June 9, 2026 - Good Morning!  It’s Tuesday, June 9.

I was going through some of my collections the other day and came across a coin with an interesting history - the 1943 Steel Penny.  I wouldn't call myself a coin collector, I only have a couple of dozen.  I've shared in this venue about one of them, a 2000-year-old Roman coin that I imagine being held by someone who saw Christ.

A famous writer once gave an interesting quote about Heaven.  He said, “I think that Paradise will be like a big library.” Devout book lovers will see some sense in that - they’re always longing for more time to just sit and read.  Eternity in a library sounds pretty good to me.

June 5, 2026 - Good Morning! It’s Friday, June 5.

My wife’s favorite TV show is the Hallmark series “When Calls the Heart”.  She loves it. I think she’s seen every episode - twice. It’s a story about the people in a Canadian town in 1910. I don’t watch it (Did I mention it was a Hallmark show?). But wherever I am in my house I can hear it. It has unfortunately become the background soundtrack of my life. And on several occasions I’ve heard the gospel chorus “This Little Light of Mine”.

On this day, in 1937, author Robert Fulghum was born. In 1986, 40 years ago, he published a little book that sold 17 million copies, stayed on the bestseller list for two years, and has been translated into 27 languages. I’ve got a copy of it in my library. It’s titled “All I Really Need to Know I Learned in Kindergarten.”

In yesterday’s devotion I reminisced about growing up with - and loving - Vacation Bible School. I recalled how those special summer weeks featured not only fun songs and fun games, not only yummy snacks and creative crafts - I still have the paper towel holder I made 60 years ago! - but also included scripture memorization. A great experience for kids. A great practice for adults too.

The first week in June, the first week of summer, many churches have a special event for children. For some it may be a sports themed camp or maybe a music camp, but for most it’s Vacation Bible School. I grew up going to Vacation Bible School, perhaps you did too. I loved VBS - the songs, the games, the crafts, the snacks. And every day we’d memorize another Bible verse. And I’d love that too. Here’s some verses that I love.

Last week brought us another edition of the National Spelling Bee. For over a hundred years young students have travelled to Constitution Hall in Washington D.C. to compete for the grand prize. This year it was a check for 50,000 dollars. That’s nice money for a twelve-year-old!

My sister’s spending a week of vacation in Arizona. When I heard about her trip, I warned her to be prepared for hot weather. I’ve been there only once, an August day in Phoenix. The experience, I imagine, was very similar to vacationing on the face of the Sun. And it’ll be 107 degrees this coming week in Phoenix.

On May 27, 1935, something revolutionary happened, something that would change the world. Alan Turing, a 23-year-old student at England’s Cambridge University, published a scholarly paper. This paper described a device that would come to be called “The Turing Machine”. We have a different name for it today . . . the computer.
