June 27, 2016 - Saturday, June 25 saw three Center Dixie League teams compete in their second round Dixie Playoff series games.
The Center 11-12 year-old Nationals, coached by Jason Mitchell faced off with the Center Americans, coached by Pugh Hughes. The Nationals came away with a 13-3 win in a 10-run rule shortened, four inning game.
Hunter McSwain gave the Americans an early 1-0 lead in the top of the first inning. The Nationals bounced back and tied the contest at 1-1 when Gabriel Rebollar hit a towering home run over the left-center field fence in the bottom half of the first inning.
The Americans took a 2-1 lead in the second inning when J. McSwain alertly scored on a couple of Nationals errors.
The Nationals made the Americans pay during the bottom of the second frame when they got scores from: 
Rebollar, Makel Johnson, Jordan Turner, Chandler Jones, Garren Dubea, Collin Jones, Caden Soloman, and Blaze Soloman. This gave the National team a 9-2 advantage.
The Nationals ballooned their lead to to 13-2 in the third frame when Johnson, Collin Jones, Jase Bird and Levi Rodgers all crossed home plate for scores.
The Nationals won their next game 9-0 on Sunday, against Diboll, and they secured their advancement to next week's state tournament at Athens.
C. Rawlinson scored for the Americans to pull them within 10 runs during the fourth frame but that would prove to be the final score of the contest.
The Center 9-10 year-old team played Hudson in a much closer contest. Center took a 4-0 lead in the top of the first inning but saw Hudson rally back with six runs in the bottom half of the first frame. Hudson extended their lead to 8-4 by the conclusion of the second inning.
Center tied the game at 8-8 in the the third frame but Hudson got five runs in the top of the fourth inning which gave them a 13-8 advantage.
Center kept fighting and pulled to within 10-13 but Hudson gained three more scores in the fifth, and final inning, which gave them a 16-10 lead.
In the bottom of the fifth frame, Center scored one run to pull themselves to within 11-16. This would prove to be the final tally of the contest.

Thousands of Visitors Expected
June 22, 2016 - The City of Center will be hosting three state youth baseball tournaments beginning June 24 and ending July 21.
According to the City’s Recreation Director, Jason Mitchell, the first tournament will be the Tier II Dixie Boys State Tournament (click for bracket). The tournament will start June 25th and conclude on June 30th. There will be approximately 10-12 teams from as far north as Sulphur Springs and as far south as Cleveland. Also at this time, the City is hosting 2 district tournaments. This will bring another 9 teams to the city. These tournaments will include about 315 players and coaches and bringing around 750 visitors to the city.
The next tournaments will be the Dixie Youth T-ball Div I and II, Coach Pitch Div I and II, and Machine Pitch Div I and II Regional Tournaments. These tournaments will start July 2 and end on July 5th. There will be an opening ceremony to kick off the tournament on July 1.
There will be 38 teams from Anahuac in the southern part of Texas all the way north to Corsicana. This will include 592 players and coaches and should bring around 1500 – 2000 visitors to town.
The last scheduled tournament will be the Dixie Boys and the Dixie Boys Jr. tournaments. These tournaments will start July 16th and end on July 21st. There will be 12-15 teams from all over the State. They will travel from Sulphur Springs in the north to Huntington in the south. This will include approximately 210 players and coaches and should bring 600 – 750 visitors to the city.
“We are excited to have Jason on board to bring more visitors to the City,” said Center Mayor David Chadwick. “These tournaments are a great way for people to experience Center and build our brand as a community that supports youth athletics. This also is a boost to our local economy not just for the hotels but for the restaurants and other retailers.”

June 23, 2016 - The Tenaha Lady Tigers basketball team looked sharp at Tenahas’ Special Events Center, last Tuesday, during summer basketball competition.
The Lady Tigers opened up the day’s play and jumped up 4-0 quickly against the Beckville Lady Bearcats. Beckville scored next but soon found themselves trailing 9-2 after a 2-pointer by Calicia Roland and a 3-point bomb by Lady Tiger Bianca Davison with 13:33 left in the first half of play. Roland hit another bucket later which gave THS a 15-5 lead with four minutes left before halftime.
Tenaha extended their lead to 28-9 by the end of the half with a fast-break wrap-around pass from Brooke McClure to Roland for an easy lay-up and another Davison 3-pointer.
The second half was mostly all Tenaha as they led 34-11 with eight minutes remaining, and won by a 46-13 final score.
The second game of the night featured the Broaddus Elite Sisters against Beckville. The Lady Bearcats won in a game which was close throughout and had 14 lead changes. The final score had BHS ahead 31-29.
Tenaha next faced Broaddus in the final game. Broaddus gained a narrow 3-2 lead early but fell behind 15-5 after an early 11-point burst by Tenaha postman Calicia Roland.
Rebekah Bridges broke loose for two points on a fast break layup with 3:03 left in the first half which put THS ahead 19-8. THS led 21-13 at the halftime break.
The Lady Tigers outscored the Elite Sisters by a 45-3 margin in the second half and took away a 56-16 final score win.
The Lady Tigers as well as other area teams look forward to more summer league competitions held on Tuesdays at the THS SEC at 5 PM.
June 14, 2016 - Center native Jonathan Hennigan has been recruited by the Philadelphia Phillies baseball organization after posting a 5-2 record as a pitcher for Texas State University. He is an Applied Science Major and a transfer student who was a member of a Galveston College team who went 41-19 a year ago.
Hennigan is the son of Kim and Phil Hennigan II. His grandfather Phil Hennigan played professionally for the New York Mets and Cleveland Indians.
Jonathan is a 6’4” , 190 lb., left-handed pitcher with good tools which helped draw attention to his talents. He became a 21st round draft choice when the Phillies chose him on June 11th.

