamation
Whereas, Relay for Life is the signature activity of the American Cancer Society and celebrates cancer survivors and caregivers, remembers loved ones lost to the disease, and empowers individuals and communities to fight back against cancer, and
Whereas, this year the Relay for Life of Shelby County celebrates thirteen years of fighting against cancer and suporting the American Cancer Society's mission of saving lives and creating a world with less cancer; and
Whereas, Relay for Life, while raising much needed money for cancer research, also continues to fight for lifesaving laws to increase the federal research funding, reduce tobacco use, raise the awareness of cancer prevention, early detection, treatment, and patient support, and
Whereas, we, here in Shelby County are fortunate to have dedicated and compassionate citizens who are willing to work and support the American Cancer Society in their fight, and
Now, therefore, be it resolved, that I, Allison Harbison, County Judge of Shelby County, Texas recognize all the many volunteers and participants from area families, corporations, churches, and civic groups and does hereby proclaim June 2, 2018 as "Cancer Awareness Day"
June 22, 2018 - VFW Post 8904 is looking for relatives or descendants of US Army World War I Veteran Ellis Luther Reaves. Mr. Reaves passed on February 21, 1985 and is buried in the Campti Methodist Cemetery.

June 21, 2018 - The Shelby County Cancer Fund (SCCF) is hosting "Trunk Treasures" June 23, 2018 from 9am until 2pm on the downtown Center Square. Put your gently used junk in your trunk and join us for a community garage sale.
- ‘Trunk Treasures’ is a community sale for your gently used items (treasures!!!) out of your trunk, truck bed, van or trailer.
- Sale starts at 9:00am, but participants may leave whenever they wish.
- There is a $40 charge per vehicle if you pre-register a spot. $50/vehicle if you decide to join us the day of! There will also be a spot set up for those would like to just drop off and donate their treasures!
- Vendors may choose what to do with their earnings - we appreciate any and every donation. We would love for our county to be involved in helping us raise money for this great cause!!

The Shelby County Cancer Fund, a non-profit organization, is a group of volunteers made up of survivors, caretakers, and others who want to give back to our community. Many have been through treatments as a patient or a caretaker and we know the struggle. We are compassionate about reaching out to others who are facing the same ordeal.
The organizations mission is, although we cannot take away all the pain, we can show love through the trying times to hopefully encourage and strengthen someone's faith in God and others.
All donations are appreciated and also tax deductible, made payable to Shelby County Cancer Fund, P.O. Box 283, Shelbyville, Texas 75973.

June 20, 2018 - Timpson Frontier Days Pony Express traveled through Shelby County and surrounding areas inviting everyone far and wide to the 2018 Frontier Days on the Timpson city square.
The Pony Express envoy traveled through the area on June 11-12. Each city visited included Garrison, Joaquin, Center, Timpson, Tenaha, Mt. Enterprise, Gary and Carthage.
Timpson Area Chamber of Commerce was represented by Paul Smith, TACC Chamber President, and Marilyn Corder, Frontier Days Event Coordinator. They accompanied Pony Express Riders Danny Dixon and his daughter Sarah to each of the cities being invited along with their horses "Pepper" and "Lena."
This year will be the 56th year of Timpson Frontier Days starting July 5th and running through July 8th.

June 21, 2018 - It's not too late to be a vendor at the 2018 East Texas What-A-Melon Festival which is coming to downtown Center July 12-14th!
The Annual What-A-Melon Festival draws thousands of visitors to enjoy carnival rides, games, contests including ‘The Biggest Watermelon Contest’, live music and entertainment including Reed Barton Music and Zach Mason & the Jars, the Pet Contest and the Miss East Texas What-A-Melon Pageant. This is a fun, family-oriented good ol’time!
Booth space is $125 and includes a 10' x 10' canopy-covered space with an electric plug.
