June 11, 2024 - Framed copies of resolutions recently passed by the Timpson City Council and the Timpson Area Genealogical and Heritage Society were presented to Timpson native Scotty Rhodes in a brief ceremony at the Garrison Nursing Home on Thursday. Mayor Debra Smith presented the city's proclamation to Rhodes and Precinct 5 Justice of the Peace Tracy Broadway presented the one from TAGHS.

Mayor Smith and Judge Broadway shared the proclamations with those in attendance with Smith saying in part “the City of Timpson does hereby recognize Scotty Rhodes as a person of great value to our city and whose contributions to the preservation of our history contribute significantly to our general welfare.” In reading the TAGHS proclamation Judge Broadway said “this certificate is presented in recognition of your outstanding and lifelong community service to the preservation of our unique town history,”

Born as the only child of Timpson residents Rev. Bob and Mathilde Rhodes in 1946, Scotty Rhodes attended first through twelfth grades in TISD, graduating in 1965. Rhodes possesses a truly photographic memory and can recall the last 75 years of Timpson's citizenry and history with stunning clarity. Though physical disabilities have rendered him unable to leave his bed without assistance, Rhodes has an active social medial presence and following. His daily Facebook posts featuring recollections and comments on people and events from his life are awaited by his large group of friends and followers. As the City of Timpson proclamation stated, “his encyclopedic memory of Timpson's people, places, and events constitute a priceless and irreplaceable repository of our city's history spanning three-quarters of a century.”

After the presentation, those in attendance, which in addition to Mayor Smith and Judge Broadway, included Paul Smith, Shannon and Judy Ramsey, LouNell Billingsley, Pat Crawford, and Tad Bailey, shared memories and laughter with Rhodes.

June 7, 2024 - The Summer Reading/Discovery Program at the Fannie Brown Booth Library got off to a great start this morning. The summer program theme is "Adventure Begins at Your Library," and our Library theme is "FBBL Camp Read S'More."

We had a wonderful program presented by Justin Carpenter, biologist with Texas Parks and Wildlife. Mr. Carpenter spoke about "how to have a good camping experience." He also brought hides and skulls of animals found in East Texas and talked about the interesting facts of each one.

The Summer Reading/Discovery Programs are on Thursdays at 10:30 a.m. (except July 4th) and is sponsored by the Center Noon Lions Club.

The Library will have different programs for all ages Tuesday through Friday each week through July 19th. For more information, call the Library at 936-598-5522.

June 6, 2024 - VFW Post 8904 gathered at the Shelby County Memorial on Thursday, June 6, 2024, in remembrance of D-Day on its 80th anniversary and American and Allied troops.

Richard Lundie, Post Commander, welcomed everyone to the program and offered an opening prayer. The group then recited the Pledge of Allegiance to the American Flag.

“We are here today to honor the 80th anniversary of one of the most important dates of our history, commonly known as D-Day, codename Operation Overlord. D-Day was the turning point of World War II,” said Lundie. “June 6, 1944, saw the start of the largest air, land, and sea operation in our military history. On December 6, 1943, President Roosevelt appointed General Dwight D. Eisenhower as commander of the Cross Channel Operations. On D-Day, The Allied landed around 156,000 troops, of which 73,000 were American.

“It is hard to conceive the epic scope of this decisive battle that foreshadowed the end of Hitler's dream of Nazi domination, Overlord was the largest air, land, and sea operation undertaken before or since June 6, 1944. The landing included over 5,000 ships, 11,000 aircrafts, and over 150,000 servicemen.”

Lundie described the mindset of troops as they reached their objective on D-Day after years of meticulous and seemingly endless training, and planning it all came down to the boat ramp goes down, then you jump, swim, run, or crawl to the cliff.

“Many of our first young men, mostly not yet 20 years old, entered the surf carrying 80 pounds of equipment. They faced over 200 yards of beach before reaching the first natural feature for protection. Blanketed by small arm fire and blanketed by artillery, they found there self in hell,” said Lundie.

When it was over, the Allied force had suffered over 10,000 casualties. Lundie gave statistics stating that more than 4,000 were dead, yet somehow, due to planning and preparation and due to valor and sacrifices of the Allied forces, Europe was breached. Lundie explained there is no official casualty figure for D-Day, but the total Allied casualty estimate on D-Day was over 10,000 with the U .S. forces losing over 6,600 men.

“Today we take time to reflect on that which took place on the beach of Normandy and appreciate the sacrifice made by so many. Those beaches was codenamed Utah, Omaha, Gold, Juno, and Sword,” said Lundie.

