April 3, 2016 - On Friday April 1, the Tenaha Tigers won their third straight District 23 2A game by beating the Joaquin Rams by a 13-8 score. This happened on a day that their new ballpark was dedicated to the memory of Cole DePriest, the son of Head Tigers Baseball Coach David DePriest. Cole passed away a year ago from injuries sustained from a horse riding accident.

A touching ceremony dedicating the park to DePriests' memory included his sister, Abi DePriest, throwing out the first pitch. After the Tigers upset win, each Tenaha ballplayer copied Cole's signature slide in to home plate in memory of the kid who was a facet in the community and attended most sporting events.

Joaquin started off on top and led 1-0 at the end of the first inning after a Kase Yates RBI single scored Brock Lawson. Tigers pitcher Trevin Stewart was able to strike out the next two Rams batters to minimize the Rams offensive.

Joaquin added three runs in the second inning, and two more in the top of the fourth inning, to take a 7-0 lead. In the bottom of the fourth inning, Tenaha exploded for ten runs of their own to take a 10-7 lead. The Tigers added three more scores in the bottom of the fifth inning and took a 13-7 lead.

Ram, Elezar Huera, scored the final run of the contest in the top of the sixth frame and brought JHS to within 8-13 of Tenaha but Joaquin's attempt at a rally was thwarted by two Tyler Muckelroy strike outs and a nice play on a ground ball by Stewart in the final inning.

Tenaha has moved out of the conference basement by winning their last three contests after starting league play at 0-4.

Joaquin is 5-2 and holds on to second place after a 2-1 Shelbyville loss to Gary.

The two teams will start the second round of district play on Tuesday, April 5, Joaquin heads to Mount Enterprise for a 6:30 pm game with the Wildcats. Tenaha hosts the Gary Bobcats at 4:30 pm.

Coach David DePriest stated, "We are so proud of the kids for staying in the game and fighting back when we were behind. Coach (Wade) Lawson always brings a good team to play and we are fortunate to have been able to keep this game within reach. I'm proud of our players and this was a special day."

Rams Defeat Dragons, Move Into Second Place

April 1, 2016 - The hometown Joaquin Rams varsity baseball team held on to shut out the Shelbyville Dragons by a 3-0 score last Tuesday. Rams pitcher Brock Lawson threw a complete game in the win which moved his team to 5-1 in District 23 2A play and gave JHS sole possession of second place in the conference. The Rams trail the undefeated Beckville Bearcats who boast a spotless 6-0 standing. Shelbyville falls to 4-2 and they are still in the playoff race and in third place.

The two teams face their final opponents of the first round of district competition with Joaquin traveling to Tenaha, on Friday, April 1 for a 4:30 pm game with the 2-4 Tigers. The Dragons head to Beckville, on April 8, to face the current conference leaders at 6 p.m., according to Maxpreps.

Tuesdays game saw the Rams and Dragons both scoreless for the first 4 1/2 innings. In the bottom of the fourth inning Kase Yates was able to reach base via a walk. He later scored on a squeeze-play on a Trey Wilkerson sacrifice bunt. The Rams took a 1-0 lead into the fifth inning.

RBI singles by Brock Lawson and Kase Yates, in the bottom of the fifth frame, allowed JHS scores from Cole Powdrill and Lawson to give the Rams what would eventually prove to be the final 3-0 margin of victory.

Center JV Baseball Game Schedule Update

March 29, 2016 - Center JV Baseball will host Carthage JV on Saturday, April 2 at 11:00 am. This is a make up game for the March 18th cancellation.

Martial Arts Students Move Up a Rank

March 29, 2016 - The following students at Self Defense America, attended the exam to move up a rank. They all passed their exam with acceptable knowledge of all requirements.

March 29, 2016 (Album1, Album2, Album3) - March 23, 2016, Shelbyville ISD hosted the 1st Annual Shelbyville Dragons Special Olympics Track and Field Meet. There were athletes from: Timpson, Joaquin, Center, Sabine County, and Shelbyville.All Special Olympians

All of the athletes competed in a walking/running event and a field event.

