September 2, 2016 - The Tenaha Tigers varsity football team used five second-half scores to blow a close game wide open, and defeat the visiting Kerens Bobcats, by a 43-12 score last Friday, at Tigers Stadium.

Tenahas’ Jay Lloyd scored a touchdown with 8:33 remaining in the first half. The extra point attempt failed and Tenaha led 6-0. Kerens’ Katerous Douglas answered with a touchdown with 6:57 remaining before the midway intermission. The game was tied 6-6 at halftime.

Abel Rodrigues gave the Tenaha Tigers a 9-6 advantage when he kicked a 38-yard field goal with 8:27 left in the third period. Trai Gardner scored two touchdowns in each the third and fourth quarters, and teammate Onterio Thompson added another second half score to help seal the win.

The Tigers will host Dallas Gateway Christian Academy next Friday, September 9 at 7:30 p.m. Gateway posts a 1-1 record and lost to Temple Christian Academy by a 31-14 margin last week.

September 5, 2016 – The Center Roughriders varsity football team had an early lead and trailed only 27-21 at halftime. But they later saw Gilmer spool off 50 unanswered points, in route to a 70-21 Buckeye homecoming win. The Buckeyes outscored the ‘Riders 43-0 in the second half. The game played out at Gilmer’s Jeff Traylor Stadium and was the Buckeyes 22 consecutive home field win dating back to 2012.

Center had the first possession but only managed to move the ball four yards on their opening drive. CHS punted the football to the GHS 31 yard line. Gilmer capped a 69 yard scoring drive with a 37-yard touchdown reception from Poppy Brown to Qua Heath with 8:11 left in the first period. The Gilmer extra point attempt bounced off the upright and was no good. Gilmer led 6-0.

Center got their first first-down of the contest on their next drive but was forced to punt the ball back to Gilmer after only advancing the football to their own 35-yard line. Gilmer took over possession on their own 25-yard line after a good Center punt and a holding penalty. On the fourth play of their possession Heath pulled down his second touchdown reception of the game and gave GHS a 13-0 lead with 5:25 left in the opening frame.

Gilmer gave Center the football early in the second quarter after losing a fumble at Center’s 30 yard line. Roughrider quarterback, Kyle Parks, hit Adrian Johnson near midfield and the receiver wasted no time dodging a defender and racing 49 yards for a score with 11 minutes left in the first half. Marcos Lopez kicked the extra point to pull CHS to within 13-7 of Gilmer.

After Center forced Gilmer into their only punt, Kyle Parks exploded for a 27-yard touchdown with 6:59 left in the first half, capping a 65-yard scoring drive, and giving Center a 14-13 lead.

Gilmer capped a 62-yard scoring drive when Brown took a keeper 12 yards up the middle for a score which gave GHS a 20-14 lead with 3:51 left before the midway break.

Center tied things up on a 54-yard scoring drive capped by a 2-yard Parks score, after a failed Gilmer onside kick. Lopez gave CHS a narrow 21-20 lead, with a good extra point kick, with just 1:03 left before halftime.

Gilmer capped a 62-yard scoring drive with a weaving 20-yard run by Kelton Collier with just seconds left before the intermission. Cap Ibarra kicked the extra point and Gilmer took a 27-21 lead into the locker room at the midway break.

Center led in the takeover category as they recovered two Gilmer fumbles and did not turn the ball over during the contest. Gilmer led on total yardage with 677 yards to Center’s 269. Gilmer gained 33 first downs to Center’s 12.

Next week Center will head to Gladewater to face the Bears Friday, September 9, at 7:30 p.m. Gladewater beat Kilgore Friday by a 29-27 score. They are 1-1 after losing, 14-10, to Carthage on opening week.

September 1, 2016 - Timpson ISD Bear Update

Lady Bear Volleyball News

The Varsity Lady Bear Volleyball team hosted Nacogdoches Home School last Friday night. The Lady Bears played extremely well and won in 3 sets.

