July 12, 2016 - This team has played a total of 28 games together and has a 28-0 record. They went undefeated in District play in Center, TX on June 26th.  

This past weekend they swept the State Tournament in Athens, TX beating Tyler Co in the Championship game 16-5 to become the 2016 Texas Majors State Champs.  

Center ended the State Tournament racking up a total of 64 runs scored and giving up only 16 runs, with 11 home-runs and 3 Grand Slams.  

They will be headed to Laurel, MS on August 6th to play in the Dixie Youth World Series representing the state of Texas.

July 8, 2016 - Album - Antonio Chavez and Madison Brown were the overall winners of the 5th Annual What-A-Melon 5K Run/Walk Saturday morning, July 9, 2016.

Chavez had a finishing time of 18:45 and Brown's time was 24:18. Wiggins Farms donated watermelons at the event to help keep participants cool and handed out slices after participants crossed the finish line.

Participants lined up on the Center square early in the morning to begin the race. Center Police Officers traveled with the runners at the beginning and end of the line of runners to provide safety as they traveled the route. Following the race awards were presented by 2016 National Watermelon Queen Carla Lynn Penney, of Vienna, Georgia.

Funds raised from the event will go to the Fannie Brown Booth Memorial Library.

July 5, 2016 - The Shelbyville Dragon T-Ball team won the Dixie Youth Baseball Division II South Regional Tournament (Bracket) in the Championship game against West Rusk with a final score of 26-21 in overtime in the 6th inning.

Shelbyville was undefeated during season and the tournament. In their final game against West Rusk the teams were tied 19-19 at the end of  the 5th inning forcing them to go into overtime for an intense contest. The dragons scored the max of 7 runs in the top of the 6th inning bringing them to 26 on the board with the West Rusk team being last at bat. West Rusk scored two runs before Shelbyville ended the game getting the third and final out and a final score of 26-21.

Shelbyville will travel to Longview July 15th and 16th in a North versus South Regional matchup against Hooks. Best two out of three wins!

July 4, 2016 - The Dixie Youth Baseball South Regional Baseball Tournament Championship games are today, July 4, 2016. 

  • T-Ball Division I (Bracket) Championship game is between Bullard and Hudson at 5:30pm. T-Ball Division II (BracketChampionship game is between Shelbyville and West Rusk at 5pm. Congratulations to Tri-Cities for receiving the Sportsmanship award.
  • Machine Pitch Division I (Bracket) game is between Kilgore Red and Panola National at 4:30pm. Machine Pitch Division II (Bracket) game is between Overton and Tatum and starts at 3:00pm. Congratulations to Huntington for receiving the Sportsmanship award.

July 4, 2016 - The 1st Annual Shelbyville Dragon Football Camp was a success and well attended with 40 plus 6th graders through 9th graders taking to Dragon Stadium for a jump start on the 2016-2017 football season.

Camp attendees reported to the Dragon Weight Room at 5:30pm with the goal of improving their skills during the four days of camp and each camper received a Shelbyville Football t-shirt.

June 30, 2016 - The City of Center invite the public to attend the opening ceremonies of the Texas Youth Regional Tournaments beginning at 7:00 p.m. on Friday, July 1 at the Center Youth Baseball Complex located on Roughrider Dr. Activities for the evening events include games, food and fireworks.

June 30, 2016 - Hiram Harrison, a Center ISD Basketball Coach, recently assisted the new head coach at SFA, Kyle Keller, with the Kyle Keller Basketball Camp.

Harrison is an SFA hall of fame athlete and during the basketball camp he was caught on video demonstrating those hall of fame athletic skills. The video posted by Adriene Hughes Stanaland has received over 2,000 views since it was posted yesterday, Wednesday, June 29th. Camp participants can be heard chanting 'ice cream shot' as Coach Harrison releases and sinks a half court shot. The shot appeared to be 'nothing but net!'

June 27, 2016 - Saturday, June 25 saw three Center Dixie League teams compete in their second round Dixie Playoff series games.

The Center 11-12 year-old Nationals, coached by Jason Mitchell faced off with the Center Americans, coached by Pugh Hughes. The Nationals came away with a 13-3 win in a 10-run rule shortened, four inning game.

Hunter McSwain gave the Americans an early 1-0 lead in the top of the first inning. The Nationals bounced back and tied the contest at 1-1 when Gabriel Rebollar hit a towering home run over the left-center field fence in the bottom half of the first inning.

The Americans  took a 2-1 lead in the second inning when J. McSwain alertly scored on a couple of Nationals errors.

The Nationals made the Americans pay during the bottom of the second frame when they got scores from: Rebollar, Makel Johnson, Jordan Turner, Chandler Jones, Garren Dubea, Collin Jones, Caden Soloman, and Blaze Soloman. This gave the National team a 9-2 advantage.

The Nationals ballooned their lead to to 13-2 in the third frame when Johnson, Collin Jones, Jase Bird and Levi Rodgers all crossed home plate for scores.
The Nationals won their next game 9-0 on Sunday, against Diboll, and they secured their advancement to next week's state tournament at Athens.

C. Rawlinson scored for the Americans to pull them within 10 runs during the fourth frame but that would prove to be the final score of the contest.

The Center 9-10 year-old team played Hudson in a much closer contest. Center took a 4-0 lead in the top of the first inning but saw Hudson rally back with six runs in the bottom half of the first frame. Hudson extended their lead to 8-4 by the conclusion of the second inning.

Center tied the game at 8-8 in the the third frame but Hudson got five runs in the top of the fourth inning which gave them a 13-8 advantage.

Center kept fighting and pulled to within 10-13 but Hudson gained three more scores in the fifth, and final inning, which gave them a 16-10 lead.

In the bottom of the fifth frame, Center scored one run to pull themselves to within 11-16. This would prove to be the final tally of the contest.

Thousands of Visitors Expected

June 22, 2016 - The City of Center will be hosting three state youth baseball tournaments beginning June 24 and ending July 21.

According to the City’s Recreation Director, Jason Mitchell, the first tournament will be the Tier II Dixie Boys State Tournament (click for bracket). The tournament will start June 25th and conclude on June 30th. There will be approximately 10-12 teams from as far north as Sulphur Springs and as far south as Cleveland. Also at this time, the City is hosting 2 district tournaments. This will bring another 9 teams to the city. These tournaments will include about 315 players and coaches and bringing around 750 visitors to the city.

The next tournaments will be the Dixie Youth T-ball Div I and II, Coach Pitch Div I and II, and Machine Pitch Div I and II Regional Tournaments. These tournaments will start July 2 and end on July 5th. There will be an opening ceremony to kick off the tournament on July 1.

There will be 38 teams from Anahuac in the southern part of Texas all the way north to Corsicana. This will include 592 players and coaches and should bring around 1500 – 2000 visitors to town.

The last scheduled tournament will be the Dixie Boys and the Dixie Boys Jr. tournaments. These tournaments will start July 16th and end on July 21st. There will be 12-15 teams from all over the State. They will travel from Sulphur Springs in the north to Huntington in the south. This will include approximately 210 players and coaches and should bring 600 – 750 visitors to the city.

“We are excited to have Jason on board to bring more visitors to the City,” said Center Mayor David Chadwick. “These tournaments are a great way for people to experience Center and build our brand as a community that supports youth athletics. This also is a boost to our local economy not just for the hotels but for the restaurants and other retailers.”
