Buckle Up to Save Your Own Life; Click It or Ticket Underway Through June 2

May 15, 2024 – In the time it takes to read this sentence, Texans can click their seat belt and save themselves from an early grave — and save their loved ones from the sorrow of preventable loss.

While millions wear their seat belts every day as drivers or passengers, unbuckled drivers and passengers accounted for 1,183 — that’s 28 percent — of the more than 4,200 lives lost on Texas roads last year, and nearly half of all fatalities where someone could have worn a seat belt.

SL 224 Closure at BU 59 in Nacogdoches

April 22, 2024 - On Tuesday, April 23, 2024, construction crews will close NW Loop 224 at the BU 59 overpass. All northwest bound traffic must travel through the signal and take alternate routes.

On Wednesday, April 24, 2024, there will be a southbound lane closure in place on SL 224 near US 59.

Lufkin District, State Preparing for Eclipse

April 5, 2024 — The Texas Department of Transportation is warning drivers to take extra caution on Monday, April 8, as a total solar eclipse will be visible throughout the state from late morning to early afternoon.

As this intergalactic experience comes front and center, out-of-state visitors and Texans traveling to get a perfect view are expected. This will cause heavier traffic on major roadways. Plan for delays, longer travel times, and give yourself extra time to get to your destination before and after the eclipse.

Closures Expected on US 59 for Diboll Relief Route

March 25, 2024 – Closures are expected to begin next week on a major construction project in Angelina County.

Much of the work on the Diboll Relief Route has been off the roadway and out of site of the traveling public, but beginning Tuesday, March 26, motorists should prepare for lane closures in Burke, weather permitting.

March 18, 2024 – Katie Parker still gets nervous just crossing the street.

Eight years ago, a careless driver plowed into her and her dog, Riley, while they were out for a jog. Parker was hit with such force that she was thrown more than 60 feet. Riley, a Great Dane, was killed on what was supposed to be a pleasant morning jog.

Two Shelby County Bridges Closed for Replacement

Two additional bridges also slated for replacement later in the year.

March 8, 2024 – Two Shelby County bridges are currently closed as work began this week to construct new bridges.

County Road 4760 at the Attoyac Bayou Relief, and CR 3047 at Prairie Creek are closed for the bridge replacement project that is scheduled to be complete by August, weather permitting.

TxDOT, Students Team Up to Prevent DUI Crashes During Spring Break

March 1, 2024 – As spring break approaches, TxDOT is teaming up with college students to make sure their celebrations don’t have catastrophic consequences.

The Drive Sober. No Regrets. campaign is traveling to college campuses and spring break hot spots across the state to spread the message that there is always a safe and sober way to get home.

Speed Limit to be Reduced on Section of US 84 in Shelby County

February 15, 2024 – A speed limit reduction has been approved by Texas Transportation Commissioners on a busy Shelby County highway.

The speed limit on US 84 will be lowered from 70 mph to 65 mph from the city limits of Joaquin to 1.65 miles west. The Lufkin District conducted the prescribed engineering and traffic study to determine the recommended lower speed limit on this section of roadway.

Motorists are urged to stay alert and obey the new speed limit that is enforceable once signs are set.
