May 31, 2016 - The Texas Transportation Commission last week approved 60 maintenance and construction projects across the state totaling $186.3 million, with five located in the Lufkin District that total $8 million.
Angelina, Nacogdoches, Polk, San Jacinto and Trinity counties were approved for construction projects that will rehabilitate roadways, replace and repair bridge and approaches, upgrade culverts and resurface existing pavement. Specific projects included:

May 9, 2016 LUFKIN – Construction on US 59 in Nacogdoches County will progress this week as additional concrete is placed on the westbound exit ramp near SL 224.
Construction crews will work on the ramp where it intersects the loop and continue to construct driveways and sidewalks throughout the project. Curb and gutter is also being replaced and repaired and cross-drainage structures are also being extended. Concrete will also be placed at the northeast corner of East Spradley and subcontractors are planning to mow throughout project, weather permitting.

As rural Texas grows, so does need for transportation options
April 29, 2016 AUSTIN – The Texas Transportation Commission awarded more than $19.4 million to rural transit providers across the state that assist people in getting to health care facilities, schools, employment and other necessary destinations. The federally-supported initiative provides public transportation funding for rural areas with populations of less than 50,000.
April 27, 2016 - LUFKIN – FM1878/Starr Avenue in Nacogdoches will be open to traffic beginning Thursday.
Drewery Construction, contractor for the $1.4 million construction project, upgraded a section of roadway from North Street (BU 59) to Clark Boulevard, widening the roadway from two to four lanes. Six foot sidewalks and ADA curb ramps to accommodate pedestrians were also constructed.
April 27, 2016 - AUSTIN – On average, a motorcyclist dies in a crash on Texas roads every day. To mark Motorcycle Safety Awareness Month in May – and to remember the 455 motorcyclists lost in crashes last year – the Texas Department of Transportation is launching its “Share the Road: Look Twice for Motorcycles” campaign.
April 13, 2016 - AUSTIN – Two seconds. That’s how long Rodney Matthews, former construction inspector for the Texas Department of Transportation, had to react after he heard a crash and a driver drove through his work zone. Matthews was thrown 30 feet in the air and sustained a concussion and severe injuries, but was lucky to survive. Not everyone gets that second chance.
