December 5, 2016 - The Panola Fillies found themselves down early, and could not find a way back to seal the deal. The Gators of San Jacinto came would come in and give the Fillies their first conference loss, winning 65-66.
The game would have 4 ties and 8 lead changes throughout the 4 grueling quarters. San Jacinto took the first half with the biggest lead heading into the locker room 32-41.
The Fillies would not give up so easily on their home floor. They reached within 5 as Sophomore Charlynn Perry hit a huge 3 pointer. After a couple of trips to the line by the gators they would go back up 10, but a big steal and 2 point conversion from Freshman Stefany Lourenco would come right at the buzzer of chapter 3, to bring the fillies within 8.
In chapter 4, the Fillies fought back and would tie the game up at 56 with a two point bucket from Freshman Ekaterina Karchevskaya. The lead would go back up 2 as San Jacinto scored a quick drive layup, but the Fillies tied once again at 58. The game would once again be tied at 60, and finally the fillies had a chance to take the lead when Freshman Nailah Blount got to the free throw line and put the fillies up 1 at 61-60. Another lead change would occur to put San Jacinto back up top by 1, but a basket by would put the Fillies up once again at 63-62 with 1:30 left in the game. A few fouls on Panola let the Gators take free shots at the line putting them up 63-64, then up again 63-66. Karchevskaya would hit a nice lay up to bring the Fillies within 1, but it was too late as time expired in the Gators favor.
Free throws would be the game changer for both teams as the Gators would go to the line a total of 14 times to Panola's 7. Gators shot 16 of 26, and the Fillies were 7-14.
With the loss the Fillies are now 2-1 in conference and 8-2 overall. This concludes the Home games of the 2016 year as the Fillies finish off the year before break on the road facing Blinn and Coastal Bend.
December 5, 2016 - Carthage, Texas – The Panola College men’s basketball team lost their first conference game here Saturday afternoon to San Jacinto College, 72-60. After the loss, Panola drops their record to 8-4 and 1-1 in conference play. “I thought we played a tremendous defensive game.” Said head coach Grant McMillan. “We just didn’t get any timely shots to go down, or really a rhythm at all offensively.” He added.
After a back and fourth start, San Jac went on an offensive outburst to give them an 11 point lead midway through the first half. Panola came back to tie the ball game at 29 before San Jac went on an 8-3 run to take the halftime lead, 37-32. San Jacinto maintained their lead most of the second half. With 3:00 minutes remaining, Panola found themselves down 66-60 but failed to convert the rest of the game.
Panola was led by Chan Williams-Bey who scored 14 points off the bench. Devyn Wilson also came off the bench and netted 12 points. Eric McGill and Tope Arikawe scored 11 and 10 points, respectfully. Marlon Taylor chased down eight rebounds. As a team, Panola was ice cold from the field shooting 36 percent from the field.
Panola will finish out the first semester when they head to Beeville to take on Coastal Bend next Saturday, December 10th. Tip-off is set for 4:00 PM.

December 1, 2016 – The Center Lady Roughriders Basketball Team trailed, from the 5 minute mark of the first period, until there was only 40 seconds remaining in the final stanza, but took away a 50-46 win on Tuesday. Center out-scored the Jacksonville Lady Indians 5-0 in the final seconds to gain the win at home.
Jada Hicks scored a bucket which gave Center an early 2-0 lead. JaKayla Weathered gave Center their second lead with a 3-point bomb which gave CHS a 4-3 advantage with 5-minutes left in the opening frame, but the Lady Indians soon after gained the lead, and did not relinquish it until the later stages of the contest. Mekayla Hubbard hit a shot before the buzzer which pulled Center to within 10-14 of the Lady Indians at the end of the first period.
Center trailed by as much as five points in the second stanza but late scores by Hubbard, Hicks, and BreAunna Hightower pulled CHS to within 21-23 of Jacksonville by the halftime intermission.
A Hicks score with 4:05 left in the third period tied the game at 33-33 but JHS gained a bucket from Madison Franklin and took a 35-33 lead into the final stanza.
Center trailed until there was less than one minute remaining in the contest and got a key bucket from Malaisha Cartwright. They saw key free throws made by Cartwright, Nichols, and Hubbard which helped CHS out-pace Jacksonville by 5-0 points to gain the narrow 50-46 win. This was Centers first home win of the season. They stand at 1-3 in early season play.
In Junior Varsity action Center fell behind 6-13 late in the second period and trailed 6-16 at halftime.
By the end of the third frame Center saw the Lady Indians enjoying a 24-10 lead. The Lady Roughriders cut the Lady Indians lead to just 27-24, with only 1 minute left in the contest, but JHS held on for a 31-26 win.

