May 23, 2017 - In our quest to account for all World War I Veterans from Shelby County, Texas or those now buried here during this Centennial year we have established a beginning data base of 494 names. Not all of their information is complete and I am sure there are names missing also. This list was compiled from various sources including citizens input during the past couple of months.
May 16, 2017 - Since 1922, the Buddy Poppy has been an integral part of the VFW community. As VFW’s official memorial flower, the Poppy represents the blood shed by American service members and it reiterates that the Veterans of Foreign Wars and the Auxiliary will never forget their sacrifices.
April 28, 2017 - Larry Hume, VFW Post 8904 Quartermaster, is looking for a family member(s) of Forrest Pierce Jones (1899-1958) who served in World War II and is buried in the Antioch Cemetery. His wife was Ora O. Summers Jones (1896-1931) and children Eiland Jones (1921-1988) and Frances Marie Jones Reynolds (1924-2010).

April 24, 2017 - Loyalty Day originally began as "Americanization Day" in 1921 as a counter to the Communists’ May 1 celebration of the Russian Revolution. On May 1, 1930, 10,000 VFW members staged a rally at New York’s Union Square to promote patriotism. May 1st evolved into Loyalty Day and the first official observance of the day was in 1959 after the signing of Public Law 85-529 on July 18, 1958.
