VFW Post 8904, Auxiliary Observe VJ Day

August 28, 2018 - World War II came to an end with the formal surrender of the Japanese on September 2, 1945 aboard the USS Missouri in Tokyo Bay and this day has become known as VJ Day (Victory over Japan).

Shelby County Memorial Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 8904 and the Auxiliary will hold an observance on Monday, September 3, 2018 at the Veterans Memorial on the grounds of the History Courthouse in Center.

VFW to Host Operation Iraqi Freedom Program

August 31, 2018 - Iraq War Veterans to be Remembered.

August 31st, 2010 marked the official end to US Combat Operations in Iraq. The Veterans of Foreign Wars will insure the patriotism and sacrifices of this generation to include US Army Specialist Larry E. Polley, Jr. of Center, Texas who was killed in action are never forgotten by the American people.

August 28, 2018 - Honoring the memory and longstanding service of Senator John McCain, the President of the United States has issued a proclamation ordering the flag of the United States to be displayed at half-staff from now until sunset on the day of interment, Sunday, September 2, 2018.

VFW to Observe Flag Day

June 14, 2018 - In the United States, Flag Day is celebrated on June 14. It commemorates the adoption of the flag of the United States, which happened on June 14, 1777. The United States Army also celebrates their birthday on this date.

In 1916, President Woodrow Wilson issued a proclamation that officially established June 14 as Flag Day. In August 1946, National Flag Day was established by an Act of Congress but is not an official federal holiday.

VFW Post 8904, Auxiliary to Remember D-Day with Laying of Memorial Wreath

June 6, 2018 - On June 6, 1944, 160,000 Allied troops landed along a 50-mile stretch of heavily-fortified French coastline to fight Nazi Germany on the beaches of Normandy, France. General Dwight D. Eisenhower called the operation a crusade in which “we will accept nothing less than full victory.” More than 5,000 Ships and 13,000 aircraft supported the D-Day invasion, and by day’s end on June 6, the Allies gained a foot- hold in Normandy.

Memorial Day, World War I

May 27, 2018 - As we approach the 150th Anniversary of the first Memorial Day in 1868 that was then called Decoration Day, we remember that 100 years ago World War I was raging in Europe. The United States had joined in the fighting some 13 months earlier on April 6, 1917 and Shelby County, Texas had lost the first six of 34 sons that would die in the service of their country during the World War.

Flag Half Staff Early Alert - Memorial Day

May 24, 2018 - On Memorial Day, Monday, May 28th, 2018 all United States Flags and others flying with should be flown at half-staff from sunrise until noon. This is in honor of all Americans who have died in the service of our country during a time of war. If you have a flag that cannot be lowered you can show respect for the day by tying a black cord or ribbon to the top of the staff.
