Lions Shut Out Bears On Own Turf

September 26, 2016 – The Lovelady Lions varsity football team shut out the Timpson Bears by a 27-0 score. The Bears loss came at home, at John Herbert Eakin Stadium, last Friday. Lovelady had a 14-0 lead by the conclusion of the first period and held the Bears to 12 yards of offense on their first three possessions.

Penalties, interceptions, and fumbles, which caused the Bears to fall on the football in their own backfield, resulted in negative yardage, costing the Bears any chance they had to claw their way back into the football game.

Devon Hammock kicked two second quarter field goals, from 19 and 20-yards out, to give the Lions a 20-0 lead at the midway break.

Lions’ receiver Lee Holsey caught an 11-yard touchdown with 7:11 left in the contest for the game’s final score.

The Bears were 3/11 passing, for four net yards, and had two interceptions. Lovelady was 5/19 passing for 98 yards. Timpson rushed for 93 yards on the night and had 97 total offensive yards gained. The Lions rushed for 158 yards and had 256 total yards of offense. LHS had ten first downs. Timpson gained seven first downs. Lovelady had 40 yards of penalties, while Timpson amassed 63 yards.

Timpson is now 2-2 and they have an open week for this Friday. THS will next play the Wortham Bulldogs, at JH Eakin Stadium in Timpson, on October 7, at 7 p.m. This game will begin District 11 2A play for both teams.

District 11 has several teams with similar records who will be competing for four conference playoff positions. Timpson and the Grapeland Sandies each have a 2-2 record. The Mount Enterprise Wildcats are close behind at 1-4. The Wortham Bulldogs have a 3-2 mark, the Overton Mustangs a 3-1 standing, and the neighboring Tenaha Tigers have an unblemished 5-0 record.

Tenaha JV, Jr High Football Schedule Change (Updated)

September 22, 2016 - The Tenaha Jr High football game is scheduled for today, September 22, 2016 at West Sabine at 5:00 pm.

September 23, 2016 the Tigers will play West Sabine at 7:30 pm at Home. Pep Rally will start at 1:30 pm; 5th Quarter at Youth Center

Rams Roll over Red Devils in Homecoming Win

September 18, 2016 – The Joaquin Rams varsity football team enjoyed a 42-0 win over the visiting Huntington Red Devils last Friday.

The Rams went up 6-0, with 3:58 left in the first quarter, when quarterback Tray Wilkerson capped a 50-yard Rams drive with a 5-yard keeper run for a touchdown.  Joseph Tarver extended Joaquin’s lead to 12-0 with a 1-yard scoring run with 4:23 left in the second period. Wilkerson extended the lead to 14-0 with a 2-point conversion run. This would still be the score at the midway break.

The Rams added scores by Kase Yates and Wilkerson in the third quarter, set up by a Reagan Hovey fumble recovery. Joaquin took a 28-0 advantage into the final period.

Wilkerson added another score, early in the fourth period, which gave JHS a 36-0 lead. Tarver added the final score of the contest with a 2-yard touchdown run with just 1:20 left to play.

Joaquin had 383 total yards of offense, 357 rushing and 26 yards passing. The Rams went 2/6 passing and had one interception. Huntington had 116 yards total offense, all rushing. They went 0/1 passing.

The Rams had a 12-6 advantage at converting first-downs.

The Rams are now 2-2 and will travel to Hawkins next Friday, September 23. Kickoff will be at 7:30 p.m. Hawkins is 1-3 and fell to the Timpson Bears by a 35-14 score last Friday.

Joaquin will begin their District 11 2A play on October 7, at home against Alto.

This Week in Shelby County Football

September 14, 2016 – Last week was a time of extremes. Tenaha and Timpson varsity football teams won by landslide scoring advantages, Center and Shelbyville teams lost by multiple scores, and Joaquin lost in the closest game in the county thus far.

The Center Roughriders fell to the Gladewater Bears 56-15 on the road this week. They are now 1-2 and will host the Diboll Lumberjacks for homecoming this Friday at 7:30 p.m. Diboll is 0-3 and fell to Newton last week by a 35-7 score.

Joaquin fell 21-20 to the Lovelady Lions last Friday. The Rams are now 1-2 and will host the Huntington Red Devils this Friday at 7:30 p.m. Huntington is led by Head Coach Brian Gandy who is a former student and assistant coach of Joaquin ISD. The Red Devils are 2-1 and beat West Hardin last week by a 42-22 score.

The Shelbyville Dragons fell 37-19 to the Garrison Bulldogs, in Shelbyville, last Friday. The Dragons’ season record now stands at 1-2. They will face the Arp Tigers Friday at 7:30 p.m. in Arp. The Tigers beat the Alto Yellow Jackets 27-7 last Friday. AHS is 2-1 on the season.

Tenaha moved their record to 3-0, with a 67-0 win over the Dallas Gateway Charter Academy Gators, at home. Tenaha will head to Clarksville High School to face their Tigers at 7:30 p.m. Friday. Clarksville is 0-3 and lost 56-15 to Big Sandy last Friday.

The Timpson Bears evened their record at 1-1 with a lopsided 73-0 win over Cross Roads High School.  The Bears will host the Hawkins Hawks on Friday at 7:30 p.m. The Hawks are 0-3 and lost 13-6 to Como-Pickton last weekend.

September 12, 2016 (More Photos) - The Tenaha Tigers defeated the visiting Dallas Gateway Charter Academy Gators by a 67-0 score, on Friday, by a 67-0 final score.

