June 28, 2023 - Good Morning! It's Wednesday, June 28.
Last week's Sunday School lesson was about Queen Esther and her adopted father, Mordecai. I encourage you to read through the Book of Esther this week - it's one of the most dramatic and inspiring stories in the Bible. They've made movies about it! And this short book, just 10 chapters, contains one of the most memorable verses in the Word of God. Esther 4:14 ends with this statement - "Perhaps you have come to royal position for such a time as this".

Our focus today is on a man named James Smithson. Never heard of him? Ok, he was born in Paris in 1765 and made his fortune as a chemist. Still not ringing any bells? Alright - this should do it - Smithson, an Englishman, died on June 27, 1829, and left all his money to the United States to create an institute of education, an institute that bears his name, the Smithsonian.

Today's devotion is all about 3:16. There are 49 "3:16" verses in the Bible. Bu there are 66 books in the Bible, so why aren't there 66? Well, some books, like Psalms, have a 3rd chapter with less than 16 verses, and other books, like Jude, don't have a 3rd chapter at all.

Over the last three years there's been one word that has most often crossed our minds and crossed our lips - the word "pandemic". But during the first half of the 20th century, there was another pandemic that affected millions of lives - polio. On June 23, 1995, a man died that, more than any other person, brought that pandemic to a close. The man's name was Jonas Salk.

I'm old school when it comes to writing. This daily devotion ends up on my computer, but it begins on a yellow pad, written by a pen. And not just any pen. It has to be the "Pilot Precise Rolling Ball V5 Extra Fine"! I'm not that particular about most things. If my coffee is hot, that's good enough for me. And if a car gets me where I need to go, I don't care that much about what it looks like. But when it comes to pens - there's only one choice. There is no substitute.

Each Sunday at 9am, I have the privilege of sharing a Bible lesson over my church's broadcast network. The focus of that lesson last Sunday was the story of a boy named Samuel, a boy who would grow up to be a great prophet of God.
June 19, 2023 - Good Morning! It's Monday, June 19.
Today is a federal holiday that celebrates freedom. Growing up in Texas, I've always known about "Juneteenth." On this day in 1865 in Galveston, a general named Granger read the Emancipation Declaration. President Lincoln had declared freedom for the slaves two and a half years earlier, but news traveled slowly back then.

This Sunday, June 18th, is Father's Day. And June 18th just happens to be my father's birthday. That happens once in awhile, and I'll certainly be remembering him this Sunday - as I know you'll be thinking of your dad.

On June 15, 1976, something totally unexpected occurred - a Major League Baseball game was rained out. Not that unexpected, you say? Happens all the time, you say? Well, this particular game, called off for rain, was set to be played in the Astrodome - indoors!