November 26, 2016 - Bryan College Station - The Tenaha Tigers varsity football team has moved to the Regional Championship/ State Quarterfinal round of the UIL football playoffs after defeating the District 12 champion Iola Bulldogs last Friday by a lopsided 44-0 score. This was Tenaha’s third consecutive playoff shut-out.
The Tigers outpaced the Bulldogs with a 323-49 yard rushing advantage, and an impressive 217 to minus 3 yard advantage through the air. Tenaha held Iola to a mere 3 first downs during the contest while gaining 17 first downs themselves.
Tiger CJ Horn hit Jay Lloyd for a 50-yard touchdown pass to get Tenaha a 6-0 advantage early. This proved to be the game’s only score for the first stanza. Trai Gardner took a direct snap, from the Wildcat formation, around the end for a 51-yard touchdown which gave the Tigers a 12-0 lead with 2:41 left in the first half. Teammate Abel Rodriguez tacked on the extra point kick to boost the THS lead to 13-0.
Tiger defender Monterrio Williams scooped, and scored, a Bulldog fumble for a 29-yard THS touchdown with just 58 seconds remaining in the first half of play. The Tigers took a 20-0 lead into the locker room at the midway break.
Gardner added his second touchdown of the night on a 33-yard reception with 5:58 left in the third period. Rodriguez added the extra point and Tenaha enjoyed a 27-0 lead.
A long LaDarrius Garrett run set up a 22-yard Rodriguez field goal with 2:33 left in the third period. This gave THS a 30-0 advantage.
Gardner scored his third touchdown, from three yards out, with 8:26 left in the contest to help Tenaha boost their advantage to 37-0.
Garrett added the final touchdown of the contest when he ran a sweep 27 yards to the endzone with 5:36 remaining. Rodriguez tacked on the extra point to give Tenaha a 44-0 lead which held up for the remainder of the contest.
Tenaha will next face the Bremond Tigers who are also 13-0 this season. Bremond is the winner of District 10. Bremond beat the Maud Cardinals last Friday by a 48-20 margin.
Tenaha has out-scored their playoff opponents by an impressive 202-0 margin.The showdown between the Tenaha and Bremond Tigers is slated for Bryan College Station High School Friday, Dec. 2 at 7 p.m.

November 22, 2016 Fairfield Stadium - The Tenaha Tigers’ varsity football team used seven first-half scores and 466 yards of offense, during the first half, to shock the Meridian Yellowjackets into submission in the Area round of the state football playoffs. Ultimately the Tigers pulled away to a 76-0 win by adding three additional scores during the second half.
Two early scores by Trai Gardner, and first quarter scores by Onterio Thompson, Jay Lloyd and Christian Ashton, helped Tenaha send the message that this would be their night. Tenaha had a 28-0 lead at the end of the first quarter of play. To make things worse for the ‘Jackets, Ashton added an 8-yard score to begin the second period and balloon the Tigers’ lead to 35-0.
A Cody Foshee interception set up an Onterio Thompson touchdown run with 6:13 still left in the first half and THS led 42-0. Gardner added his third score of the night moments later to give Teneha a 49-0 lead with still over five minutes left in the opening half of play.
LaDarrius Garrett scored on a 2-yard run and gave the Tigers a 56-0 lead with 3:49 left in the second period. Thompson added a 60-yard run for the final score of the second period and gave THS a 63-0 lead with just one minute left in the second period.
The second half saw a running clock and the Tigers outscored Meridian by a 13-0 margin while boosting the game’s final score to the 76-0 margin.
Tenaha is now 12-0 on the season and will play Iola for the Regional crown at Merrill Green Stadium in Bryan College Station next Friday, November 25 at 1 p.m.

November 17, 2016 - Four of our county’s varsity football teams made last week’s playoffs; however, three teams were eliminated from post-season competition and lost during the first round of bi-district elimination games.
Center’s season ended Friday when the Roughriders fell to Bridge City by a 35-28 score. The ‘Riders finished in fourth place in District 9 Class 4A-1 with a 6-5 overall mark and a 4-2 conference standing. Bridge City was the winner of District 10. The Cardinals have won six straight games and will face Bay City next Friday.
The Joaquin Rams fell to Lovelady last week by a 16-33 margin. The Rams season ended with them representing District 11 2A-1, as the second place team, with a 7-4 overall standing and a 4-1 conference mark. The Lovelady Lions came in as the third place representative of District 12 and they had an 8-2 overall standing and a 3-2 conference mark.
The Timpson Bears fell to the Evadale Rebels by a 41-52 score. The Bears season ended with them representing District 11 2A-2 as the third place team. Their season record ended at 5-5 and they were 3-2 during conference competition. The Rebels are 10-1 overall and their district mark was 4-1.
The Tenaha Tigers defeated the Sabine Pass Sharks by an impressive 82-0 score. The Tigers are now 11-0 on the season, and they won the title in District 11 2A-2. The Sharks were the fourth place representative of District 12. They ended their season with a 6-5 overall record and a 2-3 conference mark.
THS will play Meridian High School in the Area round of the playoffs, next Friday, at Fairfield Eagle Stadium, at 7:30 p.m. Second place representative Meridian, beat Detroit 68-38 last week and they sport a 7-4 overall record and a 3-2 District 10 mark.