Three teams also competed in the 4X100 Relay with Shelbyville teams coming in 1st and 2nd, and Sabine County came in 3rd. The gold medal Relay time was 1:12:94, Silver medal winners had a time of 1:14:15, and the Bronze winners had a time of 1:14:83.

Timpson Special Olympians and coaches Other running events included: 10 M Assisted Walk, 50 M Assisted Walk, 400 M Walk, Girls 50 M Dash, Boys 50 M Dash, and the Boys 100 M Dash. Field events included: Girls Tennis Ball Throw, Boys Tennis Ball Throw, Girls Softball Throw, Boys Softball Throw, and the Boys Mini Javelin Throw.

All athletes participating were from age 8 to high school. Timpson brought 2 athletes and won 3 gold medals, and one silver medal. Joaquin Brought 5 athletes and won 4 gold medals, 5 silver medals, and 1 bronze medal. Center brought 5 athletes and won 4 gold medals, 2 silver medals, and 3 bronze medals. Sabine County brought 7 athletes and won 8 gold medals, 4 silver medals, and 4 bronze medals. The home team Shelbyville Dragons had 13 athletes and they won 10 gold medals, 13 silver medals, and 3 bronze medals.

Joaquin Special Olympians, coaches and volunteers

All athletes, coaches and volunteers enjoyed hamburgers and hotdogs which were cooked by Farmers State Bank and Shelbyville Lions Club, and sacked up by countless volunteers.

It was a great day for all that participated. A huge thank you to the cookers, countless volunteers, Shelbyville High School athletes, sponsors, and all the schools who participated and helped make this event happen. We look forward to making this an annual event which continues to grow from year to year.

Center Roughrider's Soccer Area Playoffs

March 28, 2016 - The Center Roughrider Soccer team will compete against Hardin Jefferson on Friday, April 1, 2016 at 7pm in the Area Round of Playoffs.

The teams will play at Crockett High School, Monte Jack Driskell Stadium, located at 1600 SW Loop 304, Crockett, Texas 75835. For directions, click here.

Tenaha Takes First District Win Over Martinsville

March 25, 2016 - The Tenaha Tigers varsity baseball team gained their first District 23-2A win this season on Good Friday with a decisive 14-1 win over the winless Martinsville Pirates at Martinsville's Pirates Ballpark.

Tenaha took an early 3-0 lead with scores from Tyler Muckelroy, Trevin Stewart and Giles in the top of the first inning. James scored the Pirates only run in the bottom of the first inning after reaching base on an error and later scoring on a passes ball.

The Tigers added on four runs in the top of the second frame and Alejandro Flores struck out the first three Pirates he faced in the bottom of the second inning, helping Tenaha take a 7-1 lead into the third stanza.

Flores hit a solo home run over the left field fence with two outs in the top of the third inning to help Tenaha gain six runs in the third inning. The Tigers added one in the fourth to extend their lead to 14-1 and enforce the 10-run-rule after the MHS squad failed to score in the bottom of the fifth inning.

The Tigers' Flores and Muckelroy teamed up for five strikeouts each. Martinsvilles' Hooper pitched all five innings and had eight strikeouts.

Roughrider Invitational Golf Tournament at Center Country Club

March 25, 2016 - On Monday, February 22 the Center Roughriders Varsity Golf team hosted Rusk, Huntington and Garrison High Schools in the Roughrider Invitational Golf Tournament at Center Country Club.

The Roughriders performed well and won the tourney by a large margin as their nearest competition trailed by 68 strokes. Center's five-man team totaled 336 strokes, the second place Rusk Eagles totaled 414, the Huntington Red Devils came in third place with 428 strokes and the Garrison Bulldogs totaled 458 strokes.

The top six individual golfers were: Beau Byrnes, Center, with 75 strokes; Austin Craig, Center, 77; Zack Ritter, Center 90; Rex Kirkley, Center 94 , Blane Agnew, Center, 98 ; Colton Peters, Rusk, had 99 strokes.

The Roughriders, and Lady Roughriders, will be playing their District round at Longview's Wood Hollow Golf Course on March 28 and April 4.

March 24, 2016 - The Joaquin HS Softball game scheduled for today in Gary has been moved to a home game. It will be played in Joaquin today at 5pm.