Placing the memorial wreath on behalf of the VFW Post in honor of those who fought and gave their lives on June 6, 1944 and the days that followed was Maddox Gima.

As a final tribute, Taps was played as presented by Past-Post-Commander Gene Hutto.

June 4, 2024 - Shelby County Outreach Ministries is a nonprofit organization that has been serving our community for over 27 years. Our mission is to “Feed the Hungry and to Assist the Needy.” Our Motto is “Striving to be the Hands and Heart of Christ.” We have four programs that do that and so much more.

Our Helping Hands Outreach provides emergency food boxes, client assistance with utilities, emergency medical and dental treatment, emergency lodging and many other miscellaneous needs. We have two senior feeding programs that provide meals for senior citizens 60 and older. Our seniors receive five meals a week and a special food box monthly for the ones who need the extra food. We also call our seniors citizens in our feeding programs three times a week to perform a wellness check. The Unique Boutique is our resale shop that helps to fund our different ministries.

The old saying is true, “It takes a village to raise a child” and it is also said that it takes partnerships to help those who are in need.

Statistics show that one in seven adults, not excluding one in five children, are struggling with food insecurity meaning that they do not know where their next meal will come from. 85% of the seniors we serve are surviving on 800.00 or less monthly.

With the rising cost of food and overall inflation we are seeing many more people in need of our help.
June has been deemed Hunger Awareness Month in Shelby County.

We are issuing around 400 food boxes monthly. We have gained 118 new clients since January.

With that being said, we are in need of your help. Due to so many in need and the rising cost of food we are starting a campaign called “Feed My Sheep.”

HOW TO HELP?

  • Different businesses will have donation jars and empty food boxes that need donations of canned foods.
  • Donations of canned food as well as monetary donations can be dropped off at Shelby County Outreach Ministries.
  • Donations can also be mailed to Shelby County Outreach Ministries P.O. Box 1029, Center Tx 75935.

Call 936-598-4990 for more information.

Together we can feed the hungry and assist the needy. Thank you and may God continue to bless Shelby County.

June 4, 2024 - Thank you to those who made our fundraiser a success: Brookshire Brothers, H&S Discount Food, K&L Contractors Inc, John Holloway, all of those who gave donations, and all of those who helped prepare the burger plates. Without your support and the support of the community, our success would not be possible. Thank you.

June 3, 2024 - Center Garden Club is Celebrating National Garden Clubs National Garden Week at Farmer State Bank Monday, June 3, 2024.

The club has placed a plant display at the Farmer's State Bank branch located on the Center square. The display will remain throughout the week until June 7.

May 30, 2024 - Shelby County outreach Ministries (SCOM) Food Pantry received a donation from The Lily Farm on May 17, 1014, in the amount of $2,630.

Sherry Harding, SCOM Executive Director; Josh Crawford, SCOM Administrative Assistant; and Roy Blackshear were present to receive the check from Mark Carpenter on behalf of the organization.

“Every year for Mother's Day, we've been doing this for maybe seven years now,” said Carpenter. “I just give a bunch of stuff away from the farm, as raffles on Mother's Day and it's in honor kind of, of my mom. My mom's one of the most giving people that I've ever known in my life and so I do it to honor her. She's still alive and that's why I do it, I want to do it while she's alive.”

Carpenter explained that every year a different charity has been chosen to receive the benefit of the Lily Farm fundraiser. Past recipients have been the Shelby County Children’s Advocacy Center, Meals-on-Wheels, and mental health among others.

With the cost of food continuing to be so high, Carpenter said that he and his wife thought it would be beneficial to contribute to SCOM to assist with those in the greatest need of food assistance. Even though there may be some that abuse such assistance he realizes the majority really are in need.

“The bulk of the people there, they don’t necessarily want to be going there, but they need help,” said Carpenter. “I felt pretty passionately this year this would be a really good cause to help people out, and this was the most money we’ve ever raised.”

Carpenter said this was made possible through the generous support of people from within and outside of Shelby County.

“This is something we’re real proud of,” said Carpenter.

Sherry Harding stated the organization has gained 70 new families since January. This is an enormous increase in such a short period of time and it shows how much of an impact the economy is having on people everywhere.

“We’re hitting like 400 at least every month in food boxes, and then the seniors we’re feeding over at the Senior Nutrition Site,” said Harding. “When you have these people living on limited income, 88% of our seniors we serve are living on $800 or less a month. A pretty good margin of those living under $600 or less, also. Everything is such a blessing to have help.”

Support by local businesses who are contributing back to the community as often as possible as it appears to be needed more now than ever to help keep our local families from going hungry.