June 13, 2016 - Former Center Roughrider, and 2015 Center High School graduate, Dalton Horton has made the 2016 Louisville Slugger Freshman All-American Baseball Team selection. The team members are selected by Collegiate Baseball Newspaper and players were chosen on June 2nd.
Horton, a left handed pitcher for Texas Christian University, is also a second-team Big 12 selection, Horton recorded an 8-0 record, 2.58 ERA and 27 strikeouts during the regular season.
In 2015 Horton was a pitcher and first baseman who led Center High to the Semifinal round of the UIL playoffs before the Roughriders were eliminated by Hargrave High School.
June 8, 2016 - The Joaquin Lady Rams and Tenaha Lady Tigers were among four varsity basketball teams which faced off for summer league round-robin play last Tuesday, June 7th.
The first game saw Shelby County rivals, the Lady Rams and Tigers, face off in Tenaha's Special Events to kick off action for the day. Tenaha gained an early lead and took a 16-12 lead into the second half.
The Lady Rams stormed back to tie things up at 24-24 midway through the final period. A Dayza Lane putback shot gave Joaquin their biggest lead at 28-25 with 5 minutes remaining.
A 2-pointer, and a 3-point bomb, by Bianca Davison, regained the lead for Tenaha at 32-28, with only seconds remaining. Calicia and Arlicia Roland teamed up for a cross-court, back-door pass with 20 second left in the game to give THS a 34-28 final advantage.
Tenaha next beat the Mount Enterprise Lady Wildcats by a 42-8 margin. Joaquin defeated Broaddus by a 33-point margin. Tenaha beat Broaddus in the final matchup by a 49-point margin, with a 59-10 score.
These teams are slated to meet up again next Tuesday at 5 PM at Tenaha's SEC.
June 3, 2016 - Four Center Softball All Star teams competed in district tournaments.
The Center 8U and the 10U both traveled to Lufkin, Texas and the 10U team won 3rd place in their division at district and received trophies.
The Center12U and 14U All Stars teams both played in district tournaments in Nacogdoches. The Center 14U girls placed 2nd and received a team trophy and game rings. Congratulations!

June 2, 2016 - The 2016 UIL Baseball and Softball State Championships are still in full swing. Our local teams however, have been eliminated.
The Center Roughriders entered the playoffs as a District 19 4A representative but where taken out of the tourney by the Hudson Hornets, in two games, at the bi-district level. Hudson later fell to Robinson High School at the Regional Quarterfinals. Robinson is still alive and in the Regional Finals which begin on June 4.
The Joaquin Lady Rams are the Shelby County team which went the farthest this season. The Lady Rams softball team went to the Regional Semifinal round before falling to the Harleton Lady Wildcats in two games, by 3-2 and 6-0 scores. Harleton later beat the Beckville Lady Bearcats, and they have now moved on to face Windthorst High School in the State Level Playoffs starting this weekend.
The Joaquin Baseball team wasn't far behind as they were narrowly eliminated at the Regional Quarterfinal round of the playoffs by the Lovelady Lions in three games. Lovelady later fell to Maud who will face Joaquin's District 23 rival, the Beckville Bearcats at the Regional Finals starting June 4.
The Shelbyville Lady Dragons made this year's playoffs and fell to the Colmesneil Lady Bulldogs at the Bi-District level in two games. Colmesneil fell to the Slocum Lady Mustangs in the Area round of competition.
The Shelbyville Dragons Baseball team fell early as well. They fell to the West Sabine Tigers in the Bi-District round. The Tigers fell to Centerville in the next round of play.

May 30, 2016 - Last Saturday the 25th Annual Dwight Preston Football Camp staff was spotted at Tenaha Tiger Stadium working hard at teaching young football hopefuls both basic and advanced football skills.
Over a dozen instructors shared their knowledge and experiences with the campsters who ranged in age from 6-14 years of age. Among the instructors and camp staff were: Dwight Preston, Ronald Preston, A’mie Preston, Baron Horton, Colton Thompson, Sakedron Horn, Brandon Horton, Alicia Davis from I-Fit Aerobics, Danburt Collum, Kenneth Cotton, Kendall Hill, and Brady Smith.
By all accounts the staff and kids were having fun and getting a lot of exercise and fellowship out of the event.