The Lady Bears hosted Center last night and again played extremely well. The result of that was a Lady Bear victory in 5 sets. Our coaching staff is very proud of the fight and determination the girls showed last night and have shown all season. We want to thank the fans that show up and support the girls. Your support doesn't go unnoticed by the girls.

We will be back to business as usual today and tomorrow with workouts and volleyball practice. We travel to Winona Friday and Saturday for a tournament and travel to Colmesneil Tuesday, September 6th.

Timpson beat Center 3-2. Games scores were 19-25; 25-23; 25-18; 19-25;15-8.

August 30, 3016 – Three county varsity football teams will be looking for their first 2016 season wins this week. Two teams will be looking to stay in the win column after getting opening day wins.

The Center Roughriders opened up the season with a 27-21 home win over the Rusk Eagles which was surprisingly close to many fans. The Roughriders face Gilmer this week, at Gilmer Buckeyes Stadium, this Friday, September 2, at 7:30 p.m. The two teams met up in the regional round of last year’s playoffs with the Buckeyes coming out on top. Gilmer gained a narrow 61-55 win over Liberty-Eylau High School last Thursday.

Updated Wednesday: Coach Barry Bowman said Wednesday, at the CHS Coachs' Coffee meeting, "Center and Gilmer know what each other do well. There are no big secrets between these two teams. We cannot get 'Big Eyed' just because they are Gilmer. Their coaching staff has been together since 2000. We know they will likely put up some points. They scored 61 points last week against a Liberty Eylau team who can play with just about anybody. We need to control the football, we cannot turn over the ball. We are capable of playing with the Buckeyes if we are smart with the football and the clock."

The Timpson Bears suffered a tough 20-14 road loss to the West Sabine Tigers in a long game which was delayed by lightning. The Bears trailed 14-0 for the middle portion of the game but tied things up late before giving up the final score of the contest. The Bears have a bye this week and will travel to Cross Roads on Friday, September 9 to face the Bobcats. The Bobcats suffered a 56-19 loss to the Frost Polar Bears last week.

The Joaquin Rams suffered a tough 14-0 loss to the Tenaha Tigers at home last Friday. The Rams defense looked good most the night but their offense never consistently got rolling during the game while playing against a stingy Tigers offense. The Rams will travel to Maud Cardinals Field to play the ‘Cards who lost on the road to Ore City, by a 35-28 margin, last Friday.

The Shelbyville Dragons fought back, on the road, to make their game with the Elkhart Elks close late in the game. Elkhart scored once again very late in the contest and ultimately defeated SHS by a 42-28 margin. Shelbyville plays the Hemphill Hornets, this Friday, at 7:30 p.m. in Dragons Stadium. The Hornets fell in a 19-16 game to the San Augustine Wolves last week.

The Tenaha Tigers opened up their 2016 football season with a 14-0 win over their cross-county rival, the Joaquin Rams. Tenahas’ offense struggled with wet field conditions but their defense held Joaquins’ offense in check for the most part. The Tigers will host Kerens High School, at Tigers Stadium, this Friday at 7:30 p.m. The Kerens Bobcats lost at home to Jewett-Leon High School by a 41-21 margin.

August 27, 2016 - The Tenaha Tigers varsity football team used two second quarter touchdowns, and a very stingy defense, to defeat the Joaquin Rams, by a 14-0 score. The game was a cross-county rivalry game, played at Joaquin Rams Stadium, last Friday. The game was both teams season opener.

Joaquin had the first possession after Tenaha deferred receiving the opening kickoff, after winning the coin-toss. Tray Wilkerson soon gained the Rams first first-down with an 18-yard scamper around the end, up to the Tigers 48-yard line, on second down and fifteen yards-to-go. The Rams drive stalled with 9:47 remaining in the opening period. They punted the ball which was downed by THS at the Tenaha 7-yard line.

