May 16, 2018 - Pine Grove Nursing Home invites the community to come celebrate Wednesday, May 16th at 2pm with Minnie and Mickey Mouse for Nursing Home Week. Kids are welcome to come out for photos with them.
May 15, 2018 - Minnie Jewel Richards Hawkins is a 1948 graduate of C. H. Daniels. Just think 70 years ago she was all smiles waiting to march across the stage and receive her diploma with hopes of starting on a higher education degree from Prairie View College in Prairie View, Texas, where she had been accepted. She finished in 1952 and became a teacher in the Houston area. Dr. Charles Tatum who was her classmate also went to Prairie View where he received several degrees and then returned there to teach geography for several years. He went on to receive his doctoral degree and has taught in other institutions and traveled worldwide. He and Minnie have been lifelong friends and talk regularly on the phone. They both have been supportive of the Daniels Alumni for many years. Minnie’s family lived across the street from the Daniels campus and owned much property near the school. She has submitted many memories about the school that occurred during her time there. The first and only School newspaper was printed while she was there, called The Danielette. It was interesting to read some of the articles written.
In August 1984, the Daniels High classes of 47-50 held their reunion at the San Augustine Inn. Minnie and several of her classmates, including my mother, Portia Kindle Garrett, were on the planning committee. Meetings were held in Houston and in Center. The reunion was well attended by ex-students and teachers. It was perhaps the beginning of the school reunions for Daniels alumni. During this time the classes presented a donation of $500 to Mr. James Campbell for the Shelby County College Center Fund (for a local branch of Panola Junior College in Center). Many of the alumni and their descendants have attended the college in the past years. We give accolades to Minnie Jewel for keeping the legacy alive for Daniels School.
May 14, 2018 - Pine Grove hosted a proclamation signing on Monday, May 14, 2018 to recognize this week, May 13 through May 19, as National Nursing Home Week. The proclamation was signed by City of Center Mayor David Chadwick.
Proclamation:
Whereas we honor and respect our elders and citizens of any age with physical or intellectual disabilities who reside in skilled nursing care centers in Center, Texas; and,
Whereas skilled nursing care centers throughout our area are holding events in observance of National Nursing Home Week, May 13 to 19, 2018, using this year's theme of "Celebrating Life's Stories," and,
Whereas I urge all citizens to visit a loved one, family member or friend residing in any care setting and offer a kind word, a personal touch, and spend time participating in various activities to unite those from all walks of life in need of our continuing love and support; and,
Whereas my administration is committed to quality health care, we take this moment to embrace the essence of the theme "Celebrating Life's Stories." Let's join all residents, patients, caregivers, nurses, other staff, volunteers and visitors in celebrating their special week; and,
Therefore, do I, David Chadwick, as Mayor of Center, Texas declare the week of May 13 to 19, 2018, as National Nursing Home Week, a week to honor both our vulnerable citizens who receive care and the dedicated ones giving care.
In witness thereof, I have thereunto set my hand and caused the seal of the City of Center to be affixed this 14th day of May, 2018.
May 12, 2018 - The 2nd Saturday in May is when Mail Carriers try to Stamp Out Hunger by collecting non-perishable donations in a bag by your mailbox. Saturday, May 12th is the day this year and the National Assocation of Letter Carriers (NALC) asks everyone to "Help us, Help Someone." The bags will be picked up and delivered to the local food bank. This is the 26th Annual Letter Carriers' Food Drive.
May 11, 2018 - As we continue to recognize the 50-year anniversary closing of Daniels High, it is time to recognize some of the most fantastic teachers who had classes in the buildings. They, both living and those who have passed on, will always be remembered as ‘favorite’ teachers. Many students of Daniels High can remember certain teachers because they helped them along the way. There are a few students who will opt to forget some of them because they felt they did not put forth a great effort to cooperate with them, and perhaps received a bad grade. Oh well, so is life. Again, accept this invite to read about some of the teacher facts on the early days of the school through the 1960’s in Dr. Charles Tatum’s books, “SHELBY COUNTY: In the East Texas Hills’ published in 1984 and ‘Dew Drops on the Pine Needles’ Volume 1 Education in Shelby County”, published in 2007. There are still a few remaining and you can find them in the Public Libraries. These facts will keep the legacy of the Daniels School alive.
May 10, 2018 - An observance was held in honor of the 73rd Anniversary of Victory in Europe (VE) at the Veterans Memorial, Historic Courthouse, Center Square, Center, Texas on Tuesday, May 8. Opening prayer given by Post Chaplain Cynthia Islas followed by the Pledge of Allegiance by all in attendance. Significance of the day given by Post Quartermaster Larry Hume. Names of 66 Shelby County Veterans who died in the European Theater or are still missing in action were read. Memorial Wreath placed by Post Sr. Vice Commander Newton Johnson, Jr., followed by the playing of Taps.
May 10, 2018 - Esther Small of Logansport, formerly of Beaver Falls, Pennsylvania, recently celebrated her 100th birthday at the Joaquin Senior Center, where she is, of course, the oldest person. Approximately 60 people were in attendance, including the former mayor of Logansport, Catherine Freeman, and the current mayor of Joaquin, Pat Gray (second picture). Her actual birthday was May 8.

"My Sister, Myself" to tour universities following roadblock donations
New members added 2017-2018
May 10, 2018 - Members of 'My Sister, Myself' at Center Middle School wish to thank the community for their donations during the recent roadblock. Thanks to your generosity, the girls and their sponsors have planned a weekend trip to Houston where they will be touring three universities. 'My Sister, Myself' is an organization created out of a need to see young girls empowered as future leaders of the community.

May 9, 2018 - The Fannie Brown Booth Library and the members of the Friends of the Library officers would like to thank the community for its generous support of the Library Book Sale held at the end of April. The success of the book sale was due to the work of all involved. This includes the community members who purchased books, volunteers who worked, before, after and at the sale, and those who gave special monetary donations and book donations.
The library would like to give special recognition and appreciation for the many hours of planning and preparation by all the members of the Friends of the Library group and to Coach Harrison and his CHS basketball players. You are truly an asset to the library.

May 9, 2018 - Anissa Jackson, with the Panola Nursing program, was the guest speaker for the combined meeting of Delta Gamma and Epsilon Iota in April. Members toured the simulation lab and learned about the extensive training presented at Panola.
Delta Gamma covers Shelby, San Augustine, and Sabine counties and Epsilon Iota covers Panola county. Both are local chapters of the Delta Kappa Gamma Society International of key women educators.
