January 2, 2025 – Crews are scheduled to begin pre-treatment on area roads and bridges throughout the Lufkin District at 7 am Friday morning, ahead of weekend rainfall that could freeze on the roads Sunday night.
New TxDOT Safety Initiative Taps into the Lone Star Spirit
December 12, 2024 - People in Texas take pride in who they are. From holding the door open for a stranger to lending a helping hand to a neighbor, being a Texan is a way of life. But too many times, drivers leave that Lone Star spirit behind when they get on the road, which can often result in preventable crashes.
November 1, 2024 – Texas Transportation Commissioners on Thursday approved more than $1 billion in new construction projects statewide, with more than $15 million earmarked for the Lufkin District.
Houston County was approved for a $13.1 million construction project that will resurface SL 304 in Crockett from just east of SH 21 to just west of SH 19. Texas Materials Group, Inc., Cedar Park Tx, will serve as contractor. No timeline for completion has been set.
October 2, 2024 – While fall and winter give Texans a much-needed reprieve from the summer heat, the change in seasons also brings fewer daylight hours, making it harder for drivers to see pedestrians and keep them safe.
October is the deadliest month for pedestrians, with 80 pedestrians dying in Texas traffic crashes in 2023. In the Lufkin District in 2023, there were 48 traffic crashes involving pedestrians, resulting in 13 pedestrian fatalities and 13 pedestrian serious injuries.
September 10, 2024 – As Tropical Storm Francine approaches the Texas/Louisiana Gulf Coast, TxDOT wants motorists to be prepared for possible heavy rainfall that could impact East Texas. Francine is expected to grow to Hurricane strength by landfall on Wednesday, but rain is expected on Wednesday in the Lufkin District ahead of the storm’s landfall.
Lufkin District crews are preparing and will monitor roadways, ditches, and other areas prone to flooding throughout the day on Wednesday and into Thursday.
September 3, 2024 – TxDOT is hosting a virtual public hearing with an in-person option on Thursday, September 5 for the US 59/US 259 North Nacogdoches (Future I-69) construction project. This project is being designed to bring US 59 and the US 59/US 259 interchange up to current interstate standards by making it a controlled access roadway and reconfiguring the interchange.
July 31, 2024 – A new school year is about to begin and TxDOT is calling on everyone to be extra cautious in school zones and around school buses to help keep students safe.
As drivers encounter school buses on the road and students loading and unloading at area schools, motorists are urged to stay alert and remember that with the new school year, congestion increases on the roadway.
July 23, 2024 – The TxDOT Lufkin District is conducting a public hearing with in-person or virtual options to propose replacing the existing bridge on SH 7 (Main Street) at Lanana Creek in Nacogdoches.
The hearing is scheduled Thursday, August 1. The virtual option will be available online by 5 p.m. and the in-person option is set from 5 – 7 p.m. at the Nacogdoches Exposition and Civic Center, 2805 NW Stallings Drive in Nacogdoches.

Three Texans died daily as a result — their lives extinguished at the hands of those who never thought they would be responsible for a roadside tragedy.
