January 31, 2022 - Jacksonville hosted varsity tennis teams from 12 schools and Center finished in the top 4 in multiple events.

Boys A singles: Ian Williams - 4th place
Boys B singles: Ryker Tomlin - lost in quarterfinals

Boys A doubles: Lance Holloway / Levi Rodriguez - 4th place
Boys B doubles: Erick Rojas / Ryan Jones - 1st place

Girls A doubles: Sarah Scull / Emilee Elliott - 1st place
Girls B doubles: Sayre Hall / Reese Cockrell - 1st place

Girls A singles: Brooke Gaddy - won consolation
Girls B singles: Anna Hagler - 4th place

Mixed A doubles: Ethan McElroy / Arista Lee - won consolation
Mixed B doubles: Connor McCauley / Jalen Postell - 2nd place

Overall, in 7 out of 10 events Center finished in the top 4 and in 3 events Center had 1st place finishes.

The tournament was a good start to the spring season.

Next up, the Kilgore Varsity tournament is rescheduled based on the forecast to Tuesday, February 1st and the Junior Varsity Kilgore Tournament is Tuesday, February 8th.

Tenaha High School on January 28, 2022 –

The Timpson Bears girls and boys varsity basketball teams each competed at Tenaha on Friday. The Lady Bears girls team fell to the Lady Tigers by a 44-35 score. The Bears boys beat the Tigers by a 75-72 score.

The Lady Tigers jumped out to an early lead and led 6-0 midway through the opening period. Tenaha led 10-4 at the conclusion of the first quarter. The second period was hard fought and Tenaha held a 23-16 lead at the halftime intermission.

The Lady Tigers built on their lead in the third period by outpacing the Lady Bears 12-5 points. Tenaha took a 35-21 advantage into the fourth quarter of play.

The Lady Bears were able to outscore the Lady Tigers 14-9 in the final frame but Tenaha held on for the 44-35 win.

Timpson was led by Emma Ramsey with ten points. Jasmine Dodd was leading scorer for Tenaha with 15.

This win improved the Lady Tigers record to 24-5 overall and they are now 10-0 in District 23 2A competition. The Lady Bears are now 17-5 overall and 8-2 in the conference.

The boys varsity contest saw Timpson hold a slim 8-7 lead midway through the opening frame. The Bears led 20-17 at the conclusion of the first period. Timpson outpaced Tenaha 19-13 points during the second stanza and the Bears carried a 39-30 advantage into the lockerroom at the midway break.

The third period saw Tenaha claw back and cut the Timpson lead to six points. The game went into the fourth quarter with the Bears holding a 54-48 advantage.

The final frame saw Tenaha outscore Timpson 24-21 but the Bears were able to hold on for the 75-72 win. This win gives Timpson an 18-3 overall record and an 8-0 District 23 2A mark. Tenaha is now 13-6 for the season and 8-2 in conference action.

Ja'tyrian Moore led the Tigers with 27 points. Terry Bussey led Timpson with 22.

Tenaha will travel to San Augustine on Tuesday, February 1, 2022 where junior varsity is slated to tip off at 4:30 p.m. and varsity girls and boys action will follow at Wolves Gymnasium.

Timpson will host the Joaquin Rams on Tuesday, February 1 at Bears Gym. Junior varsity is scheduled to begin at 4:30 p.m. with varsity action to follow.

Gary High School on Tuesday, January 25, 2022 –

The Tenaha Lady Tigers and the Tigers each took District 23 2A varsity basketball wins over Gary High School on Tuesday at Bobcats Gymnasium. The Lady Tigers defeated the Lady Bobcats by a 62-31 score. The Tigers boys team defeated the Bobcats by a much narrower 43-40 score.

The first nine minutes of the girl’s game saw the Lady Tigers jump out to an impressive 14-0 lead. By the end of the first quarter THS led 22-5. Tenaha’s lead was 38-13 at the halftime buzzer. THS led by 37 points at the end of the third stanza as they held a 58-21 advantage.

Two Lady Tigers put up double figures scoring. Lucy Giles scored 20 and Jasmine Dodd added 10 points to the THS tally sheet. Gary was led by Carly Linebarger with 17 points.

The boy’s game was close throughout. The game was knotted at 10-10 midway through the opening frame. The second quarter started with the teams tied at 15-15 and ended with the teams tied at 27-27. THS led Gary by a slim 36-34 score at the end of the third period.

Jatyrian Moore led THS with 16 points. Dustin Baker led Gary with 16.

Tenaha is now 13-5 overall and they are 6-1 in conference play. Tenaha will host the Timpson Bears on Friday, January 29, 2022 at the THS Special Events Center. Junior Varsity tips off at 4:30 p.m. with Varsity action to follow.

Joaquin Rams Gymnasium on Friday, January 21, 2022 –

The Shelbyville Lady Dragons and Dragons varsity basketball teams each took District 23 2A wins over Joaquin High School on Friday. In girl’s varsity play Shelbyville won by a 56-43 score. The Dragons boy’s team won by a narrow 60-57 score.

The Lady Rams held a 9-8 lead at the end of the first quarter. The Lady Dragons outscored Joaquin 16-9 during the second stanza and SHS took a 24-18 advantage into the midway break.

