David’s Daily Devotion for July 22

July 22, 2024 - Good Morning! It's Monday, July 22.

My sister and brother-in-law paid us a visit this past weekend. They live in San Antonio - six hours from East Texas - and so we don't get to see them as often as we'd like. It was a blessing to have our families together for a few days.

Carolyn has always been, more than any of my siblings, the one who has worked to keep our family connected - the "glue". I think most families have someone like that, someone who understands the importance of family unity, someone who nurtures and encourages the ties that bind.

David’s Daily Devotion for July 18

July 18, 2024 - Good Morning! It's Thursday, July 18.

Don't look now, East Texas, but so far, we're having a relatively wet and cool summer. We're past the halfway point and haven't gotten near triple digits yet. That might not qualify as cool in most parts of the country, but it's practically balmy around here. And the grass is still green. Remember how everything turned a lovely shade of brown during last year's long, hot, dry summer?

So, we count our blessings. And refresh out souls with some refreshing scripture verses.

David’s Daily Devotion for July 17

July 17, 2024 - Good Morning! It's Wednesday, July 17, 2024.

On this day, in 2009, Walter Cronkite died. He was the anchorman of the CBS Evening News from 1962 to 1981. That was a time before 24-hour cable and the Internet, a time when people watched the same TV program at the same time. And most of America watched "Uncle Walter" deliver the news of the day.

David's Daily Devotion for July 15

July 15, 2024 - Good Morning! It's Monday, July 15.

And Jesus said to His disciples, Go into all the world, and proclaim the gospel to the whole creation. Mark 16:15

For decades, First Baptist Church of Center has been broadcasting a Bible lesson and a worship service each Sunday morning. When internet technology became available, our technicians were quick to make use of this new tool. Last night I was reminded of just how powerful and amazing that tool is.

David’s Daily Devotion for July 12

July 12, 2024 - Good Morning! It's Friday, July 12.

I first met Alice West in 2017, when I arrived in Center, Texas as Worship Minister at First Baptist Church. She was our organist and she welcomed me to town with a warm smile and a kind word. It made me feel special. But then I noticed that that was the way Alice greeted everyone, and it was the way she greeted me hundreds of times over the last seven years.

David’s Daily Devotion for July 11

July 11, 2024 - Good Morning! It's Thursday, July 11.

On this day in 1960, a book was published.  It was by an unknown author, her first book. The publishers predicted that, if they were lucky, it might sell three thousand copies. To date, it has sold 30 million. The young author won the Pulitzer Prize.  The book was turned into a movie that won the Academy Award. It has become standard curriculum in many schools. It is my favorite novel - "To Kill a Mockingbird".

David's Daily Devotion for July 10

July 10, 2024 - Good Morning! It's Wednesday, July 10.

My six-year-old granddaughter is visiting us this week. We started the morning by sitting for a while on the porch. Here's a devotion from three years ago, when she was three.

Today I'm focusing on an essential spiritual doctrine - the doctrine of the Front Porch. I searched the Bible for some scriptural background but came up empty. This was surprising, since it is such an important religious truth.

David's Daily Devotion for July 9

July 9, 2024 - Good Morning! It's Tuesday, July 9.

It was a stormy Monday for many people. I hope that you and yours made it through Hurricane Beryl unscathed. Our prayers today are with those who are still without power, those who are digging out from under wind damage, those who are cleaning out from flooding.

There's an old saying, "the calm before the storm". It's inspired by an actual weather phenomenon where a storm cell draws warm, moist air out of the atmosphere for fuel. The birds go quiet, the wind dies down... and then the fireworks begin!
