July 25, 2023 - Good Morning! It's Tuesday, July 25.

Last night I did something I've never done before. It was three a.m. and I had had a visit from insomnia, a frequent visitor since I turned left at middle age. This time, however, instead of turning on the TV, or turning over and trying to get back to sleep, I decided to go outside.

On this day in 1725, a boy was born in England. His father was a ship's captain. His mother died when he was six, and at the young age of 11, his father took him to sea. He, too, eventually came to captain a ship, a slave ship. Later he would share the testimony of a storm on the sea that came one night, a night when John Newton experienced a life-changing spiritual conversion.

On this day, in 2009, Walter Cronkite died. He was the anchorman of the CBS Evening News from 1962 to 1981. That was a time before 24-hour cable and the Internet, a time when people watched the same TV program at the same time. And most of America watched "Uncle Walter" deliver the news of the day.

Do you know the name Cicely Saunders? She was born in England in 1918. During World War II she became a nurse, and then later a doctor. Her work put her into contact with many terminally ill patients, some of whom were her own loved ones. As a result of her experiences, and her personal grief, she developed a new type of care for those facing their final days, a system that we now know as hospice.