Shelbyville was able to distance themselves from Joaquin during the third frame by outpacing them 18-9 points and they led 42-27 going into the final period. Joaquin was able to outpace Shelbyville 16-14 points during the final frame but it was not enough as the Lady Dragons took the 56-43 conference win.

Shelbyville senior guard Kiana Bennett led all scorers with 34 points. Lady Ram sophomore guard Ke’maria Wilson led her team with 17 points.

The boys varsity game was hard fought and close. Joaquin led 18-14 at the end of the first period. Shelbyville trailed 28-25 at halftime. JHS held a 44-40 lead at the conclusion of the third quarter. Shelbyville was able to outscore JHS 20-13 points in the final period to take the 60-57 win.

Joaquin’s sophomore postman Bennett Anglin led all scorers with 18 points for the day.

On Tuesday, January 25, 2022 Joaquin will travel to Martinsville for conference games with the Pirates. Tipoff for JV will be at 4:30 p.m. with varsity girls and boys action to follow.

Shelbyville will have a bye/ open date for Tuesday.

January 21, 2022 - Watlington and Shires productions is pleased to provide a live stream of tonight's district basketball games for both the Roughriders and the Lady Riders. Tonight, Center visits the Hudson Hornet's. Tonight is their homecoming game.

Pregame for the ladies will begin at 6:15 featuring the coach talk with head coach Cory Leverson. Tip off will be around 630.

Between games, during the crossover show, we will visit with the player of the game and with both Coach Leverson and boys coach Hiram Harrison. During the halftime show of the boys game, we will visit with Mar Mar Evans, the Rider junior who recently scored his 1,000th point.

Finally, during the post game show we will meet the boys player of the game and wrap it up with Coach Harrison.

Center High School on Tuesday, January 18, 2022 –

Tuesday night saw the Center Roughriders varsity and junior varsity girls and boys basketball teams host the Carthage Bulldogs for District 17 4A games.

In varsity action the Lady Roughriders led at the end of the first quarter by an 8-5 score. Carthage was able to outscore Center 12-4 during the second stanza and they led 17-12 at the midway break.

Carthage stretched their lead to eight points in the third frame and they led 31-23 going into the fourth quarter. The Lady Bulldogs were able to outscore the Lady ‘Riders 11-4 in the final period as they took the win by a 42-27 final score. The Lady Roughriders are now 2-1 in conference play and they are at 5-12 for a season mark.

The boys varsity game was close early. Center trailed 23-21 points at the buzzer ending the first quarter. They fell behind 39-36 by halftime. Center outscored the Carthage Bulldogs 49-35 in the second half however to earn a 70-58 district win. The ‘Riders are now 1-1 in conference play and they have a 14-8 overall standing.

Center will travel to face the Hudson Hornets on Friday, January 21, 2022 where JV will tip off at 4:30 p.m. and varsity action will follow.

The track team is led by Head Coaches Jared Jones and Mindy Bragg. Assistant Coach is Jared Duck. The boys Athletic Director is Wade Lawson and the girls Athletic Director is Steven McCann.

Joaquin Rams Gymnasium on Friday, January 14, 2022 –

On Friday Tenaha High School travelled to Joaquin to face off in District 23 Class 2A girls and boys basketball games.

The Tenaha Lady Tigers varsity never trailed the Joaquin Lady Rams as they jumped out to an early 26-0 lead over JHS by the end of the first quarter. THS led 34-6 at the midway break. Tenaha outpaced Joaquin 15-10 points during the third frame and they led them 49-16 going into the final period. The Lady Tigers eventually took a 53-30 conference win.

Itiyanna Dagley led THS with 25 points for the night. JJ Bass led JHS with 9 points.

The Tenaha Tigers boys team also led throughout their game but this game was much closer. THS led 14-7 after the opening stanza. 32-16 at halftime and 53-33 after three quarters. The Tigers won the game by a 67-51 score.

Ram Malik Stotts led all scorers with 21 points in this game. Kaleb Oswalt added 17 points to the JHS tally and Bennett Anglin scored ten. Tenaha scorers in double digits were Jordan Ross 18, Brikelian Kenney 15, Ja’tyrian Moore 15 and Trindon Claiborne with 13.

The girls Junior Varsity contest between these two schools proved to be the closest game of the night. The contest went into tie-breaker mode after the teams ended regulation play tied at 17 points apiece. Tenaha eventually took the win by a single point. Joaquin alumni Katelyn Martinez was spotted coaching her former team.

Roughriders Gymnasium on Tuesday, January 11, 2022 –

The Center Lady Roughriders varsity basketball team improved their District 17 4A record to 2-0 with a 41-33 home win over the Jasper Lady Bulldogs on Tuesday.

The Lady ‘Riders started slow and trailed Jasper 6-7 points at the end of the first period. Senior guard Kiddra Harper hit a 3-pointer late in the second period which helped CHS to take a narrow 18-17 lead into the lockerroom at the midway intermission.

Center outpaced Jasper 10-8 points during the third stanza and they took a 28-25 lead into the fourth period. CHS was able to outpace Jasper 13-8 points in the final frame to take the win. Sophomore May Johnson led Center with 11 points. Jakayla Brown led Jasper with 12.

The Lady ‘Riders now are 5-10 overall this season. They will travel to Palestine on Friday, January 14, 2022. Junior Varsity will tip off at 5 p.m. and varsity play will follow.
