David's Daily Devotion for July 25

July 25, 2022 - Good Morning! It’s Monday, July 25.

I love puzzles. All kinds of puzzles. But, most of all, I love crossword puzzles. The gold standard is the New York Times Crossword and I religiously complete it every day.

There are puzzles in the Bible - mysteries - questions that have no answers.

*Where was the Garden of Eden located?
*Where did Cain’s wife come from?
*What were the Behemoth and the Leviathan mentioned in the Book of Job?
*What year was Jesus born?
*What happened to Jesus between the ages of 12 and 30?

David’s Daily Devotion for July 23

July 23, 2022 - Good Morning! It's Saturday, July 23.

Something happened at my house yesterday that hasn't happened in a long while. It rained! A long, slow, soaking rain. It's been such a hot, dry summer - we really needed it. I hope you got some at your house too. Thanks be to God for the good rain.

God often uses rain as a metaphor, as a symbol, in His Word. Sometimes it symbolizes His blessing. Deuteronomy 32:2. Let my teaching fall like rain and my words descend like dew, like showers on new grass, like abundant rain on tender plants.

David's Daily Devotion for July 22

July 22, 2022 - Good Morning! It’s Friday, July 22.

Today I’m on my way to Houston to sing at a memorial service. A service for one of my best friends. A service for one of the finest pianists I’ve ever known.

Richard and I shared a love for music when we were growing up together in my home church. And we both loved to play piano. But I was always aware (painfully) that he could play rings around me! God began to call me to lead others in worship, and when I started in my first church staff position, Richard was my accompanist.

David's Daily Devotion for July 21

July 21, 2022 - Good Morning! It’s Thursday, July 21.

Change. When I was a boy that meant money in my pocket. My grandfather called it "silver." I loved to hear the jingle-jangle sound when I walked - made me feel rich! And there were lots of things that a pocketful of change could buy.

But all that has changed. I don't carry coins around anymore. I don't really use cash that much - so there's not any "change" coming back. Today, the word has a different meaning, and unlike the definition from our childhood, it's not something that we welcome or treasure.

David's Daily Devotion for July 20

July 20, 2022 - Good Morning! It's Wednesday, July 20.

Church jokes aren't exactly the highest form of humor - maybe just a rung or two above Dad jokes. But here's some "funnies" for you this morning - 'cause sometimes you just gotta laugh!

If you took all the people in the world who fall asleep in church, and laid them end to end - they'd all be a lot more comfortable.

Why do movie makers record laser gun sounds in churches? Because they go "pew, pew, pew!"

Where was Solomon's temple located? On the side of his head.

David's Daily Devotion for July 19

July 19, 2022 - Good Morning! It’s Tuesday, July 19.

In 1854, at the tender age of 19, Charles Spurgeon became the pastor of Metropolitan Tabernacle, the largest church in London. A mesmerizing orator, he preached over 3,600 sermons over the next 38 years. And he became, in many people's estimation, the greatest pulpiteer of modern times.

David’s Daily Devotion for July 18

July 18, 2022 - Good Morning! It’s Monday, July 18.

Have you ever taken a wrong turn in your life? Found yourself going in the wrong direction? Douglas Corrigan became famous for doing just that. He was born in Galveston, Texas in 1907 and was always fascinated by one thing - airplanes. He became a pilot and flight mechanic, and was part of the team that prepared “The Spirit of St. Louis,” the plane that Charles Lindbergh piloted across the Atlantic in his historic flight.

David’s Daily Devotion for July 16

July 16, 2022 - It’s Saturday, July 16.

Tomorrow morning, we’ll be singing the song “Come, Now is the Time to Worship” at First Baptist Center. It’s a song born in a moment of change, birthed in a time of crisis. A song with a lesson for us this morning.

Brian Doerksen is a Canadian worship leader. In the early 1990’s he was inspired to write a Christian musical, and used a great deal of his own money to produce it. The musical was a failure. Discouraged, and needing a job to support his young family, he took a new position in England, a new start.

David’s Daily Devotion for July 15

July 15, 2022 - Good Morning! It's Friday, July 15.

On July 15, 1798, a great mystery was solved.  Napoleon's army had invaded Egypt and a soldier stumbled upon an engraved stone in the city of Rosetta.  This "Rosetta Stone" proved to be the key that would unlock the mystery of the ancient Egyptian language, a language first developed 4000 years before Bethlehem.