Tigers quarterback CJ Horn hit Trai Gardner for a 20-yard reception, on first down, which gave THS room to breathe, and a first down at their own 27-yard line. On the second play from scrimmage, Cody Forshee pulled in a 10-yard pass to move the ball up to Tenahas’ 37-yard line. This gave THS another first down. The Tigers drive stalled moments later and they punted the ball which was downed at the Rams 30-yard line.

Joaquins’ next drive stalled after they gained one first down on a 16-yard Wilkerson run early in the drive. Tenaha took over possession at their 21-yard line with 3:09 left in the first period. Tenaha moved the ball to midfield by the end of the first period. Jaquailin Franks caught a pass from Horn to start the second period and was brought down at the Rams 44-yard line after getting first down yardage. Gardner and Jay Lloyd each caught passes to get Tenaha another first down at the Joaquin 21-yard line with 11 minutes left in the second stanza. Tenaha saw this drive stall and turned the ball over on downs with 9 minutes remaining in the first half.

Joaquin fumbled the ball to Tenaha but they soon turned the ball back over to JHS when Conner Bragg stepped in front of a Tigers pass and gave Joaquin the ball back at the Rams 5-yard line with 8:05 left before halftime. Joaquin could not get their offense moving and Tk Gardner sacked Wilkerson for a 4-yard loss on third-down and long to force a JHS punt which gave Tenaha possession at Joaquins’ 44-yard line, with less than six minutes remaining in the second frame.

Tenaha mounted the first scoring drive of the game, a 44-yarder, which was capped by an Onterio Thompson 11-yard touchdown run which saw him bust an inside run to the outside. He then out-raced the Rams defense to the corner of the endzone.  Abel Rodriguez added the extra point and THS led 7-0 with just 2:21 left before the midway break.

Joaquins’ next drive stalled near midfield and the Tigers wasted no time scoring. Thompson took a shovel-pass reception 52-yards to score with a mere 8.8 seconds remaining. Rodriguez added his second extra point kick of the night for what would prove to be the final point scored for the night. Tenaha took a 14-0 lead into the locker room at the conclusion of the first half.

The Tigers’ first offensive drive, of the second half, stalled and they punted the ball to Joaquin inside the Rams’ 5-yard line. Tigers’ defensive back, Cody Foshee intercepted the ball to give THS possession at the Rams 37-yard line with 7:55 left in the third stanza. Just one minute later Rams linebacker Nate Belrose got possession back for JHS when he covered a fumble at Joaquin’s 12-yard line.

With less than two minutes left in the third period, Chase Lilly recovered a fumble to give THS possession going into the final period of play.

Joaquin gained possession of the football with 10 minutes left in the contest but Tee Giles stripped the football away from a Rams ball carrier and THS took over the football, at their 40-yard line, with 9:08 left to play.

Abel Rodriguez attempted a Tigers’ field goal from 46-yards away but the football dropped just inches short with 5:55 left in the game. Joaquin took over possession at the their own 20-yard line.

The Rams were forced to punt the ball back to THS with 3:33 left and Tenaha was able to stall the remaining time off the clock to gain the win.

Tenaha led in the turnover category by a 4-2 takeaway ratio. CJ Horn passed for 190 yards and completed 12 for 16 attempts. Tenaha had 14 first downs with Joaquin gaining three. Tenaha had 268 yards of total offense with Joaquin posting 87 yards.

Tenaha Head Football Coach Craig Horn said, “The weather didn’t affect our game plan but the soft field was tough on legs. Our defense and line, on both sides of the ball, did a good job. I feel we are improved from this time last year. Our defensive line got a lot of three-and-outs, I couldn’t be prouder. We may have left some points off the board but we did well playing with a slick ball.”

Next week Tenaha will host the Kerens Bobcats at Tiger Stadium at 7:30 p.m. on Friday, September 2. The Bobcats lost to Jewett-Leon by a 41-21 score.

Joaquin will go to Maud, on Friday, for a 7:30 p.m. kickoff with the Cardinals. Maud lost to Ore City 35-28.