Onterio Thompson scored Tenahas’ first touchdown at the 10:33 mark of the first period. Abel Rodriguez added his first, of eight, extra-point kicks for the night, giving THS a 7-0 lead.

Thompson added his second score of the game with 8:20 left in the opening period and Tenaha led 14-0. Teammate Trai Gardner scored a receiving touchdown with 2:27 in the first quarter to give THS a 21-0 lead. He added two more scores with 11:27 and 8:12 still left in the second period.

Tenaha sacked Gateways’ Tyler Bussel in the endzone for a 2-point safety with 7:17 left before halftime, and led 37-0. Trenton Soto added his first score of the season, with 4:32 remaining in the first half, and THS led 44-0. Tenaha added one more score before the midway break when Jordan Castillo intercepted a Gator pass, and Thompson pounded in a 2-yard touchdown run which gave Tenaha a lopsided 51-0 lead at the midway intermission.

Gardner and Ladarrius Garrett added second half scores, and Rodriguez kicked a late field goal, to bring the final tally to 67-0 by the game’s end.

The Tigers are now 3-0 and will travel to Clarksville to face their Tigers on Friday, September 16 at 7:30 p.m. Clarksville lost to Big Sandy by a 56-15 score and are 0-3 on the season.

Dragons Outpaced at Home by Bulldogs

September 12, 2016 – The Shelbyville Dragons suffered a tough 37-19 loss, at home last Friday, to the Garrison Bulldogs varsity football team. Shelbyville led 6-0 early when Kyle Tindol capped a 39 yard Dragons scoring drive, with a 2-yard touchdown, with seven minutes remaining in the opening period. The Dragon’s extra point kick attempt was blocked.

Garrison took the lead, with 3:54 left in the second period, when Terrance Dove scored on a 6-yard touchdown run on a sweep play. Connor Moore made good on the Bulldogs extra point kick which gave GHS a narrow 7-6 lead.

The Bulldogs extended their lead to 13-6 when they scored on a pass from Charles Bass to Dove with only 14 seconds remaining in the half.

Ta’Vion Barnes pulled the Dragons to within 13-12 of the Bulldogs when he scored on a keeper from 31 yards out with 2:44 left in the third quarter. The Dragons extra point attempt failed.

Garrison extended their lead to 19-12 when Bass hit Kanye Key with a 10-yard touchdown pass with 44 seconds remaining in the third period. This capped a 61-yard Bulldogs scoring drive. The extra point attempt sailed wide.

Garrison ballooned their lead to 25-12 with a 14-yard Jakobie Hodge touchdown reception with 11:19 left in the contest. This capped a 42 yard GHS scoring drive.

Shelbyville gained good field position when, a great block by Terrell Cartwright, sprung CJ Kirkwood on the ensuing kickoff and SHS started their possession on the Garrison 14 yard line. Barnes scored on a keeper three plays later to pull the Dragons to within 25-19.

Garrison scored seconds later when Hodge returned the Shelbyville kickoff for a touchdown which gave the Bulldogs a 31-19 advantage.

Shelbyville lost a fumble with 5:45 left in the contest and Garrison sustained a long drive which was capped with the game’s final score, a 20-yard bootleg keeper by Bass with just 50 seconds remaining.

Garrison edged Shelbyville on total yardage by gaining 374 to the Dragon’s 269. Shelbyville had 225 yards rushing and 44 passing. The Bulldogs had 132 yards passing and 242 rushing. Garrison had 10 first downs while Shelbyville claimed 12.

The Bulldogs boosted their record to 3-0 and will travel to Alto to face the Yellowjackets at 7:30 p.m. on Friday September 16.

The Dragons are 1-2 and will travel to Arp, and face the Tigers, on Friday, September 16. Kickoff is at 7:30 p.m. Arp is 2-1 and beat Alto last week by a 27-7 scoring margin.

Dragons Offense Burns Trail to 20-6 Win

September 5, 2016 (Photos Album1, Album2)- The Shelbyville Dragons defeated the Hemphill Hornets in their second game of the season with a 20-6 final score.

The game was tied at zero at the end of the first quarter with Hemphill having possession of the ball for approximately two-thirds of the time and the Dragon defense holding strong. With 10:16 on the clock in the second quarter Shelbyville's Terrell Cartwright #9 scored a touchdown giving the Dragons the lead and the only score in the first half of the game.

Terrell Cartwright runs in the first touchdown of the game.With 7:48 remaining in the 3rd quarter, CJ Kirkwood #4 ran the ball into the end zone bringing the Dragons' lead to 13-0 after the extra point attempt failed to reach its mark. Seconds later Hemphill had possession of the ball yet fumbled it on the 19-yard-line and the Dragons were able to gain possession of the ball, putting them once again in scoring position. The Hornet's defense held the offensive line forcing a field goal attempt which was unsuccessful.

An attempted pass to Hemphill's Logan Leone #30 for a touchdown was incomplete near the end of the 3rd quarter. The Hornets tried again with a pass to Tommy Williams #16 who caught the ball and ran it in for a touchdown with 1:13 left in the quarter. The Hornets tried for a two-point conversion but failed to get into the end zone and the 3rd quarter ended with the Dragons in the lead, 13-6.

Shortly after the start of the 4th quarter, the Dragon's Kirkwood scored again with 11:48 on the clock for the last touchdown of the game. The Dragons defeated the Hornets 20-6.

With this week's win Shelbyville has a 1-1 record after losing, 42-28, to Elkhart during opening week. They will go against Garrison this Friday, September 9th in a 7:30 game at home.
